The Visual Arts - The Bridge to the Developing Future A Shared Vision The Visual Arts in the Dover School System are the bridge to developing a sense of personal uniqueness in each student. By integrating the visual arts into the process of continued learning, we expand each individual s creativity, critical thinking skills, and problem solving abilities; while valuing diversity and individual learning styles. We are committed to opening the path of self-discovery and encouraging a sense of community for all learners by nurturing risk taking, exercising imagination, and preparing them for a world of possibilities. 3
Key Principles & Explanation of Terms Integration Art has the ability to interface successfully with all curriculum areas and domains. Arts strategies and processes provide opportunities to include multicultural perspectives in curriculum, and to link a school with the larger community. Creativity Creative intelligence is the essence of each child. Art processes give each student the opportunity to learn what their own creativity encompasses. Through exploring art media they will develop strategies for creative thinking and problem solving. Critical Thinking Critical thinking allows children to analyze problems from a different perspective. When thinking critically, students take control of their own learning, helping them successfully solve problems throughout life. Students who study art are more familiar with the diverse methods of facing problems, which help them reach individually satisfying and better-rounded solutions. Problem Solving When students are provided opportunities to problem solve in a variety of ways they develop strategies and systems which work in solving the myriad of problems they encounter in all aspects of life. Valuing Diversity When students learn to honor diversity value multiple perspectives and positions. independent thinkers who form more open and autonomous decisions. They become Discovery Discovery is an important part of every learning experience. Art processes give students the opportunity to continually explore new avenues of learning. This process helps generate new ideas and new ways of thinking. The joy of discovery is an integral part of the artistic process and experience. Community Art can help connect the individual with the community and gives the community an opportunity to support educational experiences. Communication, understanding, and support are few of the many benefits that occur with collaboration between a community and an educational arts program. Risk Taking The arts nurture risk taking in a non-threatening environment. The processes explored in art classes encourage students to try many new ideas so that they do not have to be fearful of making mistakes. They can make betterinformed decisions after trying different solutions, thereby honing their decision-making skills through taking risks. Exercising Imagination The processes inherent in a well-designed art program foster imaginative thinking. Exercising imagination helps students stimulate creativity and generate solutions. Coupled with critical thinking, imagination takes problem solving to a higher level, producing more innovative solutions. 4
