Blogging on the MRes: Getting started Blogging on the Master of Research: Education and Society (MRes) programme Programme blog Via the MMU ESRI MRES blog, the programme team will regularly reflect on key themes from taught sessions. Please make a point of checking it regularly and comment on discussions as they evolve. http://mresesri.wordpress.com/ ######## 1 ######## 2 3 ######## 5 4 6 ######## 1. Visit the blog 2. Browse the blog pages to find out about the programme 3. Read the blog posts from the programme team 4. Feel free to leave a comment on any posts 5. Follow the blog if you wish to receive email updates 6. Browse the latest tweets and if you wish follow @ESRIMRes

Student blogs We encourage and expect that you will use a reflective research blog to aid your learning: What you might call an online research journal or diary. The blog will provide a space for you to reflect on your research journey: the reading you re undertaking; new ideas and theoretical concepts you re encountering; your responses to other researchers stories from the field ; the relationships you re building with fellow students or the broader research community; and the seminars and reading groups you attend outside the sessions and course. You can be creative in how you use the blog. There is no prescription, but we will provide tasks each week where we will ask you to write on your blog, and read and comment on each other s. Start blogging today Create your blog 1. Go to http://wordpress.com/ and click on the Get Started button. Note: if you already have a WordPress account and would like to create your blog under the same username that is fine. Just sign in and go to My Blogs to create another blog. If you already have a blog using WordPress (or other blogging tool) and prefer not to create duplicate blogs that is also fine. All you need to do is ensure it is clear to the programme team and your MRes peers where you are blogging, and provide appropriate read/comment access. 2. Fill in the details on the web form including: E-mail Address Username Password Blog Address Note: when choosing a username and blog address, consider continued use of your blog after the MRes for lifelong learning and reflection. 3. Click on the Create Blog button. Note: you will need to activate your account by clicking a link sent to your email address.

Access your blog Dashboard 4. Under your blog title, click Blog Admin to access your Dashboard area. Note: the dashboard area is where you go to edit your blog whether you are adding something new, amending something existing, or changing settings such as privacy and appearance. When signed in, you can switch between viewing the dashboard and your live blog via your blog title top left. Check your privacy settings 5. Click Settings and Reading to check/edit your Site Visibility settings. Note: The first two settings Allow search engines to index this site and Discourage search engines from indexing this site both enable open access, however the latter setting means that your blog will only be known to those who have the blog address. (recommended) If you would like to ensure absolute privacy, choose the setting I would like my site to be private, visible only to users I choose. 6. If you make any changes click the Save Changes button. 7. You may also like to check through some of the other options in Settings, such as the Discussion options to manage comments on your blog.

Share your blog (if private) 8. Click Users and click the Invite New button. 9. Type the Username or Email Address of whom you wish to share your blog. Select a Role, type a message, and click the Send Invitation button. Note: The Viewer role will enable others to view your private blog (and add comments, if you have enabled them). Create your first page 10. Click Pages and Add New to create your first page. The editing is similar to word processing a document, with familiar formatting tools. Note: Pages are static, where content does not often change. An example may be an About me page. 11. Type in a title, and write your first page, then click on the Publish button. 12. Click on View page to go to the live blog page. Note: Remember, you can switch between viewing the dashboard and your live blog via your blog title top left.

Create your first post 13. Click Posts and Add New to create your first blog post. The editing is similar to word processing a document, with familiar formatting tools. Note: Posts are chronological entries, like a diary or journal. You would probably create a post for each reflection. The newest posts appear at the top. 14. Add Categories and Tags to your post. Note: Categories provide structure to a blog making filtering easier. For the MRes you may like to categorise your reflections by having a category for each unit. Tags provide the reader with an idea of topic areas. 15. Click on the Publish button. Change your blog appearance 16. Click Appearance and Themes to change the look and feel of your blog. Note: Many of the blog themes provided by Wordpress are free. You can Live Preview any of the themes of your blog before clicking Activate to go live. You can change the theme of your blog at any point.
