EDUCATION Ph.D. Computer Science, Centre for Vision Research, York University, Toronto, Canada September 2006- April 2015 Ph.D. Dissertation: Automatic extraction of closed contours bounding salient objects: New algorithms and evaluation methods In this dissertation, a novel method for performance evaluation of object segmentation methods is proposed and shown to be most consistent with human judgements. In addition, an effective method for combining local and global cues for automatic extraction of closed contours bounding salient objects in natural images is proposed, showing considerably better performance than four other state-of-the-art contour grouping methods. Main components of research: Computer Vision, Image Segmentation, Contour Grouping using Gestalt cues Similarity measures for 2D shapes Machine Learning, Gaussian Mixture Models, Maximum Likelihood and MAP estimation, Regression, Kernel Density Estimation, K-means Clustering, Principal Component Analysis Other research focuses: Level Sets and Fast Marching methods, Pedestrian detection by detection of body parts (working with a summer student) M. Eng. Computer Engineering- Amir Kabir University of Technology, Tehran, Iran September 1996- November 1999 M. Eng. Thesis: Human face profile recognition In this thesis, various descriptors such as geometric measures, Fourier descriptors, and cosine transform descriptors are used in identification of a set of individuals from their side view images captured in various illuminations and sizes, reaching an identification rate of 81.34% comparable with many complex frontal view recognition methods. Main components of research: Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, Classification and Identification, Fourier descriptors, Cosine and Hartley coefficients, Wavelet transform Other research focuses: Neural networks, Self-organizing maps, Graph theory B. Eng. Electrical Engineering, Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran September 1992- August 1996 B. Eng. Thesis: Power plant design program setup In this thesis, data regarding power plant design was collected from different sources and organizations. This data was used for testing a software program recommending the type of power plant and its design parameters based on input data. Vida Movahedi, Ph.D.- Curriculum Vitae Page 1 of 6
