2 Design Inspiration Checklist Can a garment be knit on the machine? Use this checklist to evaluate a hand knitting pattern (or a ready-made sweater). Attach a photo to create an inspiration notebook for future project ideas. Construction Is the garment knit flat or circular? Can seams be added? Are there enough needles? Stitch Pattern Can the main stitch pattern be reproduced on the machine? Automatic patterning or hand manipulation? Is the colorwork pattern appropriate? How many colors per row? Yarn Can the yarn be used on a knitting machine? Can the yarn be used on MY machine? Gauge Can you match the pattern gauge? If not, how much charting would be involved? Hand Manipulation Are bands, collars, hems or trims knit in garter stitch, moss stitch, seed stitch, etc? Is it possible to knit the collars, bands, hems and trims by hand? Is there ribbing? Are there hand manipulated embellishments, motifs, bands, etc? Home Study Course Using Hand Knitting Patterns for

3 Hand Knit Terms Translated to MK This chart is a companion to the video Hand Knit Terms Translated to that includes demonstrations and examples of all the techniques. This video is part of a Home Study Course, Using Hand Knitting Patterns For. Hand knitting patterns have their own language and abbreviations. Whether you are working on 2 needles or 200 needles, the basics are the same. Casting on, binding off, decreasing, increasing all are the same. The trick is to translate the abbreviations used and the techniques described in a hand knitting pattern. Included below are some of the most commonly used terms and the associated machine knitting technique The goal is for you to be "multi-lingual" and be able to use both styles of knitting instruction. Hand Knitting Increase / Decrease Evenly Knit 2 together (k2tog, skp, psso, etc) Knit 3 together (k3tog, center double decrease) Make 1 (m1) Place Marker (pm) Provisional Cast On Reverse Stockinette Remove all stitches from the machine on waste yarn or garter bar. Increase or decrease as the stitches are returned to the needles. Transfer one stitch and place it on a neighboring needle, transfer stitches to fill the emptied needle or take it out of work. Transfer stitches to neighboring needles, emptying 2 needles. Transfer stitches to fill the empty needles. Increase by hanging the heel of the stitch from the row below on an emptied needle. Pick up the strand between stitches from the row below, twist and hang on the emptied needle. Hang a loop of yarn on the selected needle and knit the yarn with the next row. Run a strand of contrasting yarn between the column of stitches to indicate a selected stitch. Waste Yarn and Ravel Cord or Chain Cast On. Use the side facing you as the work hangs on the machine as the public (right) side of your garment. Home Study Course Using Hand Knitting Patterns for

4 Hand Knitting Stitch Holder Yarn Over (yo, yfwd, yon) Hand Manipulation Charts 2/2 LC(left cable cross) 2/2 RC (right cable cross) Remove the knitting from the machine with waste yarn or remove stitches from the machine on hand knitting needles (circular needles work best) When an emptied needle is knitted on the next row, the yarn loops over the needle to create an eyelet. This can be used as an increase, adjoining stitches need to be transferred to created the emptied needle Hand knitting charts need to be reversed if you are using the knit side (side away from you on the machine) as the public (right) side. 2//2 Right Cable Cross The knit stitches (right side) appear to be leaning left, but will be right leaning when viewed when the work is off the machine Home Study Course Using Hand Knitting Patterns for

5 Pattern Conversion Practice Garment Body Multiply length instructions by the row gauge (per inch) Use the information given to calculate the rows to knit this pattern piece on the machine.
