TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION TRANSFER THROUGH TRANSNATIONAL NETWORKING

WHAT IS NUCLEI? NUCLEI stands for "Network of Technology Transfer Nodes for Enhanced Open Innovation in the Central European Advanced Manufacturing and Processing Industry". The European Union s most important automation and mechatronic industries are located in Central European regions. While their business dimension is intercontinental, their innovation-related services often remain local, thus slowing down the transfer of research and development results into the industry. As a result, tech-transfer is an expensive process that often duplicates efforts and does not respond to time-to-market requirements. The challenge is to improve innovation-related services to accelerate the transposition of key enabling technologies (KET) from EU-funded research and Central European labs into new end-user components and applications for the advanced manufacturing industries. THE NUCLEI FAMILY Through our transnational cooperation with a broad range of key stakeholders we will create sustainable linkages among innovation actors. The NUCLEI family is taking care of the networking aspect for innovation and technology transfer between all NUCLEI target groups. Our family consists of 2 universities, 2 companies, 2 non-profit organisations, 3 clusters and 1 institution: CRIT S.R.L. (Italy) CRIT is a private technology broker specialised in strategic management of innovation processes and the Lead Partner of the NUCLEI project. ITQ GMBH (Germany) ITQ is an innovative SME specialised in supporting machine and plant construction during all stages of development. ITQ is the Communication Leader of the NUCLEI project. T2I TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND INNOVATION S.C.A R.L. (Italy) t2i is a non-profit innovation consultancy fostering technology transfer networks. t2i is promoted by Chambers of Commerce Industry Handicraft and Agriculture in Veneto. ASTER S. CONS. P. A. (Italy) ASTER is the consortium for innovation and technology transfer among the Emilia-Romagna Regional Government and regional education, research and business actors.

BUSINESS UPPER AUSTRIA - OÖ WIRTSCHAFTSAGENTUR GMBH (Austria) The Mechatronics Cluster (BIZ-UP), a department of Business Upper Austria, is a cross-industry network to strengthen innovation and international competitiveness of enterprises in machinery. CLUSTER MECHATRONICS & AUTOMATION MANAGEMENT GGMBH (Germany) CMAB (Cluster Mechatronics & Automation) is a private entity association of R&D institutes, universities and enterprises in mechatronics and automation mainly located in Bavaria. WROCLAW UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (Poland) The Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (PWR) cooperates with or is a member of 11 clusters. The main business of PWR is academic research and higher education. CZECH TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE (Czech Republic) RCMT (Czech Technical University) as the main research base for manufacturing technology and national innovation coordinating center fosters the direct cooperation in innovations between companies and R&D sector. STEINBEIS INNOVATION GGMBH (Germany) The Steinbeis Innovation ggmbh (SIG) is a non profit body, part of the Steinbeis Foundation for Economic Promotion, and has been specialist in technology transfer for more than 25 years. CLUSTER AT+R Z.P.O. (Slovakia) Cluster AT+R is specialised on providing R&D, training, manufacturing and supply capacities for automation and robotics technologies to improve the local branch profiling.

WHAT WE DO Establishing a transnational innovation management model in Central European regions Our project is funded by the Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE Programme that encourages cooperation on shared challenges in Central Europe. Therefore, 10 project partners led by the Italian CRIT are working together with the aim of changing the current obsolete innovation management model from a local-based technology scouting approach to a transnational pool of knowledge that supports advanced manufacturing innovation across regional borders. This will increase economic interdependencies among seven regions and encourage more effective transnational value chains in automotive, electrical industry, IT sector, robotic and mechanic automation and others. Such joint knowledge sourcing approach will help the 7 NUCLEI industrial clusters and its end-beneficiaries (corporations, SMEs, R&D performers) generate new consortia/business deals for executing bold technological, product and market projects. The creation of a broad and collaborative environment, initially tested by 100 companies from the 7 NUCLEI regions, is expected to: Increase linkages with innovators beyond regional borders of the project regions Accelerate the time-to-market of R&D concepts from EU-funded research and Central European labs to companies Increase R&D expenditure and patent applications of mid-term turnover Create thematic focus groups as regional managers Collaborate on transnational technology transfer
