The Great Flood Genesis 5:1 9:17 February 12, 2012 ON OUR PLATE TODAY The children will learn: GAME Play Let s Make a Deal! If you re not familiar with how this old TV game show is played, here s a synopsis. In the simplest format, a trader was given a prize of medium value (such as a television set), and the host offered them the opportunity to trade for another prize. However, the offered prize was unknown. It might be concealed on the stage behind one of three curtains or behind large panels on stage, or within smaller boxes brought out to the audience. The initial prize given to the trader might also be concealed, such as in a box, wallet or purse, or the trader might be initially given a box or curtain. Prizes could be a legitimate prize, cash, or a Zonk. Zonks were unwanted joke prizes. Kids love playing this game. You really could go all out and announce ahead of time that you ll be playing Let s Make a Deal and that kids should come dressed as animals. Animal costumes fit the theme of the day, and people on the show often wore crazy costumes in hopes of being chosen. Copyright 2010 KidzMatter Ministries Inc. BIBLE ACCOUNT Teach the kids a simple response before you start telling the story. One door, one way. More doors? No way, Jose! Tell the story as follows. The kids will repeat the phrase when instructed. Kids: One door, one way. More doors? No way, Jose! Kids: One door, one way. More doors? No way, Jose! Kids: One door, one way. More doors? No way, Jose! - 2 www.kidzmatter.com
Kids: One door, one way. More doors? No way, Jose! GAME Divide the kids into teams. Each team will have 2 tongue depressors and a bowl of animal cookies. At the far end of the room should be an empty bowl for each team. This bowl is the ark. The first person on each team will hold the end of a tongue depressor in each hand. Another team member will choose two like animal cookies from the bowl a pair to place on the other end of each tongue depressor. At the signal, each player will balance their pair of animal cookies on their tongue depressors and carry them to their team s ark. Once the animals have been deposited in the ark, the player will run back to their team with the tongue depressors. The first player to return to his team will get the chance to answer a question about today s story. ACTIVITY Give each kid a pencil and an index card. On the card they should write a question that they would ask Noah if they had the chance to meet him. You can handle these questions in two different ways. Choose which way works best for your group. Option 1: Dress an adult to be Noah. Your Noah character will come in the room and the leader can read through the cards to ask questions that the leader feels are good ones for Noah to answer. Option 2: Put all the completed index cards in a container. The kids will then draw out a different card, read the question, and give the answer they think Noah would give. 3 www.kidzmatter.com
OBJECT LESSON Gather three large beach towels and attach a giant sign on each towel. One towel should say Sin - People. One towel will say Jesus - Door. And the third towel will say, God Ark. Lay down the beach towel that says Sin - People and the one that says God Ark. Place them parallel to one another on the floor with a gap between the two. Place the Jesus - Door towel as a bridge between the two. ACTIVITY Beforehand put a rope really taut between 2 points (about 5-feet off the ground). Then, attach some sheets from the rope with clothespins. Choose a group to sit on their bottoms on both sides of the sheet. The number of kids you have playing depends on the width of sheets you were able to drape. The kids will play blind volleyball by batting a beach ball back and forth across the sheeting drape. They shouldn t be able to see the other team as they attempt to play volleyball. MESSAGE I am THE way and THE truth and THE life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 Show a package of generic medicine. 4 www.kidzmatter.com
Show the name brand medicine. I am the door. If anyone enters through me, He will be saved. John 10:9 - (assemble puzzle beforehand minus one piece) Take a mismatched piece from another puzzle and try to make it fit into the hole. Put the correct piece in the puzzle that fits. To him who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:8 Select a kid who has one to share and excitedly ask them to join you. Ask them to begin the joke. When they say knock-knock you don t respond. Just stand there and smile at them, after they ve tried a couple of times to get you to respond. - ACTIVITY VIDEO Download the following video called The Bridge, submitted by NNYMOhio. PRAYER This will take a little extra effort, but can also be a great way to include someone with carpentry skills in children s ministry. (I ve had these made before, so I know it s not that difficult for someone who knows what they re doing.) What you want is a self-standing door that will open and shut. Use an old discarded door from someone s basement and build a frame around it that will enable it to stand. As you say this, go to the self-standing door. Open the door and take a step across the threshold. - You may also want to affirm those who have made this decision in the past and ask them to come walk through the door as a statement of continued faithfulness to their new life and gratitude for Jesus being their door to a new relationship with God. Enjoy leading the kids in a time of prayer depending on what response you have. If there are kids who come to the door, then make sure you take the time to pray with them individually for the huge decision they are making. If no one responds, then your prayer should be one of thanksgiving that Jesus is our door and is always there, ready to answer when we knock. No matter what the response, thank God for those who have already made this commitment and are living a new life. BLESSING 6 www.kidzmatter.com
E X T RA AC T IVIT IES TAKE HOME Give each of the kids a Design Your Own Noah s Ark Sticker Scenes from Oriental Trading (Item #IN- 57/6308, 12/$5.00). These are 8.5 x 11 sheets and the pieces are repositionable for fun over and over. Send these projects home with kids. Instruct them to highlight the door of the ark with a marker when they put their scenes together. CRAFT The best thing would be to have different colors of door hangers cut out of fun foam and ready for the kids. If not, make some templates of the door hanger from the back of the lesson out of poster board. Provide a variety of colors of fun foam to the kids. They will draw around the template and then cut out their door hanger. The kids will decorate their door hangers to say something about Jesus being the only door to God and His heaven. (Most hobby stores also have fun foam self-adhesive letters and shapes, including animals, if you d like to splurge.) They can use flat-backed rhinestones, sequins, buttons, and other miscellaneous craft supplies to enhance their door hangers. A thick craft glue works best with fun foam; regular white glue tends to cause the pieces to slide around. Encourage the kids to hang their door hangers on their bedroom door to remind themselves and their family members that Jesus is our rescuer and the door to our salvation. SCRIPTURE MEMORY Psalm 18:2-3 The kids will be in groups of 5-8. You will need 2 copies of the animal cards from the end of the lesson for each group. Cut these apart and put them in a sack. At the signal, one person from each group will reach into the sack and pull out 2 cards. Any groups that pull out a pair will say the scripture passage together and then set the pair of animal cards aside. Because the animals went on the ark two-by-two, these animals have gotten on the ark. Other groups that did not pull out a match will put their cards back in their sack. A new person in each group will draw for the second round. Play as long as you like, or until one group pairs up all their animals, have them all on the ark, and their sack is empty. 7 www.kidzmatter.com
MUSIC We have provided two songs by Yancy, a wonderful contemporary musician who creates music especially for elementary and preteens. The songs are You Alone and God is With Us. For more of Yancy s music, go to yancynotnancy.com. SNACK You will need some loaf-pan pound cakes. Slice these in thin slices lengthwise. You ll probably get 5 or 6 slices out of one pound cake. Put each slice on a plate. The kids should be in groups of 4 and each group will get one of these slices of cake. You ll also need to mix one can of light chocolate icing with one can of white icing (to make a light brown color). Give each group a small container of the light brown icing, some craft sticks for applying the icing, a graham cracker and small candies. As the kids are working, make conversation with individual groups by asking these questions. 8 www.kidzmatter.com
