Panini, Pretzels, Pernod & Paint Crossing Continents with henderson cisz
Henderson Cisz set off from Brazil to see the world in his twenties, and 30 years later, he is still pursuing his ambition, travelling extensively to sketch, photograph and paint his ever growing list of favourite cities.
LONDON Two worlds collide in London, where ancient royal palaces and centuries old bridges stand surrounded by the glass and chrome of cutting edge architectural design. Walking the city streets and stopping to sketch a row of imposing buildings, or searching for an interesting new angle on a familiar landmark you notice that there is constantly something new this is a city that changes like the wind.

venice One particular aspect of Venice that I love is that alongside such architectural marvels as St Mark s or the Doge s Palace, there is that other side to the city; the faded splendour of damaged facades and shabby palazzi that are somehow even more beautiful than the famous highlights. And when I get tired of roaming the cobbled passage ways with my easel, there is always a dry martini waiting in Harry s Bar

new york There is so much to celebrate in New York, including the most recognisable skyline on the planet, and it has become one of my favourite subjects. When I am painting in Times Square or looking across at the Brooklyn Bridge I start to get that strange sensation that I m standing in the middle of a major film set, but then the New Yorkers hurrying past at breakneck speed remind me that in fact to them, it s just their daily reality.

amsterdam No wonder that Amsterdam is often referred to as the Venice of the North. It is just as beautiful and fascinating as its southern sister, but in a very different way. The 17th century waterways lined with merchants houses built in the city s golden age, the fabulous cultural and artistic heritage, the cyclists. all the characteristics that give it that uniquely welcoming atmosphere and of course, make it a tremendously enjoyable place to paint.

paris Paris was a revelation to me when I first visited it in the late 1980s. It was my introduction to the ideal European city, just a treasure trove of beauty and style. After London it seemed tiny, but those few square miles certainly packed a punch - each one overflowing with dazzling white buildings and imposing monuments, and everywhere you looked pavement cafes buzzing with activity even on the coldest days.

the quintessential artist of urban style
rome The Eternal City is almost overwhelming for an artist as everywhere you look there is so much beauty; ancient buildings, Bernini sculpture, an inconspicuous church casually revealing a couple of breathtaking Caravaggios inspiration on every corner. Walk for five minutes in any direction and there will be something to paint that the whole world will recognise the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and perhaps most striking of all, St Peter s.

sydney Painting here is dramatically different from anywhere else; although some of the American cities I visit are also modern, they don t feel young in the way that Sydney does. It has a uniquely youthful vibrancy that shows in its public art and architecture, its cuisine and its attitudes, and you can t help but be affected by it. I can t wait to go back!

las vegas Las Vegas is a manmade metropolis where tourists go to experience something completely removed from day to day life. I found myself enjoying the high octane atmosphere on the Strip and Fremont Street, and the sheer pace, the volume, the crowds, the neon it all combined to create something unique and therefore, fascinating. Vegas certainly has character, and I loved the challenge of capturing something of its strangely alluring style.

san francisco San Francisco is an interesting place for many reasons. It is famously small, only seven miles by seven miles, which means you can actually see a large number of the most exciting and interesting buildings and areas on a well planned walk. My first day in the city was fantastic as I got a real sense of the place - steep hills, quaint neighbourhoods, cable cars offering spectacular views, before I began to think about painting.

Henderson Cisz is quite simply the quintessential artist of urban style. Like the cities he paints, his artworks represent a meeting place between the traditional and the contemporary, for while they are classic examples of a long established genre, their interpretation and execution places them firmly in the 21st century. Exhibiting his work all over the world, Henderson enjoys a large following of individual and corporate collectors and has received an impressive range of accolades and awards including the John Solomon Trophy and the Fine Art Trade Guild Artist of the Year.
