DOWNSTREAM POWER, CONTROL & INSTRUMENTATION CABLES

DOWNSTREAM FACILITY CABLES El Dorado, Arkansas Made in America CIR (Crush & Impact Resistant) CIR is a next-generation cable designed to replace older-technology cables like Type MC. CIR has been successfully used globally since 00 for missioncritical equipment operating in harsh environments. CIR passes the same crush and impact testing required by UL 5 for Type MC-HL without the use of external armoring. CIR cables are GEXOL insulated which provides a lower dielectric constant, allowing longer VFD output cable lengths. Highly flexible, small bend radius, reduced tray fill and impervious to water and air. UL Listed as Type TC-ER (Standard CIR) suitable for a variety of uses, including those where tray cables are not practical or costprohibitive. UL Listed as Type TC-ER-HL (Arctic Grade CIR) suitable for a variety of uses in Class, Div and Zone environments including those where tray cables are not practical or cost-prohibitive. (Cables up to in diameter) See pages - FREP/CPE TYPE TC or TC-ER Recommended for power, lighting, control, and signal circuits; indoors or outdoors; in cable trays, raceways or where supported in outdoor locations by a messenger wire; for Class circuits as permitted in Article 75 of the NEC; and in cable trays in Class I, Division hazardous locations in industrial establishments where the conditions of maintenance and supervision assure that only qualified persons will service the installation. See pages -9 VFD Cables Nexans AmerCable VFD Cables are specially engineered to provide 00% containment of EMI emissions and provide longer cable life in VFD applications. Nexans AmerCable VFD cables feature symmetrical insulated grounds, high strand count conductors and braid shield design for a flexible, easier to install and more vibration resistant cable. Available in 5 constructions. See pages 0- Nexans AmerCable believes the information presented throughout this catalog to be reliable and current. All information is subject to change without notice. Type MMV (Medium Voltage) Power Type MMV cables are designed for use as feeders or branch circuits in industrial facilities. These cables utilize flexible stranded conductors, braided shields and a braided armor (optional) which make them very suitable for applications involving repeated flexing and high vibration These cables have a small minimum bending radius for easy installation. See pages -5 CORFLEX Cables CORFLEX cables are designed for reliable performance in a variety of oil and gas downstream, industrial, commercial and utility applications which require an externally armored cable. Nexans CORFLEX MC-HL and MV-05 or MC-HL cables can be installed in hazardous locations designated Class I, II & III, Divisions & as per NEC 008 and NEC 0 (HL Rated). See pages -9 RHH or RHW- Cables Recommended for general power and control cable applications up to 90 C in wet or dry locations. FEATURES Specially engineered cable design produces a longer cable life in VFD applications in severe cold environments. Exceeds CSA cold bend/cold impact (-0 C/-5 F) Brittlepoint as per ASTM D 7-07 exceeds -5 C for and -75 C for insulation Overall braid and foil shield provides 00% coverage containing VFD EMI emissions. Symmetrical insulated ground conductors reduce induced voltage imbalances and carry common mode noise back to the drive. High strand count conductors and braid shield design is much more flexible, easier to install and more resistant to vibration than Type MC cable. Gexol s lower dielectric constant (standard XLPEs, EPRs and other Type RHW insulation materials have higher dielectric constants) reduces reflected wave peak voltage magnitudes. This allows for longer output cable distances and minimizes the effect of high frequency noise induced into the plant ground system. kv insulation thickness resists the repetitive x voltage spikes from 00V VFDs and reduces drive over current trip problems due to cable charging current. CABLE SELECTION GUIDE FOR VFD APPLICATIONS The circuit of a typical voltage source PWM drive is shown in Figure. Each part of the equipment is bonded to the safety earth system to ensure personnel safety if faults occur. All parts have capacitance to ground shown by: CM for the motor windings. CC and CC for the power converter circuits. CT for the transformer s secondary winding to the transformers screen. The IGBT switches are in constant operation at high frequency and this produces an inverter output voltage with a PWM wave shape as shown by the voltage V(Figure ). Transformer Shield Earth Bond CT l Power Converter Diodes IGBT Switches CC Earth Bond CC Safety Earth System l V V Motor CM Earth Bond This IGBT switches also cause a motor line to ground voltage V (Figure ), normally called a common mode voltage. Inverter Line to Line Voltage V Motor Ground Current I Motor Line to Ground Voltage V The common mode voltages cause short high-frequency pulses of common mode current to flow in the safety earth circuits, shown by currents I and I (Figure ), unless the design includes cable features to stop this from happening. It is essential that the common mode currents return to the inverter without causing EMC - EMI problems in other equipment, and this means that the common mode currents I and I must not flow in the safety earthing system. For the motor, this is achieved by connecting a set of wires from the motor to the inverter that run with the main power cables. These are called symmetrical grounding conductors, see Figure. These conductors have a very low impedance compared with the other return path via the safety earthing system. The three symmetrical grounding conductors and overall shields are connected as shown in Figure. This 0 connection is essential. The common mode currents I and I now flow in the symmetrical grounding conductors. This happens because the symmetrical grounding conductors are close to the power conductors giving a low impedance route for the currents I and I compared with the safety earthing system. As I and I flow near the power conductors this avoids creating external EMC - EMI problems. F I G U R E Figures - courtesy of Converteam www.nexansamercable.com e-mail: downstream@nexans.com

