Storybird Instructions for Patrons Getting Added to a Storybird Class 1) Visit your local library, make sure you have your library card with you 2) The librarian will ask you for your Storybird username and your library card number: i) If you already have an account the librarian will give you a Class Access Code, this allows you to join the class. Simply log into story bird, click on the You link (located at the top of the screen) and select Class. Enter the Class Access Code in the textbox located in the Join Class section. Finish by pressing Join Class ii) If you do not have a Storybird account the librarian will make one for you. They will also provide you with your temporary password that you will change after your first login Searching for Artwork and Creating a Story 1) Double click on Mozilla Firefox 2) Go to Storybird (type in: www.storybird.com) 3) Click on Sign In then enter in your login information 4) Select Write (located at the top of the page) 1

5) Select the artwork you would like to use in your story, there are a few different ways to do this: i) search for specific terms using the Search Bar (located towards the bottom left side of the screen) ii) search using the All Artwork and Recently Added links (located on the left side of the screen) iii) search using the Artwork Tags link (located on the left side of the screen) 5) ii 5) iii 5) i 6) Click on the image you wish to view 7) Below the image you will see other artwork from that artist. Click View All (next to the images) to see the entire collection 8) Select Use This Art when you have found the artwork or image you would like to use 2

9) Select the story format: Picture Book (multipage). The Longform Book (multichapter) and Poem (single page) options are not yet available for school accounts. The next page is where you will create your story 8 7 7 10) Creating a Storybook: The center of the screen displays the pages of your story when you have selected the storybook format, on either side there are different pieces of artwork that can be added to the story. To place a piece of art into your story click and drag the picture to the page (you can place the art in 5 areas on the page, the system highlights the area of the page where the picture will appear) 11) The textbox is outlined with a dotted box, to begin writing click on the doted box and begin typing. There are also a few useful buttons on this page: 3

i) To add a page to your story click the + sign located at the bottom right hand corner of the page, to delete a page click the sign located at the bottom left hand corner ii) The two arrow keys allow users to switch from page to page iii) To save your progress, click the Save button located at the bottom right hand corner. This will save your work and keep you on that page iv) The Menu button will bring up the options to: Invite a Collaborator, Publish Your Story, or Save and Close. Inviting a collaborator allows you to create a story with someone else, publishing your story makes it into a polished, printable copy, and lastly, save and close will save your progress and bring you to Your Stuff. Note that you will need to create a cover page and title before you are allowed to publish your story 10 11) i 11) i 11) iv 11) iii 11) ii Publishing Your Story 1) Click Publish 2) Enter in the appropriate details (i.e., title, summary, category, tag, audience, branch for storybooks and tags/privacy for poems) and click publish (storybook format) or continue (poetry format) 4

3) Your story/poem will now appear on the Your Stuff page (found under the You tab) Viewing Your Story 1) Click You, this is located at the top of your screen 2) Select Your Stuff (found under the You tab) 3) All of your published and unpublished work will appear on this page (Note: stories that were created by other branch staff will appear here as well) Deleting Your Story 1) Click You, (located at the top of your screen) 2) Select Your Stuff (under the You tab) 3) Click the Actions icon located next to the title of the story/poem you wish to delete 4) Select Delete Story 5

Editing Your Story after Publication 1) Click You (located at the top of your screen) 2) Select Your Stuff (under the You tab) 3) Click the Actions icon located next to the title of the story/poem you wish to edit 4) Select Edit Story (Edit Details allows you to change the specifics of your story, for example the audience it is meant for) actions Printing Your Story 1) Ask the librarian at your local branch for more information on how you can have your stories printed in colour! Returning to Your Dashboard 1) Click the Storybird logo located at the top of your screen (blue circle with a white bird in the centre) 6
