F A L L 2 0 1 3 N E W S L E T T E R Phi Beta Kappa Association of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico Fund Drive Success! Mila Gibson to Speak on The State of the Arts in Texas at ΦBK Association Meeting Wondering about the state of the arts in the State of Texas? Come to our annual ΦBK Association meeting on October 5 to hear from and speak with the vivacious and inspiring Mila Gibson, a governor-appointed commissioner on the Texas Commission on the Arts. Mila is the founder and former director of the Amarillo Opera as well as a retired music professor at Amarillo College. She will talk in particular about the recent legislative session s impact on Texas arts and arts education. All ΦBK members and guests are invited. In September of 2003, the ΦBK Alumni Association of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico raised $5,000 to establish a ΦBK scholarship endowment at Texas Tech University. TTU s College of Arts & Sciences matched that initial sum, and further donations over the years brought the value of the endowment to almost $25,000. In December of 2011, Alice White was able to enroll in a matching funds program that would double new donations up to a maximum of $30,000 over three years. We are THRILLED to announce that $30,000 has been raised after only two years, thanks to generous donors, so our scholarship endowment will now grow by $60,000 to a total of almost $85,000! (More on p. 5.) Save the Date Saturday, October 5, 2013 What: Annual Meeting We ll elect officers, celebrate our fund drive success, and renew friendships. Where: Stella s Restaurant Join us in the private room of Stella s: 4646 50 th, Lubbock, Texas. When: 1:30-3:00 P.M Free refreshments and cash bar begin at 1:30; meeting and speaker begin at 2.

PHI BETA KAPPA ASSOCIATION Recent Highlights The Φ BK Association of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico received its charter (see copy on left with list of charter members) from The Phi Beta Kappa Society on December 5, 1997. In just 16 years, our Association has flourished. In 2012, the national society gave us the award for Best Φ BK Association in the nation. 2013 High School Awards Forty-nine juniors from Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, and Midland applied for our Association s 2013 High School Academic Excellence Awards. Ten were awarded summa cum laude status, nineteen were granted magna cum laude status, and seven were designated cum laude. Please tell high schools in your area about this opportunity for outstanding students! Christopher Latour from Lubbock High earned the top recognition this year, along with a $500 cash award. Caroline Norwood from Midland High earned second place and $300. Dylan Treadwell from Lubbock Monterey earned third place and $200. Gold Keys for New Inductees Each of the forty-two students inducted into the Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Texas Tech on April 25, 2013, received gold keys provided by our Association. Since the chapter was installed in 2007, almost 500 TTU students (see photos of past ceremonies to the right) have received gold keys courtesy of our Association - as they have been inducted into lifetime Phi Beta Kappa membership. New Endowment for TTU Press Thanks to the generosity of Alice V. White, this past year our Association established an endowment that will enable us to support Literary Lubbock, an annual celebration of literature, writers, and books from the Texas Tech University Press. 2

Right: 2012 article in Texas Tech Today features our ΦBK Association s and the TTU ΦBK Chapter s Recognitions as Best in the Nation. Presidential Reflections from Mary Jane Hurst The three stars on the Phi Beta Kappa key stand for friendship, morality, and learning. I believe the success of our ΦBK Association can be traced to the manner in which our members exemplify and reflect these three core values. recent period of growth and development. It was particularly gratifying at last year s Triennial Council to hear The Phi Beta Kappa Society recognize our Association, which I have been involved with since its beginning, as the best small population association in the nation and, at the same time, recognize Texas Tech s Phi Beta Kappa Chapter, which I established as founding President, as the best large university chapter in the nation. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve for the third time as President of this fun group and to be part of its continued commitment to Phi Beta Kappa values and to improvements in our community that are possible through friendship, morality, and learning. Our Association has built its solid traditions around ΦBK values. May we continue to develop as we uphold the truth of the ΦBK motto: Love of learning is the guide of life. Sincere thanks go to all who have donated, participated, and contributed to our association during its earliest days as well as during its Officer Elections: Oct. 5 Thanks to those named below who have agreed to stand for election as 2014-2015 Association officers. Alice Young President Alice White Vice Pres. Nancy Barr Secretary Ed Quitevis Treasurer Additional nominations can still be submitted. 3 Alice Young is Professor of Psychology and Associate Vice President for Research at TTU. Retired from TTU, Alice White serves on numerous boards and foundations. Nancy Barr is a retired secondary mathematics teacher and is active in the community. Ed Quitevis is Professor of Chemistry and Joint Professor of Physics at TTU. All are strong supporters of Phi Beta Kappa.

PHI BETA KAPPA ASSOCIATION Kudos! Thank You, Rob Posteraro! Once again, Rob Posteraro did a model job in 2013 of managing the High School Academic Excellence Awards. Alice White and Virginia Downs helped review applications. Each student applicant received a printed certificate, a cover letter encouraging Phi Beta Kappa awareness, and one of our Association bookmarks. A current board member, Rob was President when our Association received its charter. Thank You, Alice White! A former President and current Vice President, Alice White has not only been an advocate for ΦBK values but has been enormously generous with her time, her talents, and her financial resources. Alice s foresight in helping the Association establish new Phi Beta Kappa endowments ensures that the work of Phi Beta Kappa can continue to be a positive force in our region. Thank You, Outgoing Officers For 2014-2015, Mary Jane Hurst will rotate from President to Past President, and Alice White will continue as Vice President, but changes are afoot for the positions of secretary and treasurer. Both roles have been increasingly important as our endowments have developed and our annual reports to the national Society have become more detailed. Marisue Smith and Ed Spence Marisue Smith, outgoing Secretary, has long been active in our ΦBK Association. Ed Spence, outgoing Treasurer, has been involved in the Association since he and Hanne moved to West Texas from St. Louis a few years ago. Be sure to ask Ed about his music or photography, and be sure to ask Marisue about her work as a United Methodist minister. Both have been vital to our Association s successes. 4
