THE HINDU NEWSPAPER DAILY Hindu Current Affairs Analysis 11th-Jan, 2018 TOPICS COVERED TWO-TIER SHIELD FOR AADHAAR DATA {GOVERNANCE} 4 PSLV ALL SET TO FERRY 31 SATELLITES ON JANUARY 12 {SCIENCE & TECH.}... 1 HOW WILL YOU ISSUE AADHAAR FOR THE HOMELESS, ASKS SUPREME COURT {GOVERNANCE}... 5 IN FDI PUSH, CENTRE ALLOWS 49% FOREIGN OWNERSHIP IN AI {ECONOMY}... 2 CHINA TO FUND BASE IN AFGHANISTAN {INTERNATIONAL}... 6 CENTRE OPENS ARMS TO SINGLE BRAND RETAIL FDI {ECONOMY}... 3 THE HINDU NEWSPAPER DAILY Hindu Current Affairs Analysis PSLV all set to ferry 31 satellites on January 12 {Science & Tech.} The world s favourite and reliable commercial launchers for small satellites, the upcoming 42nd PSLV will carry a total of 31 satellites including 28 paid riders. Payload The main payload, the 710-kg Cartosat-2F, is the seventh in the Cartosat-2 series and is built to work for five years. Said to have a high, sub-metre resolution, it is unofficially said to serve military surveillance purposes.

ISRO is putting up two of its own small satellites a 100 kg microsatellite and the 11-kg nanosatellite INS- 1C. There are also 28 smaller customers The commercial satellites include three 100-kg class microsatellites and 25 nanosats (1-10 kg) from Canada, Finland, France, Korea the U.K. and the U.S. Cartosat It is the series of satellites are a type of earth observation satellites indigenously built by India. Up till now 6 Cartosat satellites have been launched by ISRO. The Cartosat series is a part of the Indian Remote Sensing Programme. They were specifically launched for Earth s resource management and monitoring. The first Cartosat satellite was Cartosat-1 which was launched by PSLV-C6, on May 5th 2005 from the then newly built Second Launch Pad at Sriharikota. Department of Space (DOS), Government of India had earlier launched a series of satellites for Earth s resource management and monitoring. Cartosat-2F Cartosat-2F will be launched by PSLV-C40 on 12 Jan 2018 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre's FLP,from first launchpad at Sriharikota. The PSLV-C40 rocket will launch the 710 kg satellite, the seventh of the Cartosat-2 series, along with 30 other nano satellites. In FDI push, Centre allows 49% foreign ownership in AI {Economy} The Centre on Wednesday eased several foreign direct investment norms, including allowing overseas airlines to own up to 49% of Air India and permitting 100% FDI in single brand retail and construction development under the automatic route.

Conditions Foreign investment(s) in Air India, including that of foreign airline(s), shall not exceed 49% either directly or indirectly. Substantial ownership and effective control of Air India shall continue to be vested in an Indian national. Significance The changes to the FDI norms would trigger significant interest in the carrier from foreign airlines. Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) anticipates that the divestment would help spur more jobs and growth in Air India. Allowing foreign airlines to participate will increase the number of interested bidders and the valuation within India. Centre opens arms to single brand retail FDI {Economy} The Union government liberalised and simplified the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regime in a host of sectors, including Single Brand Retail Trading (SBRT) and construction development. Five-year window The Cabinet has brought about a change in the FDI policy. The existing policy on single brand retail trading (SBRT) allows foreign players to have 49 percent stake under automatic route, and FDI beyond 49 per cent and up to 100 per cent through government approval route. After the completion of the five-year period, SBRT entities would be required to meet the 30% sourcing norms directly towards its India s operation, on an annual basis. Significance The relaxation in sourcing norms could help companies like Apple, which had been seeking exemption from the 30% local sourcing norm The move will not only attract additional foreign capital into the country, but will also provide an impetus to the retail industry growth

What are single brand and multi brand retail businesses? Single-brand retail refers to a business that sells goods to individual customers and not other businesses and such goods are all sold under the same brand. Nike, for example, sets up stores in India in which the foreign parent of Nike (Nike Inc.) invests. Such stores can only sell Nike products under the 'single brand' route. Multi-brand retail are businesses that sell goods to individual customers and such goods can carry several different brands. Walmart is an example of multi-brand retail, which stocks and sells goods from various brands. What does this mean for regular consumers? This will provide for more options for consumers thus raising competition. With foreign players coming in, Indian domestic retail sector has to ramp up its game. Two-tier shield for Aadhaar data {Governance} Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has rolled out a two-tier security process that will come into effect from June 1, 2018

Two-tier security virtual ID & KYC A Virtual ID (VID) It will be a temporary 16-digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number. There can only be one active and valid VID for an Aadhaar number at any given time and it will not be possible to derive the Aadhaar number from VID The VID authentication will be similar to using Aadhaar numbers. However, since a VID is temporary, agencies will not be able to use it for de-duplication. Context How will you issue Aadhaar for the homeless, asks Supreme Court {Governance} It arose during the hearing on the lack of night shelters for homeless people. The court had previously summoned the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary to explain the lack of night shelters, especially with North India in the grip of a cold wave. The Supreme Court questioned the government s version of Aadhaar as a unique identifier which will benefit the poor to access welfare services, asking how will the lakhs of homeless people in the country get an Aadhaar card without a permanent address.

Plight of migrants The urban homeless were mostly migrants from the rural parts of the country. They would have a permanent address in their native villages and would have or could apply for Aadhaar there. Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) To reduce poverty and vulnerability of the urban poor households by enabling them to access gainful selfemployment and skilled wage employment opportunities, resulting in an appreciable improvement in their livelihoods on a sustainable basis, through building strong grassroots level institutions of the poor. Objective Providing shelters equipped with essential services to the urban homeless in a phased manner. In addition, the mission would also address livelihood concerns of the urban street vendors by facilitating access to suitable spaces, institutional credit, social security and skills to the urban street vendors for accessing emerging market opportunities. Documents Required for New Aadhaar Card The document must contain your name and photo e.g. Driving Licence, passport, pan card etc. Address proof. China to fund base in Afghanistan {International} China will fund construction of an Afghan counterterrorism base in Badakshan province to block cross-border infiltration of the ethnic Uyghur militants. Highlight Chinese side would cover all material and technical expenses for this base weaponry, uniforms for soldiers, military equipment and everything else necessary for its functioning. Reason behind this move For making contributions to the development of China-Afghanistan strategic partnership of cooperation. The largest group of Uyghur militants already resides in Badakhshan, from where they can rapidly shift to China.
