Introduction The 3M Far End Device II (FED II) 1342 is an accessory device to the 3M Dynatel Subscriber Loop Analyzer 965DSP. When used with the 965DSP, the FED II helps improve work efficiency by automatically providing some necessary functions at the far-end of the pair under test during pair qualification testing. The 965DSP tester controls the FED II using DTMF signaling. The FED II supports the following functions for the 965DSP Auto Test feature: Loop Resistance (shorts Tip to Ring) Resistive Balance (shorts Tip-Ring to Ground) Single Tone & Sweep Loss (sends loss tone) Longitudinal Balance testing with IEEE termination (Std. 455-1985) Optional second pair connection Central Office isolate Note: When the 1342 FED II is used in conjunction with a 965DSP with version 6.00.2 or earlier software, it will support figure 1 hookup only (same as the original FED). When used in conjunction with a 965DSP with version 6.00.3 or later software, it will support all 3 hookup configurations. The FED II is contained in a small plastic case with an on/off pushbutton and LED power/battery indicator. It is powered by a 9-volt alkaline battery (supplied). The test lead is terminated with an RJ-45 on one end and 7 color-coded heavy-duty alligator clips on the other. The RJ-45 connector plugs into the top of the FED II case.

Power-up The 3M Far End Device II can be turned on manually (by the user) or remotely (by the 3M Dynatel Tester 965DSP). The FED II is powered up manually and placed in an idle state by pressing the on/off push button once. If the push button is pressed twice rapidly in succession, the unit is powered-up and begins sending an identification (ID) tone on pair 1 (bluebanded test leads). The ID tone, when applied to the pair under test, can be used to identify the pair at the other end of the cable. Pressing the push button once more turns the unit off. If the FED II is powered up in the ID tone mode, it can also be used to measure continuity. The FED II will produce a continuous tone if the resistance between the black and red test clip is 800 ohms or less. This feature can be used to positively identify a pair if the tip and ring at the other end has been shorted together. The FED II is powered up remotely by the 965DSP at the beginning of the Auto test sequence. The LED will begin to flash at a rate of about four times per second. If the unit detects that the battery is weak, the LED will flash once per second. The battery should be replaced as soon as possible when this occurs.

Connecting the 3M Far End Device II Once the test pair(s) has been located, the FED II can be connected to the pair(s) at the initial work point. Normally this pair(s) would be opened at the pedestal or splice point. The FED II is connected to the test pair(s) in the direction of the tests as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The FED II can also be used on an active pair as shown in Figure 3. In Figure 3 the FED II is placed in series between the 965DSP test set and the CO on an active pair. The black clip is Tip (A), the red clip is Ring (B). The yellow-banded leads are optional. Connected to the CO side of a working pair (Fig. 3) the FED II will isolate this circuit towards the CO. 3. Pair two is marked with red bands. The black clip is Tip (A), the red clip is Ring (B). The redbanded leads connect to the optional secondary test pair (Fig. 2).

4. Green lead always connects to shield and ground or to a reference conductor. The 3M Far End Device II testing between the 3M Dynatel Tester 965DSP and the FED II on a dead pair. After the testing is completed, the FED II will re-activate pair until the FED II is removed from the circuit. Note: Install the FED II per figure 1, 2 or 3 and the 965DSP will activate the FED II as required. Installing/Replacing the Battery Turn the unit over so that it is facing down. Loosen the screw at the top-center of the battery cover (beneath the rear label) using a small phillips screwdriver. Remove the cover by lifting the part closest to the retaining screw (cover is hinged at the bottom). Remove the battery from the compartment. Unsnap the clip from the 9V battery and discard per applicable regulations. Press the clip onto the contacts of the new battery, making sure that the contacts mate properly. Place the battery back in the compartment as shown on the rear label. Insert the two tabs of the battery cover into the lower part of the opening being careful not to force it. Press the cover into place and tighten the retaining screw.

