Supplies: Faber Castell Gelatos: Designing with Gelatos Kit #71912 DecoArt Media Mediums: Tinting Base #87420 Gesso White #87415 Matte Medium #87417 Americana Acrylic Spray Sealer/Finisher Matte #70836 Stencil Americana Inspiration www.decoart.com Americana Decoupage Paper Paisley Punch #82081 Palette Paper #70560 Foam Texture Stamps set of 6 #80183 Brushes: Papillon by the Artist s Club Liner, size 2 #20148 Script Liner, size 10/0 #20137 Angular Shader, size 1/2 #20111; size 1/4 #20109 Shader, size 4 #20126; size 8 #20129 Artist Inspired Brushes Maxine Thomas Mop, size 1/2 #27179 Tips & Techniques: Float / Shade: I always float my color with the angular shaders. Mop to soften with a Mop. I shade around my design elements before basecoating; I like the softer look I get when I do this. Unless other wise indicated, I shade around the entire shape and deepen in corners and under design elements for more depth. Line: Unless otherwise stated, all lining is done with the #10/0 Liner and the paint watered down to an ink-like consistency. DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics: DecoArt Matte Medium: Gelatos: Apply the color as if you were coloring with a crayon. Rub with finger tips to blend. For video tutorials, please visit http://www.fabercastell.com/design-memory-craft-us/video-gallery 1

Preparation: Note: Refer to the color photo for shading and detail placement. Basecoat the entire surface with Gesso. Let dry. Gently sand. Tear the papers into assorted sizes. Adhere the papers to the surface with DecoArt Media Matte Medium. Overlap to create texture. Let dry. Basecoat with a thin coat of Gesso to tone down the pattern and this will also allow the Gelato s to be brighter. Let dry. Color the background now with patches of Gelato colors. Pretend you are scribbling with crayons yes scribbling. You just want to get some color on the surface, you are not going to create a solid patch of color. Revert to your 3-year-old self. Once you have the colors on the background, you are going to use your finger to blend the colors. Dip your finger in water and tap the paper towel to remove the water, you only want a damp finger. Start with one color at a time and gently rub the gelatos to spread the color. I keep a paper towel in my other hand to wipe of my finger each time I dip it in the water. Once you have all the patches of color blended, you can start to blend them together where they meet. Add more of your favorite colors as desired. The gelato package does not show the color names on the crayons. For the background, I used all the colors except the Red, Green and Gold and White. The fun part is that you can use less or more depending on what your favorite colors are. Once you are happy with your background color; you will need to seal it with DecoArt Matte Sealer 2

Finishing Spray. The Gelatos will continue to react with any moisture so this will allow you to continue with the next layers of the project. This will also stop the Gelatos from feeling waxy and the background will feel hard and dry. *Note: You can do this at any time when you are happy with the colors. You can continue to add more gelatos at any time. Trace on the pattern. Basecoat the Vase with Gesso. Stencil the background using the DecoArt Inspiration stencil and DecoArt Media Paynes Grey. Painting Instructions: Vase: Basecoat with Media Titan Buff. Shade down the left side of the Vase with Quinacridone Gold. Base the stripes with Carbon Black. Let dry. Use the White Gelato to line a highlight on the right side if the Vase and blend with your finger. Heart Angel: Head Basecoat with Quinacridone Gold mixed 1:1 with Tinting Base to create the flesh color. Shade with Quinacridone Gold. Dot the eyes with Carbon Black. Dot the pupils with Titan Buff. Color a small dot each cheek with the darkest Pink Gelato then blend with your finger. Roses Use the end of your brush to place a large dot of Primary Magenta where the rose will go. While still wet, quickly place a dot of Titan Buff in the middle of the Magenta dot. Quickly pick up your stylus and swirl the Titan Buff dot into the Primary Magenta. Repeat for each rose. Heart Basecoat with Primary Magenta mixed 1:1 with Tinting Base. Color the shading on the left side with the Darkest Pink Gelato and blend with your finger. Color the highlight on the right with the Lightest Pink Gelato and blend with your finger. Deepen the shading on the left side with the Red Gelato, keeping more to the left than the first shading. Highlight the right with a smaller highlight with the White Gelato. Deepen the shading on the left with Primary Magenta. Float the scallops and dot with Titan Buff. Small Hearts Basecoat with Primary Magenta mixed 1:1 with Tinting Base. Line the shading with the Darkest Pink Gelato and blend with your finger. Line the highlight with the White Gelato and blend with your finger. Deepen the shading with the Red Gelato. 3

Leaves Basecoat with Green Gold mixed 1:1 with Tinting Base. Basecoat again with just Green Gold. Line the shading with the Dark Green Gelato and blend with your finger. Line the highlight with the Yellow Gelato and blend with your finger. Deepen the shading with Phthalo Green Blue. Line all the swirly stems with Carbon Black. Finishing: Outline with Carbon Black. Use the Foam Texture Stamps to add random patches of color over the project as desired. Use your favorite colors from the Gelatos. Spritz the stamp with water and quickly color with the Gelato of your choice and stamp the background. Repeat. I hope you have a lot of fun trying something new. Finish with Americana Acrylic Spray Sealer/Finisher Matte. 4
