Installation Guide for E-Series/Eagle Clad Hinged Inswing French Door Thank you for choosing Andersen. Instructions are for typical, new wood-framed wall construction with weather protection in place. Instructions may not be right for all installations due to building design, construction materials or methods used and/or building or site conditions. Consult a contractor or architect for recommendations. Flanges on the unit alone will not properly flash and seal the window. Follow these instructions carefully. For questions call 1-888-888-7020. Due to ongoing product changes, updated test results and/or industry best practices, this installation procedure may change over time. For updated installation guides, removal instructions and/or additional installation information, visit eaglewindow.com. Contact local authorities or waste management companies for proper recycling and/or disposal of removed window or patio door. Please leave this guide with building owner. Read guide from beginning to end before starting installation. Read all warnings and cautions during unit installation. Check with your local building code official to identify and confirm compliance with local building code requirements. Doing so may result in injury, product or property damage. Windows and doors can be heavy. Use safe lifting techniques and a reasonable number of people with enough strength to lift, carry and install window and door products to avoid injury and/or product damage. Use caution when working at elevated heights and around unit openings. Follow manufacturers instructions for ladders and/or scaffolding. Failure to do so may result in injury or death. Follow manufacturers instructions for hand or power tools. Always wear safety glasses. Failure to do so may result in injury and/or product damage. 1. Prepare Rough Opening Verify that the rough opening is plumb, level, square and sized appropriately. Square Level 2. Cut Weather-resistant Barrier Cut weather-resistant barrier in numbered order as shown. Make a 6" cut up from each top corner at a 45 angle to allow the weather barrier to be lapped over the installation flange at the head of the door. 4 2 Utility Knife 1 5 3 3. Secure Weather-resistant Barrier Fold side flaps of the weather-resistant barrier into the opening and staple to inside wall. Fold top flap up and temporarily fasten with tape as shown. Stapler 2

4. Remove Door Packaging 5. Apply Extension Jambs, if Required by Installation Use of extension jambs over 1/2" may impede door swing. 6. Option 1 - If Necessary, Apply Adjustable Metal Installation Flange For use in adjustable wall depth applications If required, apply the metal drip cap and head installation flange to the top of the door frame. Cut both the drip cap and installation flange to match the frame width size. Apply a bead of sealant to the underside of the drip cap on both sides, along the front edge and on top where the drip cap will meet the installation flange. Place the installation flange on top of the drip cap, then screw both (the metal drip cap and installation flange) into the door frame using 1/2" self-drilling pan head screws. Begin 1-1/2" from each end, and apply screws 6" to 8" O.C. Next, cut both jamb installation flange sections to match the frame size. Apply a bead of sealant to the underside at the top and bottom and along the front edge. Attach to the door frame using 1/2" self-drilling pan head screws. Begin 1-1/2" from each end, and apply screws 6" to 8" O.C. Silicone Drip Cap Onto Top Door Frame 3

6. Continued - Option 2 - For 3-1/2" wall depth and adjustable wall depth applications If required by installation, use the adjustable metal installation flange for both jambs and head. First, cut the head and both jamb installation flange sections to match the frame size. Apply a bead of sealant to the underside of the drip cap on both sides and along the front edge. Attach the installation flange to the door frame using 1/2" self-drilling pan head screws. Begin 1-1/2" from each end, and apply screws 6" to 8" O.C. Do not apply drip cap at this time. 7. Apply Apply two 3/8" nominal beads of sealant across sill and extend 6" up each side jamb of Rough Opening. Make sure that rough opening is free of voids, holes, chipping or other conditions. 6" 8. Apply to Back Side of Installation Flange Apply a continuous 3/8" nominal bead of sealant to the interior (backside) of the installation flange over the pre-punched nail holes. Installation Flange 4

9. From Outside, Tip Door into Place Insert the door into the opening from the exterior. Place the bottom of the door into the opening and tilt the door into position. Center the door between the sides of the opening to allow for shimming. Make sure that door sill is properly embedded in the sealant. 10. Temporarily Secure Insert one galvanized nail into corner and several additional pre-punched holes in installation flange to secure door while shimming plumb, level, square and true. 11. Insert Shims Place shims 1" from each corner of door. Add additional shims at the midpoint and every 12" O.C. Adjust the shims as needed to plumb and square the door. Add shims at sill as required to make sure sill is level. 1" 12" 12" 12" 12" 12" 12" 1" 1" 12" 12" 12" 12" 12" 1" 1" 12" 12" 12" 12" 12" 12" 1" 5

12. Make Sure Door is Plumb, Level, Square and True 13. Nail into Place Fasten the door into place by driving a galvanized nail into each pre-punched hole in the installation flange. 14. Remove Shipping Blocks from Bottom of Door Panel and Tighten Installation Screws On double doors only, remove 2 strike screws at head and dispose of properly. Replace with #8 x 2-1/8" screws with matching finish. 6

15. Adjust Door Panels if Required Insert or remove shims in cup behind hinges as required to adjust panel reveals. 16. Install Hinge Screws Install (2) #8 x 2-1/2" wood screws with matching finish in each hinge. For doors that have four hinges per side, use two (2) #8 x 2-1/2" screws in the top and bottom two hinges, and one screw in each of the middle two hinges (second hole down from top of hinge). 17. Adjust Door Operate the door several times to verify proper and smooth operation. Make sure the door will latch correctly. 7

