How to Use This Book If you teach alone: 1. Prepare pages from The Big Book of Read-Aloud Stories #2 by making a double-sided photocopy for each child in your class from the book or CD-Rom. Provide crayons or markers for children to use in coloring the pages. Plan ahead for those pages that require a few extra materials (tape, construction paper, etc.). 2. Use the pages at a variety of times when children arrive early, when children finish other activities ahead of time or when children need a quiet change of pace. You may also occasionally substitute the sheets for another activity suggested in your curriculum or offer them in addition to the suggested activities. Have extra photocopies on hand during holiday times, so there are enough for visitors. 3. Read the story and use the conversation suggestions in Let s Talk About the Story as children color. If you are unable to read the story aloud and ask the questions, label each page with the child s name to send home. Encourage parents to read and discuss the story at home. If you teach with one or more other teachers: Plan a time in your session schedule when pages from The Big Book of Read-Aloud Stories #2 may be used (see number 2 above). Assign one teacher to prepare and lead the activity. He or she may read the story on the sheet as children color. Help children apply the Bible truth to their lives by using the conversation suggestions in Let s Talk About the Story on the back of each sheet. If you are the director or coordinator: Use pages from The Big Book of Read-Aloud Stories #2 to supplement your regular children s programs. 1. Distribute sheets for children to complete during transition times between children s programs. 2. Attach each page to a clipboard. Distribute clipboards and small boxes of crayons to children who come to an adult service. 3. Use the pages during meeting times when child care is not available or when teachers are unexpectedly absent. 4. At a family camp or event, lead families to complete one or more pages as part of the event activities. 5. Use the pages as part of Sunday evening or weekday early childhood programs. 6. Anna decided, I m not going to sleep. I m going to stay awake all night! And Anna did stay awake for a long time. She thought about what she would do tomorrow. Uncle Ben had promised to take Anna and Joshua to the park. Uncle Ben said they could take a picnic lunch. Anna was awake for a long time. But then she couldn t stay awake any longer and she fell asleep. God made the daytime and the nighttime. He made the whole world! The Bible says, God made the world and everything in it. Repeat Bible verse with children. We re thankful God made the world. Let s pray and thank Him now! Pray briefly. Mom smiled. She said, Let s pray to God. After Anna talked to God, Mom prayed, Thank You, God, for this good day. Thank You for the quiet night. In Jesus name, amen. Why didn t Anna want to go to bed? Where was Anna going with Joshua and Uncle Ben? What did Anna have to do to get ready? Why did God make nighttime? Daytime? What do you like to do in the daytime? But I m already this many! Anna said. She held up four fingers. Let s Talk About the Story Someday you ll be older. Then you may stay up later, Mom explained. But this is your bedtime now. I wish I could stay up late, Anna said. Mom and Anna said the little poem over and over as Anna hurried to get ready to go to the park. Finally, she and Joshua jumped into Uncle Ben s car. Anna decided she would NOT stay up late anymore. She didn t like to hurry! Mom smiled. She helped Anna put away her dolls. I like daytime, too, Mom said. But we get tired. I m glad God gives us nighttime when we can rest. Mom tucked Anna into bed. I can say it, too, Anna laughed. Just listen. That s how we have a happy day. I don t want to go to bed! Anna said. I don t like nighttime. I wish it was always daytime, so I could play! At night we sleep; next day we play. Mom came into the living room where Anna was playing. Anna, it s bedtime. Mom taught Anna a rhyme: Anna s Bedtime Anna HATED to hurry, but she knew Uncle Ben was right, so she ran back to her room. Mom helped Anna get dressed as quickly as she could. 3. But who made your eyes and hands and mind? God, said Mia. But I made this elephant! Who made the clay? asked Mom. Mia laughed. NO! That would be YUCKY! God made many kinds of animals. He made all things! The Bible says, God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Repeat Bible verse with children. Let s thank God for all the good things He made. Pray briefly. It s not made of elephant muscles and bones, is it? Mom asked. Clay, answered Mia. That s true. You made it. But what did you make it from? asked Mom. Why couldn t Mia make a live elephant? Where did Mia see a real elephant? What are some of the things the live elephant did? Could Mia s elephant do those things? Why not? But GOD didn t make this elephant, Mia said. I did! That s a fine elephant, Mom said. But is it alive? I thought only God could make LIVING things, she said. Let s Talk About the Story A few minutes later Mia took her clay elephant over to her mom. Look! It s a real live elephant! Mia said. You re right! said Mom. Maybe we can go see the baby elephant on Saturday. That s right, said the teacher. Only God can make living things, like elephants and boys and girls. Wow! That baby elephant is BIG! said Mia. Because it s not alive, said Mia. Only God can make things that are alive! Mom smiled. Did you know, she asked, that a baby elephant was born at the zoo? Mom showed Mia the newspaper. Here is a picture of it. Why can t your elephant do those things? asked Mia s teacher. Mia was playing with clay. She said to her mom, I like this clay. I m making an elephant! Mia took her clay elephant to kindergarten