Standard Window Integral Flange After Housewrap Pro-Build Providing 3 layers of protection Windows Installation Method Considerations Framed wall with sheathing Housewrap applied prior to windows Standard window with integral nailing flange Pro-System Layer 1: Integrate the Opening Step 1: Prepare the opening Step 2: Apply the sill pan (flexible) Step 2a: Apply the sill pan (Alternate: straight flash) Step 3: Seal the window Step 4: Install the window Pro-System Layer 2: Flash the Window Step 5: Apply flashing to the jambs Step 6: Apply head flashing Step 7: Overlap the housewrap Pro-System Layer 3: Seal the Interior of the Window Step 8: Create the interior seal Materials List: Specified sealant 6 flexible self-adhesive flashing 6 self-adhesive flashing (alternate) 4 self-adhesive flashing Housewrap tape
Inspection Prior to installation of the window, the opening should be checked for the correct size and that the rough sill is flat. Also check for level, plumb, and square. No more than a 1/4 tolerance in any direction should be accepted. Notify the contractor of discrepancies prior to installation. : Step 1 Prepare the Opening Prepare the opening Cut an I into the housewrap so the bottom is flush with the sill and the top is flush with the header Cut a 6 45-degree angle from each of the top corners so you can fold the housewrap out of the way Fold the sides back into the house, secure, and then cut off the excess
: Step 2 Apply the Sill Pan (flexible) Apply the Sill Pan (flexible) Cut 6 self-adhesive flexible flashing 8 or more longer than the opening (flexible shown in blue) Apply flexible flashing a minimum of 2 over the face of the opening; flashing must cover the depth of the window (2x4 wall = 6 flashing, 2x6 wall = 9 flashing) Flashing should come up the jamb a minimum of 4 on each side Roll on with a J roller to ensure adhesion : Step 2a Alternate - Apply the Sill Pan Alternate -Apply the Sill Pan Cut a Bowtie with 4 -wide self-adhesive flashing, approx. 4-5 long Bowtie should be 1 in the center Peel off backing and apply to corner so that the 1 center sits over the corner Pull the other end of bowtie out over the housewrap, and push it firmly into place Make sure that there are no air pockets where the window will cut the flashing when installed
: Step 2a (continued) Alternate - Apply the Sill Pan Alternate - Apply the Sill Pan (continued) Cut a piece of self adhesive flashing 8 longer than the width of the rough opening Position the flashing along the back edge of the sill, and work it from the center to the corners, pushing them in tight so that the window will not tear it later Work the flashing 4 up each jamb Cut from the corner diagonally away from the opening on each side Fold the face down, then fold the sides : Step 3 Seal the Window Seal the Window Make sure the flange on the window is clean and clear of debris Seal any missing corner joinery or other discontinuous areas on the window Apply a 3/8 bead of sealant (shown in red) on the top and sides of the window Apply a 3/8 discontinuous bead of sealant on the sill, leaving two to three 2 voids at the bottom so that incidental moisture has a path to drain to the exterior
: Step 4 Install the Window Install the Window Hold the window against the opening and check that the window is plumb, level and square. Shim as necessary. Secure the window in accordance with manufacturer s specifications and in compliance with local codes Check the window for proper operation and reveal : Step 5 Apply Flashing to the Jambs Apply Flashing to the Jambs Cut two pieces of 4 self-adhesive flashing long enough to extend 3 1/2 above the head of the window and below far enough to cover the sill flashing Apply the flashing over the nail flange on both sides of the window Use a J roller to ensure good adhesion, making sure there are no bubbles or creases that could invite moisture
: Step 6 Apply Head Flashing Apply Head Flashing Cut a piece of 4 self-adhesive flashing long enough to extend 1 past the jamb flashing on each side Apply the head flashing on top of the window, covering the nail holes Use a J roller to ensure good adhesion, making sure there are no bubbles or creases that could invite moisture (when necessary use a primer or spray adhesive) : Step 7 Overlap the Housewrap Overlap the Housewrap Overlap head flashing and tape the 45-degree angle cuts with an approved housewrap tape Seal any voids or tears in the housewrap that are above the window
: Step 8 Create the Interior Seal Create the Interior Seal Apply an interior seal with OSI s TeQ:FOAM low expansion foam If the opening is too small for the foam, apply a tooled bead of sealant Interior must be completely sealed around the entire perimeter of the window If shims are in the way, trim the excess shim so that a continuous seal can be achieved Do not let sealant interfere with interior finish products
