In-The-Hoop Purse by Betty Henriksen of Cooper s Stitches Supplies: Fabric for purse outside Fabric for lining and card holder Zipper - 9 inch or larger Velcro - 5/8 inch wide Steam-A-Seam (double stick fusible web) - ½ inch wide Chain Link for strap - 42 inches (optional) Grosgrain Ribbon - 3/8 inch (optional) Preparation: Purse Back - Cut one piece of fabric and one piece of lining 8-1/4" wide x 6" high. Back Pocket - Cut one piece of fabric 8 1/4" wide x 5" high and one piece lining 8-1/4" wide x 4-3/4" high. Pocket Flap - Cut one piece of fabric and one piece of lining 7" wide x 3 ½" high. Card Holder - Cut one piece of lining 4 3/4" wide x 14" long. Purse Front - Cut one piece of fabric and one piece of lining 8-1/4" wide x 1 ½" high and 8-1/4" wide x 4-3/4" high. Purse Strap - Cut fabric 1 ½" wide x 44" long. (Disregard this if using chain for strap or making clutch purse.) Hooping #1 (CSBHITHPHooping 01) Hoop Tearaway Stabilizer in 5x7 inch hoop and stitch 1 step st (placement lines).

Place pocket flap lining fabric, right side up, over flap outline with lower edge just above the placement line for the pocket. nd Stitch 2 step attaching the fabric and stitching placement for the velcro. Spray the back side of the soft Velcro (1-3/4" length) with temporary spray adhesive and position it over the oval outline. Stitch step 3. Trim velcro close to stitching. Stitch step 4 - Satin stitching around velcro. Press under ½ inch of the top edge of the pocket piece. Lay the folded edge even with the straight placement line with each side edge extending 5/8" beyond the line. Stitch step 5 - placement for velcro piece. Spray the back side of the loopy piece of velcro with temporary spray adhesive and position the piece over the oval outline of the pocket piece. Stitch step 6 and trim the velcro close to the stitching. Stitch step 7 - satin stitching around velcro. Remove stabilizer from the hoop and remove tearaway stabilizer from the two pieces. Press under ½ inch of the pocket lining fabric and fuse one side of Steam-A-Seam (8-1/4" length) to the folded edge. Place the lining fabric over the pocket piece, wrong sides facing, matching the side and bottom edges. Fuse the pieces together. Hooping #2 (CSBHITHPHooping02 with selected design) Hoop Tearaway Stabilizer in 5x7 inch hoop and stitch 1 step (placement line for st pocket flap).

Place the pocket flap fabric over the outline with the sides and lower edge extending beyond the outline, approx. 1/4". Stitch step 2 which will sew the fabric to the stabilizer. Stitch the embroidery design. Place the pocket flap lining, right side down, over the flap front - matching edges. Stitch the last step. Remove the stabilizer from the hoop and remove the tearaway stabilizer from the flap. Trim the sides and lower edge close to the stitching. Turn the flap, right sides out and press. Hooping #3 (CSBHITHPHooping03) Hoop Tearaway Stabilizer in a 6x10 inch, or larger, hoop and stitch step 1. Center the purse back fabric piece over the outline and stitch step 2. This will attach the fabric to the stabilizer and stitch a placement outline for the card holder. Card Holder On the 4-3/4" x 14" piece of fabric make markings as follows: from the top edge make a mark 3-1/2" down. Make a second mark 2-1/4" down from the first mark. Make a third mark 1-3/4" down from the second mark. Make a fourth mark 2-1/4" down from the third mark. Make a fifth mark 1-3/4" down from the fourth mark. The measurement from the fifth mark to the bottom of the fabric will be 2-1/2". These marks are the fold lines. Starting at the last marking, 2-1/2" from the bottom edge, fan fold the fabric to form two pockets. The 3-1/2" top part will fold to the back side.

Place the folded card holder over the outline with the top edge slightly below the stitching. Hold in place with tape. Stitch step 3. Trim the card hold fabric close to the stitching. Stitch step 4 which is a satin stitch around the holder. Place the pocket piece, right side facing up, over the purse back piece, matching the sides and bottom edges. Stitch step 5. Position the pocket flap, right side up, over the pocket. Line the velcro pieces up and hook together. Hold top edges in place using tape. Stitch step 6. Trim top edge of flap close the stitching. Stitch step 7, which is a satin stitch to finish the top edge. Turn the hoop over and place the purse back lining fabric, right side facing up, over the stitching lines. Stitch stop 8. Remove from hoop and remove the tearaway stabilizer from the purse back. Hooping #4 (CSBHITHPHooping04 with selected design) Hoop tearaway stabilizer in 6x10 inch, or larger, hoop and stitch step 1. This is a placement marking for the zipper. Position the zipper, right side facing up, over the placement lines, with the zipper teeth centered between the lines. Both ends of the zipper will extend beyond the markings. Stitch step 2, which will stitch the zipper to the stabilizer. Place the purse front fabric piece (8-1/4" x 4-3/4"), right side facing down, over the zipper matching the top edge of the fabric with the lower edge of the zipper tape. Use tape to hold in place.

Turn the hoop over and repeat this step with the lining fabric. Stitch step 3. Finger press the front fabric only away from the zipper. Use tape to hold the lower edges in place. Stitch step 4. Stitch embroidery design. Turn the hoop over and finger press the lining fabric away from the zipper. Hold the lower corners in place with tape. Repeat the above steps to attach the fabric and lining (8-1/4" x 1-1/2" pieces) above the zipper. Finger press the fabric and lining fabric away from the zipper. Hold the corners in place with tape. Stitch the next two steps. Purse Strap attachment - or tab attachment, if using a chain link strap. To make the strap, cut a piece of fabric 44" in length x 1 ½" in width. Fold the fabric in half, lengthwise, right side facing out. Press. Open the fabric and fold each long edge toward the center fold. Press. Fold together along center fold and press. On your sewing machine, top stitch close to both long edges. If using a chain link strap, cut two pieces of 3/8" wide grosgrain ribbon 2 ½" in length, fold in half matching cut edges. Place the raw edges of the strap, or the grosgrain ribbon tabs, even with the top edge of the purse and in approximately 1" from the side stitching. Hold in place with tape. Stitch the next step which will stitch the strap or tabs in place.

***Before proceeding further, open the zipper 3/4 of the way.*** Position the purse back section, right side facing down - lining side facing up, over the purse front, matching all edges. For purses with matching strap, secure the lower sections of the purse, below the zipper, in place using tape - but keep the strap to the outside. Stitch the next step which will stitch the purse back to the purse front below the zipper. For clutch type purse (no strap) or purse with chain link strap, use tape to secure all corners and edges and stitch the next two steps, which will attach the purse back to the purse front. For purses with a matching strap, after stitching the front to the back below the zipper, push the strap down inside the purse. Pull the upper portion to match the upper edges of the purse front and hold in place with tape. Stitch the next step, which will stitch the upper portion of the purse back to the purse front. Stitch the final step. This step puts a zigzag stitch around the edges of the purse. Remove the hoop from the machine and the stabilizer from the hoop. Tear away the stabilizer from the purse and trim close to the zigzag stitching. Remove the stabilizer from the back side of the zipper and turn the purse right side out through the zipper opening.
