HISTORICAL SKETCH Church Women United is an ecumenical service organization that has both a state and local chapters. The Indianapolis chapter traces its founding to 1898 when a group of church women led by Mrs. J. D. Forest and Mrs. W. H. H. Shank formed a Missionary Social Union similar to those in emerging in other cities around the country. The organization was designed to be an umbrella organization for city's evangelical women's societies. In 1929 the organization was instrumental in sponsoring the Missionary Education Institute in Indianapolis. A state wide association formed around this time and two years later both became part of the Council of Federated Church Women. The name was altered to United Church Women around 1940 and in 1950 they became part of the National Council of Churches. After a 1966 national reorganization that separated the United Church Women from the National Council of Churches, the association became known as Church Women United. In the early 1970s a state reorganization took place that divided Indiana into eleven areas, each of which elected a member to a state board, which in turn sent members to the National Assembly. The group's participation has included World Day of Prayer (dating from 1922), World Community Day (dating from 1944), May Fellowship Day (dating from 1956) as well as Spring and Fall forums. They have also supported International Women's Year, Women in Community Service and local Indianapolis charities such as Flanner House, Goodwill Industries, and Wheeler Mission Ministries. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection comprises the records of the Church Women United for Indianapolis and Indiana, 1916 98, and is divided into three series based on the source of the acquisition.

Series 1 (boxes 1 17) contains the records from the Indianapolis council and was housed with those of the Church Federation of Indianapolis. Included among the records are meeting minutes and correspondence, 1932 85; financial records, 1944 58; and programs, 1967 90. Also contained in this series are scrapbooks, newsclippings and other printed holdings relating to the historical activities of the organization, 1940 84; yearbooks listing members for both the Indianapolis and Indiana groups, 1933 96; and newsletters for the local, state, and national associations, 1941 80. Other areas in this series include programs and activities of the Indianapolis council including the Missionary Education Institute, 1931 72; World Community Day, 1944 68; and humanitarian efforts such as the homeless, violence, racial prejudice, and criminal assistance, 1940s 80s. The most voluminous amount of material pertains to the organization's effort for the World Day of Prayer, 1916 92. Among the records are publications, correspondence, organizational records, meetings, statistics, and programs. Series 2 (boxes 18 26) center around correspondence and printed materials collected by Indianapolis council president's Billie Watkins and Jane Fribley, 1973 95. Items include correspondence, meeting minutes, publications, and scrapbooks. Series 3 (boxes 27 30) mainly contain records of the Indiana council, 1953 98. The series encompasses board minutes, 1969 95; newsletters, 1987 98; and information regarding local areas and units throughout the state, 1940 96.
