INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLEANING YOUR EAR MOULD. The ear mould of your hearing aid should be cleaned weekly. 1. Detach the ear mould from the hearing aid, as shown in diagram A, pull the tubing away from the elbow/ which is on the hearing aid. DO NOT PULL THE TUBING OUT OF THE MOULD. Tubing Elbow / Hook Pull hook 2. Wash the mould in warm soapy Diagram A water. Any kind of gentle soap you would use on your body would be suitable. A nail brush, pin or cleaning wire may be used to help remove wax from the tubing and vent hole. 3. Rinse the ear mould in clean water, shake the excess water out and leave in a warm dry place over night. DO NOT PLACE ON A RADIATOR as the mould will melt. Also do not blow through the tube as your breath has moisture in which will stay in the tubing. 4. The ear mould should be re-attached to the hearing aid with the curve of the mould matching the curve of the aid (see diagram below) Right Side Left Side PLEASE NOTE: The hearing aid itself should never come in contact with water. To clean it you should use a baby wipe and a dry cloth. Make sure the battery drawer is closed.

HOW TO RETUBE YOUR EAR MOULD Your Ear mould should be retubed every 4 6 months. 1. Pull the old tubing out of the mould and keep it. Taper the last inch of the new tubing. 2. Thread the tapered end through from the outside of the mould. 3. Pull the tubing through the mould until the tapered end has passed right through the mould. The tubing should now be at a right angle, with the tubing flat against the outside of the mould. 4. Cut off the tapered end as close to the mould as possible. 5. To adjust the tubing to the right length, place the mould in your ear and the hearing aid over the top of your ear. Ask somebody to make a mark where the tubing and end of the hook / elbow meet. Cut the tubing at this point. Another method is to hold the old piece of tubing against the new piece of tubing and cut it to the same length. 6. Squeeze the top of the tubing and wiggle it on over the end of the elbow / hook.

HOW TO CLEAN OPEN FIT TUBES. 1. One type of tubing unscrews and the other needs a quarter turn and then can be pulled off. Ask the Audiologist which type you have. 2. Give the end, which is a dark grey dome, a clean with a wipe or a tissue. Be very gentle to make sure you do not loosen or remove the dome. 3. Use the cleaning wire as pictured in the diagrams below. Push the cleaning wire through the top. Pull wire completely through the dome and remove. 4. Attach the tube back by pushing or screwing back onto the hearing aid. Ask the Audiologist which type you have.

HOW TO INSERT AND REMOVE OPEN FIT HEARING AIDS. 1. Make sure the battery drawer is open, which means the hearing aid is turned off. Place the hearing aid over the top of your ear. 2. With your index finger following the tubing down from the hearing aid to where the tip is. Then push the tip down into ear canal as far as you can / as far as it is comfortable. 3. Curl the retainer wire into the bowl of the ear and close the battery drawer. You have now completed insertion 4.This is how it should look from the front; the tubing should be flush to the ear. We recommend you practice this as much as you can, prefferably in front of a mirror. To remove: Hold the tubing closest to the entrance of the ear canal and pull / wiggle out. Do not remove by pulling the hearing aid. Once removed, give them a clean and disconnect the battery drawer.

HOW TO INSERT AND REMOVE AN EAR MOULD. Hold the mould in between your thumb and index finger as shown in the picture. The battery drawer can be open or closed, dependant on if you find it easier switching it on when it is not behind your ear. Lift your elbow up and come from the back of the ear, positioning the large meatus part down into your ear canal. Meatus Make sure the top curve of the mould is underneath this fold of skin.

You may need to pull your ear upwards or your ear lobe downwards to help manoeuvre the mould in so it is secure. This is how the mould should look when it is properly inserted into the ear. Place the hearing aid over the back of your ear. If the battery drawer was open then now close it to turn the hearing aid on.

To remove ear mould, pull ear back slightly and slot thumb or finger under the mould. Flick the mould out. Once out disconnect the battery by opening the battery drawer. Do not pull the mould out by the tube or hearing aid. This risks causing damage to the tubing, hook or even removing the tubing from the mould itself. What an incorrectly inserted ear mould looks like: Here the mould is sitting Here the mould has been Here the ear needed to in front of the fold of skin. twisted on insertion, be pulled upwards so The top of the ear mould causing the mould not that the mould sits needs to be slipped insert fully. tightly in the ear. behind the fold of skin. All these poor insertions will cause sound to leak which means there will be feedback. This is when the hearing aid screeches.