If symmetrical grounding conductors and an overall EMI shield are not used, EMC - EMI problems are very likely to occur. For cables used with voltage source PWM drives, a number of features are required to ensure correct operation, avoid overheating and achieve longer service life. Shield Transformer The essential features of a medium voltage cable for PWM drives are : F I G U R E designed to withstand the transients produced by the PWM with a dielectric constant no greater than.0 to minimize capacitance Voltage rating of x the operating voltage to prevent corona Three symmetrical grounding conductors. Some cables only have one grounding conductor. This is not acceptable as it produces circulating currents in the earth system Extremely fine strands to carry the harmonic currents without overheating (i.e. the inductance of fine stranded conductors is less than 7, 9, 7 strand conductors) Overall shield to stop the radiation of voltage EMI fields Correct termination at both ends Semi-conducting shield around each insulation layer (MMV only) Metallic layer around each semi-conducting shield to earth the semi-conducting shield (MMV only) CT Earth Bond l Power Converter CC Inverter CC Earth Bond Safety Earth System Grounding Conductors l Motor CM Earth Bond R S T PE VFD U V W PE VFD CABLE MOTOR V LL Low-Smoke Halogen-Free and Fire Resistant constructions available. CORFLEX PULLING INSTRUCTIONS Certain installations require the pulling of CORFLEX into ducts or trays. These installations require careful planning and execution. The following provides information on how to calculate tensions developed during pulling and what precautions to take to prevent damage to the cable. Pulling Tension The maximum tension applied to a cable is limited to prevent damage or distortion of cable components which could reduce the life or reliability of the cable. The method of pulling is significant in that different methods will result in different stresses on critical cable components for the same overall tension. Nexans AmerCable recommends that CORFLEX MC-HL Instrumentation 00V cables are pulled by means of the aluminum sheath and jacket with a grip applied over the jacketed core, sheath and overall jacket. All other CORFLEX cable types described in this catalog should be pulled by means of the conductors, aided with a grip over the outer aluminum sheath. The conductors and the sheath must be pulled together. Maximum allowable pulling tensions for CORFLEX cables should never exceed the values shown in pulling tension table. Calculating Pulling Tensions The tension developed in any Straight Section of duct is calculated as: T = L x W x f lbf where L = section length (feet) W = cable weight per unit length (lb/foot) f = coefficient of dynamic friction The tension developed in any Bend is calculated as: T = T x e fa lbf where T = tension at bend entrance (lbf) e = base of natural logarithms (.788) f = coefficient of dynamic friction a = angle of bend (radians) or e fa is given in the following table for common conditions: Bend Angle f=0. f=0. f=0.5 f=0.0.08.7.0. 5..7..7 0.7.7..5 90.7.0.7.88 Coefficients of dynamic friction with lubricant are given in the following table for common duct and cable jacket materials. These coefficients can be used for calculation of tensions. Coefficient Duct Type Cable of Friction PVC PVC 0. PE PVC 0. Fiber PVC 0.0 Asbestos Cement PVC 0.70 Considerations must be given to Side Wall Bearing Pressure (SWBP) when pulling CORFLEX through a bend. The SWBP is calculated as follows: SWBP = Pulling Tension Cable at Bend Exit (lbf) Radius of Bend (feet) For CORFLEX, Nexans AmerCable recommends a maximum SWBP of 0 pounds force/foot. During installation of the CORFLEX cable, it is recommended that the bend radii be as noted in the cable descriptions. Pulling in Duct It is extremely important for the success of any pull in duct to use approved lubricants. Lubricants must be compatible with the cable jacket and duct material. Lubricating the pulling rope will decrease the tension on the pulling equipment and more importantly will reduce the risk of damage to the inside of the duct which in turn can damage the cable. When designing the duct layout, it is suggested that the bends be concentrated near the end from which the cable is to be pulled. This practice will result in lower tensions. In some cases, the tensions resulting from alternative directions should be calculated. Pulling in Trays & Trenches For the installation of CORFLEX in trays, rollers are normally used. Using well lubricated rollers and long radius sheaves at bends will result in a lower coefficient of friction when compared to duct. A coefficient of friction of 0. can be used when calculating pulling tension using rollers. For long pulls with bends it may be necessary to install assist pullers before the bends to reduce the tension on the cable entering a bend and reducing the risk of damage from excessive SWBP. The recommendations given above are intended to cover a wide variety of pulling conditions. It is possible, under ideal conditions, and with experienced supervision, to exceed these limits.