on Monday. She showed it to the other children. Mia said, This isn t a real elephant. It can t squeal. It can t give itself a bath. Mia s Elephant After Mom and Mia looked at all the other animals, they ate lunch. Then it was time to go home. 3. Daniel said, I walked on that high wall Daniel jumped. His grandpa caught Daniel and hugged him. Don t walk on high walls if I m not here to catch you! he said. Daniel got to the end of the wall. He said, Catch me, Grandpa! Grandpa s here to watch him walk and catch him if he falls! Daniel walks on walls; even big, high walls; Grandpa sang his song: Grandpa sang. And so did Daniel! Daniel was thankful his grandpa was there! God made many things. Best of all, He made you and me and people who help us! The Bible says, Pray always and be thankful. Repeat Bible verse with children. Let s be thankful. We ll thank God for making each one of us. Pray briefly. Daniel walked very carefully, looking at the end of the wall, not at his feet. Grandpa kept his hand beside Daniel, just in case. One day Daniel and Grandpa were walking. They came to a HIGH wall. Daniel said, Grandpa, I m big. I m going to walk on this wall without holding your hand. Watch me! Grandpa s here to hold his hand and catch him if he falls! What did Daniel like to do? What did Grandpa do when Daniel walked on a wall? Why do you think Daniel was glad for Grandpa? Daniel soon could walk on the little walls without holding Grandpa s hand. But Grandpa always watched him, ready to help Daniel if he needed help. Daniel walks on walls; even big, high walls; Let s Talk About the Story Grandpa sang his song: Grandpa s here to hold his hand and catch him if he falls! Grandpa laughed. Sure, he said. Up you go. Daniel walks on walls; yes, Daniel walks on walls; (Sing to The Farmer in the Dell tune.) Daniel said, I m glad, too. I forgot what to do when you weren t here. Can I walk on the wall now, Grandpa? Will you hold my hand this time? Every time Daniel s grandpa came over, they went for walks together. Daniel liked to go for walks. Best of all, Daniel liked to walk on walls. Grandpa always helped Daniel walk on walls. Grandpa would hold Daniel s hand and sing: Grandpa smiled. I m glad I was here to catch you, so you wouldn t fall! Daniel nodded. It hurts a little bit. But I m OK. Are you all right? Grandpa asked. Walking on a Wall Daniel was SO GLAD to see Grandpa! He stopped crying. He swung one leg over the wall and one, two, three, he threw himself into Grandpa s arms. Grandpa hugged him tightly. 3. Distribute materials. Harry licked up some of it. Mom came into the kitchen. She looked surprised and angry! Now look what you did! Preston said to Harry. Preston was MAD! Then Harry jumped up on Preston. The glass of juice went flying! Oh, Harry! You re not supposed to be in here! Preston said. I forgot to close the door! God loves us. Best of all, He sent Jesus to us! The Bible says, God has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Sometimes we call Jesus the Savior. Jesus is the Savior because He is the One God sent to help us love and obey God. Repeat Bible verse with children. Let s thank God for showing His love by sending Jesus. Pray briefly. After a while, Preston got thirsty. He ran inside. He went right to the refrigerator to get a glass of juice. Just as Preston took the juice from the refrigerator, he looked around. Harry was running into the house! That s right! Mom said. To shut the door, so Harry stays outside, Preston said. What games did Preston and Harry like to play? What rule did Mom have about Harry? What did Preston forget to do when he came inside? Why do you think Preston will remember the rule next time? One afternoon Preston went outside to play with Harry. At first, Preston threw sticks for Harry to catch. Then Preston threw Harry a ball and Harry brought it back. Then they chased each other around and around the yard. Mom asked, What can you remember when you come in? Let s Talk About the Story Preston and Harry did have fun playing in the yard. Preston would throw a stick as far as he could. Harry would run fast to catch it and bring it back to Preston. He has a big yard to play in. He has a doghouse to keep him dry when it rains. The floor is still all sticky from juice, Mom said. Let s get the mop and clean it up. Mom said, Preston, I forgive you. She gave Preston a hug. Arf! Arf! Scratch! Scratch! Preston s big brown dog Harry was barking and scratching at the door. Please, Mom, please, Preston begged. Can Harry come in the house? Preston was quiet for a few minutes. Then he said, I m sorry, Mom. I forgot to shut the door. Harry The Outside Dog I like Harry, Mom explained, but Harry is an outside dog. She filled it with boxes of cereal, cans of peaches, milk and apples. Mom stopped the cart near the cookies. Aja saw her very FAVORITE kind! She reached out to take a box. Then she remembered the good thing she could do. And she grabbed the cart handle tightly! I remember, Aja whispered back. Soon Mom drove into the parking lot and stopped the car. Aja unbuckled her seat belt and walked with her mom into the store. Mom found a shopping cart. Aja decided to ride in the cart. As Mom put her into the seat, she gave Aja a hug. Mom whispered, Remember the two good things you can do! I can do those two things, Aja said. God helps us do good things. The Bible says, God made us to do good. Repeat Bible verse with children. Let s thank God for helping us do good and obey Him. Pray briefly. You may ride or you may walk. Either choice is fine with me, her mother answered. But before we get to the store, let s talk about two good things you can do to help me while we re there. One good thing you can do is to stop your hands when you want to reach out and touch things on the shelves.