Field Note 33 AUTO and Manual Testing with the 3M Dynatel Test Set 965 DSP and 3M Far End Device II (FED II) The 3M Far End Device (FED) is like having a helper at the far end of the pair while you are performing AUTO Tests with the 965DSP tester, whether you are qualifying pairs for new service installations or identifying service problems on working lines. The FED will send pair identification tone, send the appropriate transmission tones for the type of service being qualified, provide the proper terminations for noise testing and will not interfere with open ended tests. The FED II has the same applications as the original FED plus additional functionality. The FED II allows two pair testing (primary pair 1 and secondary pair 2) for vacant pair tests. It may be installed on a working pair at the Central Office MDF, CDO MDF, at a cross connect box or at a subscriber NID in line with the working pair. It does not interfere with service in its pass through mode when dormant and it does not matter if the service is POTS or wideband. When the FED is activated with the 965DSP AUTO Test, it will automatically disconnect the CO or subscriber side of the circuit making the pair vacant for further testing. After testing as a vacant pair the 965DSP will turn off the FED putting the pair back into service automatically.

3M Far End Device (FED II) Standard Applications The FED II, when used with the 3M Dynatel Test Set 965DSP (Ver. 6.005 or higher software), will qualify: POTS Inactive test POTS Inactive and Active tests on working service Wideband tests on active or inactive service Getting Started Gather as much information about the cable and pairs as possible (cable and pair number/s, wire gauge, general layout of the cable network, approximate length of the pair, cross box and workout terminal location and the type of service to be tested). It s always a good idea to pretest the pairs with the 965DSP tester Inactive pair AUTO test before hooking up the FED. All commands for the FED are made on the pair under test. If the pair has an open, the FED can t hear the commands. Hookups There are four color-coded sets of test leads on the FED II: Green Blue banded - connects to ground - connects to pair 1 (primary test pair) Optional Red banded - connects to pair 2 (secondary test pair) Yellow banded - connects to the CO or subscriber side of the working service.

Each pair of test leads has a black and red set of test clips. The BLACK always connects to TIP and RED connects to RING. There are two types of hookups, Single pair or Two pair. The CO disconnect option is normally used on working services. The choice of hookups depends on the application the 3M Far End Device II will be used for. See the following chart. FED Cord Selection Chart Test Application Green Clip Gnd Blue Banded Pair 1 (Primary Pair) Red Banded Pair 2 (Second Pair) Yellow Banded CO or Subscriber Side Single vacant pair POTS or x x WB testing Single working pair POTS x x x or WB 2 vacant pait POTS or WB x x x testing 2 pair testing with primary pair working POTS or WB x x x x FED FED II 10

How It Works After the 3M Far End Device has been placed on a pair and the 3M Dynatel Test Set 965DSP hooked up at the other end, the 965DSP AUTO test function will automatically command the FED to wake up and program the FED for the appropriate INACTIVE or WIDEBAND test routines. When the test is finished, and the 965DSP has exited the AUTO test program, the 965DSP will turn the FED off automatically. Commonly used DTMF Manual FED Commands The Far End Device can be used manually for additional applications. It can be controlled using the dial pad of the 965DSP. The FED will have to be turned on remotely and a security password must be used before entering DTMF application commands. When you are finished testing the FED, it should be turned off to conserve its battery. NOTE: The most frequently used DTMF command strings may be programmed, stored and used in the 965DSP dial test set function. 11

3M Far End Device Applications with the 3M Dynatel Test Set 965DSP When the FED has been manually turned on with a double keystroke, pair ID tone is being transmitted. You will first need to turn the tone off with the 965DSP by holding down any DTMF key for more than 5 seconds. Application Turn ON the FED Application command string Send the FED 577Hz ID tone for more than 5 seconds command string Security Pass Word is 123456 A hiccup will be heard on the 965DSP speaker confirming acceptance of the password. Application command string Turn OFF the FED 9# Don t forget to turn it off when finished with the testing. Application command string Set the temporary extended time (N = time in seconds) from 0 to 9999. 7N# 12

Without the temporary time set, the default time for all the applications will always be 10 seconds. Enter the time extension followed by the function command. There can be no more than a 1 second pause between key presses when using the 3M Dynatel Test Set 965DSP keypad entering DTMF commands. If the 1 second elapses, you must start the command over. HOOKUPS The 3M Far End Device hookup will be Black to TIP, Red to RING and Green to Ground for all applications except Resistance Fault Locating (RFL). After the FED has been turned on and the DTMF commands have been sent for your application, back out of the dialing function and use the appropriate test feature of the 965DSP tester to measure.
