In FDI push, Centre allows 49% foreign ownership in AI {Economy} The Centre on Wednesday eased several foreign direct investment norms, including allowing overseas airlines to own up to 49% of Air India and permitting 100% FDI in single brand retail and construction development under the automatic route.
Conditions Foreign investment(s) in Air India, including that of foreign airline(s), shall not exceed 49% either directly or indirectly. Substantial ownership and effective control of Air India shall continue to be vested in an Indian national. Significance The changes to the FDI norms would trigger significant interest in the carrier from foreign airlines. Allowing foreign airlines to participate will increase the number of interested bidders and the valuation within India. After the completion of the five-year period, SBRT entities would be required to meet the 30% sourcing norms directly towards its India s operation, on an annual basis. Significance The relaxation in sourcing norms could help companies like Apple, which had been seeking exemption from the 30% local sourcing norm The move will not only attract additional foreign capital into the country, but will also provide an impetus to the retail industry growth
What are single brand and multi brand retail businesses? Single-brand retail refers to a business that sells goods to individual customers and not other businesses and such goods are all sold under the same brand. Multi-brand retail are businesses that sell goods to individual customers and such goods can carry several different brands. Walmart is an example of multi-brand retail, which stocks and sells goods from various brands. What does this mean for regular consumers? This will provide for more options for consumers thus raising competition. With foreign players coming in, Indian domestic retail sector has to ramp up its game.
