Use Hydro-stick Tear-away Stabilizer rather than hooping the fabric. Simply hoop the stabilizer and adhere the fabric to the sticky area of the stabilizer. Economize by using stabilizer on a roll. Instead of cutting the stabilizer to the size of the hoop, keep the stabilizer on the roll when you hoop. After embroidering, carefully tear away the fabric from the stabilizer. Give the stabilizer a quick press to smooth out the wrinkles from the first hooping. Then rehoop the next section of stabilizer and continue embroidering. Design placement and alignment tip for Block 10 composite: to ensure proper placement and alignment of designs, we recommend that you print templates for each of the designs used and arrange the embroidery composition on block background fabric. Although you can use conventional printer paper to print templates, using Translucent Foundation Paper will allow you to see through the paper, making it easier to align the designs. Be sure to trim away excess paper around the stitch field for easier arranging. Tape templates in place with Sewer's Fix-It Tape. Note: The low tack adhesive of Sewer s Fix-It Tape allows the tape to be removed easily without leaving adhesive residue on your fabric. All embroidery design components are pictured on the following pages. The Block 10 composite grouping indicates the order in which the various designs making up that grouping should be stitched. In each instance, start with background designs and work toward foreground designs. Some designs are embroidered over portions of other designs. Design Layout and Modifications: The guides on the following pages indicate which designs were used, where those designs were placed on the quilt, and how the designs were modified (rotated and/or mirror imaged). Use the thread colors specified on the color chart included with the designs. * = Mirror image horizontally =Special instructions = Degrees to rotate left 2017, Nancy s Notions ; 333 Beichl Ave., PO Box 683; Beaver Dam WI 53916-0683
Instructions: Note: Read all instructions before beginning the project. All seam allowances are ¼" unless otherwise stated. Finished Quilt Size: Approximately 36½" x 45¼" 1. Prepare and cut fabrics for embroidery: Starch all block background, block sashing, binding, and backing fabrics well using spray starch or a starch alternative. Allow the fabric dry completely before folding, cutting, and sewing. From Fabric A (block background): - Cut three crosswise strips at 10½" wide: * Subcut the background strips into ten 10½" x 10½" squares. - Cut two crosswise strips at 6" wide. From Fabric B (sashing and binding): - Cut seven 3" wide crosswise strips for sashing: * Subcut sashing strips into twenty 3" x 9½" rectangles. * Subcut sashing strips into twenty 3" x 4½" rectangles. - Cut five 2½" wide crosswise strips for binding. 2. Embroider designs on block background squares: Place the Hydro-Stick Stabilizer in your hoop. Apply one background square, centered, to the activated adhesive surface of the hooped stabilizer. Embroider the appliqué designs: - Follow the instructions included on the CD to appliqué nine of the blocks. Note: Fuse paper-backed fusible web to the back side of the appliqué fabric. Do not fuse the entire fabric but in small useable pieces. Remove the paper side before appliquéing. Do not fuse; fusing will be done at the end of the embroidery process. - Appliqué Block 10 (a composite of designs) using the placement guide on the following page or create your own design. - Embroider small designs 3" 3½" apart across the 6" fabric strips. To determine which designs were used, use the placement guided on the following pages. Add two side 3" x 9½" rectangles of Fabric B to each partially sashed appliqué block: - Align the edge of the block to one long edge of the rectangle sashing, right sides together and edges even. Pin. - Stitch removing pins as you sew. - Press seams flat, then toward the sashing. - Repeat steps to add the remaining side sashing. Repeat the previous steps to make a total of ten sashed blocks, measuring 9½" x 9½". Note: Measure across the block from edge to edge, making note of the dimension if it is different from the size noted below and cut based on your measurement. 4. Arrange and assemble the quilt top: Arrange the appliqué and sashed blocks on a flat work surface or design wall using the image on p. 1 as a guide. Stitch blocks into the needed number of rows, right sides together and edges even. Sew blocks into rows Press seams flat, then press seams to one side. Press the next row so the seams are pressed in the opposite directions of the previous row. Press rows in opposite directions Note: Place templates along the strip to help determine placement and utilize the fabric strip. After embroidery is completed, gently remove excess stabilizer. Press each block fusing the appliqué pieces. Trim embroidered squares using the Trim and Set Template: - Trim the large appliqué squares to 9½" x 9½" blocks, following the instructions on pp. 1-2 of the Trim and Set Template book. - Trim the small squares to 4½" x 4½" blocks following the instructions on pp. 1-2 of the Trim and Set Template book. 3. Sash the small appliqué blocks: Add two 3" x 4½" rectangles of Fabric B to a small appliqué block: - Align the top edge of the block to one long edge of the rectangle frame, right sides together and edges even. Pin. - Stitch removing pins as you sew. - Press seams flat, then toward the sashing. - Repeat steps to add the lower sashing to the small appliqué block. Stitch rows, right sides together, nesting the seam allowances to create the quilt top. Press seams flat, then press seams open. Note: This quilt was designed without borders. If you choose to include borders, additional fabric will be needed. Add them at this time using your favorite techniques. 5. Complete the quilt: Square quilt, if needed. Layer, quilt, and bind quilt: - Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). - Pin layers together, avoiding embroidery design. - Quilt as desired. Optional: Add a rod pocket at this point, if desired. Add binding: - Use the five 2½" strips cut from Fabric B (toast brown) and join them together. - Bind quilt as desired.