18. For 3-1/2" Wall Depth Applications Only, Install Drip Cap Apply a bead of sealant on the backside of the drip cap above the point where it will meet the installation flange and on the top of the door unit where the drip cap will meet the door unit. Nail the drip cap into the wall using roofing nails. Begin 1-1/2" from each end, and apply nails 6" to 8" O.C. Silicone This step pertains only to 3-1/2" wall depth applications. If you are working with anything other than 3-1/2" wall depth, skip to Step 19. Drip Drip Cap Cap Onto Top Top Door Door Frame Frame 19. Apply Apply a sizable amount of sealant in each corner. Apply a 3/8" nominal bead of sealant around the perimeter where the installation flange meets the door frame. 20. Apply Corner Pad Flashing Apply corner pad flashing to top corners of installation flange. 8

21. Cut and Install Side Flashing Wipe the door side installation flange and weatherresistant barrier with a clean rag for proper adhesion. Cut and apply side flashing for both sides of door. Correct length is 1/2" short of top of head flashing. Align the flashing flush against the door frame with the adhesive strip covering the entire door flange and apply. How to determine correct length of side flashing: Side flashing length = rough opening height + width of flashing, less 1/2". Using 6" flashing, this should be rough opening height + 5-1/2". 22. Cut and Install Head Flashing Wipe head flange, jamb flashing and weatherresistant barrier with a clean rag for proper adhesion. Cut a strip of flashing long enough so that the head flashing extends 1" beyond the side flashing on each side. Install head flashing by pressing firmly in place in one direction. How to determine correct length of head flashing: Head flashing length = rough opening width + twice the side flashing width + 1" overlap for each side. Using 6" flashing, this should be rough opening width + 14". 9

23. Integrate Flashing System into the Weather-Resistant Barrier Make sure that the flap of the weather-resistant barrier lays flat over the head flashing. Apply a new piece of flashing over the entire diagonal cut made in the weather-resistant barrier and press into place. 24. Apply Low Expanding Foam From interior of building, insert foam applicator nozzle approximately 1" into space between the door and the rough opening, and apply a 1" deep bed of low expanding foam. Allow foam to cure completely before applying casing. Do not overfill with low expanding foam or over pack with backer rod to avoid bowed jambs. 10

25. Insert Backer Rod - Exterior Cladding Options Insert backer rod as shown. Wood Siding Installation Flange Vinyl or Aluminum Siding Weather-resistant Barrier Head Flashing Backer Rod Installation Flange Weather-resistant Barrier Head Flashing Backer Rod Exterior Interior Exterior Interior Wood Siding Vinyl or Aluminum Siding Weather-resistant Barrier Head Flashing Backer Rod Brick Exterior Installation Flange Weather-resistant Barrier Head Flashing Backer Rod Installation Flange Wood Siding and Trim Exterior Interior Exterior Interior Brick Exterior Trim/Wood Siding 11

26. Insert Backer Rod and Around Entire Perimeter of Door Apply backer rod and sealant around entire perimeter of door. Shape sealant to provide a continuous seal. Clean off excess sealant. When applying siding or other exterior finish material, leave adequate space between the door frame and exterior finish material. See your sealant supplier for recommendations and instructions for these and other applications. 27. Prepare Interior Wood Surfaces for Finishing Fill all nail holes. Sand all interior surfaces with 180 grit sandpaper. Wipe all surfaces with tack cloth or light rag. Be sure to finish all exposed interior wood surfaces. 28. Finishing Options: Applying Paint- Apply one coat of primer and allow to dry. Apply two coats of paint, lapping 1/16" onto glass to ensure complete coverage. When dry, clean door glass. Applying Natural Finish - Apply clear polyurethane top coat. When dry, lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper. Wipe with tack cloth. Apply second coat of polyurethane and lap 1/16 onto glass to ensure complete coverage. Apply third coat, if desired, after sanding and wiping surfaces. When dry, clean door glass. 12

29. Install the Handle Set Follow instructions included with the handle hardware. Exterior Interior See the Eagle Owner s Manual for care and maintenance information. Methods and procedures for installation of siding and other cladding materials, trim, moldings and other finish materials around window openings are not specified in these instructions. Such materials should be installed in conformity with the manufacturer s specifications and/or industry standards for such materials. If masonry cladding is used, the soldier course of masonry must be one-half inch away from the bottom of the sill on all windows. Because all construction must anticipate some water infiltration, it is important that the wall system be designed and constructed to properly manage moisture. Eagle Window & Door is not responsible for claims or damages caused by unanticipated water infiltration, deficiencies in building design, construction and maintenance, failure to install Eagle products in accordance with these instructions, or the use of Eagle products in systems which do not allow for proper management of moisture within the wall system. The determination of the suitability of all building components, including the use of Eagle products, as well as the design and installation of flashing and sealing systems, are the responsibility of you, your architect, or a construction professional. Moisture problems, including unacceptable water infiltration, have been associated with barrier systems such as EIFS (also known as synthetic stucco). Eagle products should not be used in barrier EIFS systems unless Eagle s current, recommended installation procedures for installation of windows and doors into EIFS are used. Any other use of Eagle products with barrier EIFS systems will void the warranty. Contact your sealant supplier to choose a sealant that is compatible with, and that will adhere adequately to, all building materials used in the window area. Important: Perimeter sealant must be Grade NS Class 24 per ASTM C920 and compatible with the window/door product, installation flange and the finished exterior of the building. Use of improper sealant could result in sealant failure, resulting in air and water infiltration. Eagle makes no warranty, expressed or implied, that the methods and procedures described in these instructions are suitable for any particular purpose or installation. These instructions do not add to or modify the terms, conditions or limitations of Eagle s manufacturer s warranty. A drip cap is required on all windows and doors. Failure to utilize and incorporate a drip cap could void the Eagle Window & Door warranty. Refer to the Eagle warranty for additional information. These installation procedures have been tested by an independent laboratory under ideal installation conditions using the ANSI/AAMA/ NWWDA 101/I.S. 2-97 test. 13
