Instructions 1. Start at the top of the Family Group Worksheet. Fill in the Date Created, Created by, and Chart 2. Next you need to fill in the phrase Person in this chart is Person in Chart if it applies. What does that mean? Well, let s say that Child #5 on this chart is the father on the chart you created yesterday. The person numbering system is up to you. If sequential is your thing i.e. Father is Person 1, then Child #5 is Person 7 on this chart. So your line would look like this: Person 7 on this chart is Person 1on Chart 1 if yesterday s Chart was 1. If you have a more creative numbering system, then Child #5 on this chart is whatever number the father was on the other chart. The point being that a single person may be on different charts and you need to tell yourself that so you don t forget later. 3. Okay that was confusing Now, the fields on this worksheet. You can either number each worksheet sequentially starting with 1 or whatever works for you. Some people start numbering their family tree with themselves being 1 and every person they add gets the next number. There are as many ways to number entries as there are family trees. Pick one and stick to it. Consistency is important here. 4. Do not forget to circle either M or F to indicate the sex of the child. What may seem obvious now, may not be obvious when you come back to this chart next month or next year! 5. Next fill in the name. At the end of the line is a. Your sources should be listed on the Sources pages included here. Each one gets a number. Place the number for the source where you found the name in the field at the end of the line. This also applies to the other fields for each person. 6. If the family you are documenting in the family group worksheet has more than 13 children, make a copy of the second page and renumber the children starting at 14. Believe it or not, there are couples who have had more than 13 children. 7. The source pages for the family group worksheet have a Page of in the top left corner. The first sheet you use is page 1. When you are done, go back and put the last page number in the of part. What I mean is, if you have 5 pages of sources, you number the pages sequential from 1 to 5. Then go back and put 5 in the second blank for the total number of source pages for this worksheet. So page 1 would read Page 1 of 5. 8. The source citation pages are very generic. There are fields for the most common things to document about your source. The Other field is to include anything specific for the source you are using. If you need help knowing what you need to document for each source, see http://www.family-tree-waypoint.com/citing-sources.html.
