58" x 68" (Block size 10½") Black, White & Red All Over Designed and sewn by Kim Schultz It s time to let loose and forget all the rules! This is a great quilt for beginners because you can t make a mistake with this one. This is also a great time to explore those feet, the ones that came with your sewing machine that you forgot you had! 16 Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine Nancy Fiedler
Celtic Sunrise Random lengths of decorative stitches are stitched all over the quilt top. Vary the widths and decorative stitches. Lay out the batting strips, overlapping the point. Pin the overlap together at the same 45-degree angle matching the strips of fabric. Lay a strip of fabric over the top of the batting right-side up. Lay the matching fabric strip on top of the first strip with right sides together to create the chevron. Free-motion stipple where needed and desired to even out the stitched layering of the background quilt. Square the wallhanging to 40" x 40". The Flange Cut 4 flange strips 1½" across the width of fabric. Press in half, wrong sides together. Sew the flange around the outside of the quilt using a ¼" seam allowance, placing the flange on the top and bottom first, and then on either side. Sew a ¼" seam on both sides of the strips of fabric creating a tube. Trim the batting close to the seam. Turn right-side out through one of the tube ends. Press flat, making sure the strip width measures 2". Do this to all 5 colors. Quilt each chevron strip as desired. Quilting in the hoop using digitized quilting designs built into the embroidery machine was used on Celtic Sunrise (see page 13). Woven Strips Cut strips of fabric and batting: 4 strips yellow 4½" by width of fabric 4 strips each: pink, red, light blue, and dark blue 2½" by width of fabric 2 strips batting 6" by 40" 8 strips batting 4" by 40" Sew the strips of fabric together to make a 45-degree corner, or chevron. Press seams open. After all the chevrons are quilted, lay them out as desired (the sample was done as a sunrise yellow, red, pink, light blue, dark blue), weaving the strips onto the green background, centering the design as desired. Tack invisibly. Baste the chevron raw edges along the flange raw edge. Trim excess fabric. Bind the quilt using any desired technique. Embellishing Heat-set rhinestones were applied to the interwoven strips. Loose beads and stones were hand sewn onto the green background. 22 Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine Nancy Fiedler
Quilted Centerpiece 24½" x 28½" Designed and sewn by Carol McKinney This project uses paper piecing and gets texture and dimension from the piping and pleated section. This piece was designed so you don t have to sew any curved seams! 24 Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine Nancy Fiedler
Birds in Paradise 58" x 68" Designed and sewn by Nancy Fiedler Each quilt top is a canvas on which you can tell a story. For this top imagine what would happen if you were looking through a cracked and broken window at the birds frolicking in the floral jungle. What a surprise if they flew into the room! 34 Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine Nancy Fiedler
Collision of Color 36½" x 25" Designed and sewn by Mary Carollo A mixture of strong colors and textures make this project burst into a graphic explosion. The visual contrast between sueded cotton, dupioni silk, cotton lamé, and a few splashes of something sparkly add depth to the simple geometry of the shapes. This is the perfect project for those small fabric treasures you ve been saving for so long, because any size piece of fabric can be a star in this show. 38 Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine Nancy Fiedler
