GREEN XMAS TIPS FROM A TO Z Are you dreaming of a green Christmas? Follow our A-Z tips and find out how you can enjoy the festive season without harming the earth and in a really green friendly way. A is for artificial trees: they last for longer, they are made of plastic. You could also choose a tree with roots so that it can be replanted after Xmas. B is for batteries. Batteries contain toxic chemicals, don t biodegrade and are difficult to recycle. As an alternative, use rechargeable batteries or try the AA size USB rechargeable batteries. By opening the cap and plugging into a USB connector, you can recharge them anywhere. Boxes... Colourful wrapping paper can be expensive. For wrapping boxes use recycled brown paper and some string; it may make your gifts look old-fashioned, but also trendy. And green of course. Bottles. Do not use bottles made of plastic. Use bottles made of glass instead which you can reuse many times.

C is for... Candles... Paraffin candles are made of petroleum residue and are no good for your health or for the environment. Candles made from soy, beewax or natural vegetablebased wax are more eco-friendly because they biodegradable and are smoke-free. Cards. You should send e-cards. Or purchase recycled or charity cards. You can also cut up last year's cards and reuse them. Carrier bags. When doing the Xmas shopping use bags made of textile instead of bags made of paper or plastic which are diposable thus creating waste. D is for... Decorations - Use recycled decorations - use CDs and juice cartons to make your tree sparkle. Or decorate your tree with products that are hand-made using textiles, coloured papers. Defrost your freezer before Christmas. It will work more efficiently and create more space to store leftovers, so that they don't go to waste. Deforestation. To prevent massive deforestation do not wrap your gifts in wrapping paper; be creative. For example wrap your presents into pages of old books and use strings. E is for... Economizing: use LED lights on Christmas decorations. Energy saving: electricity spoils natural resources; so reducing the size of outdoor lighting display will save energy. Environmentally friendly: choose wrapping paper carefully. Eve: invite your family to play traditional games instead of watching TV.

F is for Free-battery gifts: the right choice for presents. Faith: believe the humankind, yourself and your ability to change the world for a better place. Food: change waste for sympathy think about those who lack the basics. Fireplace: save fuel and you ll be saving the earth. G is for Gifts: make your own Xmas presents. Greetings: create and send your own Xmas cards. Go green: trim a natural Xmas tree with nature remains (leaves, pines, berries, small bushes, ). Global Warming: reduce the impact of the season on the planet. H is for Help: buy presents at local merchants instead of at supermarkets. Holly: decorate your place with holly and greenery. Harmony: reach out for those in need and Mother Nature. Homemade: bake your own Xmas pastry and cook your own food.

I is for Icing: Sweet used to cover and decorate baked foods. Invitation: Christmas means reunited with loved ones, to enjoy the company and celebrate, to take advantage of this time to catch up with friends and family members. Infant: To respect nature for infant people. J is for Jingle: Short musical motif, from the simple melodic line and easy to remember that accompanies our Christmas. As choral singing, it is also an expression of deep personal feelings and sociability. Jars: You can recycle them without losing quality, realizing also delicious presents. Joy: Christmas is a time of joy, when donating makes you happy. K is for Key: At Christmas, let us pause a little and discover the key for... friendship, for love, for family, for work, for honesty. Kitchen: At Christmas it is the most bustling room at home. To keep: An action to go back with fashion. Don t do a bad use of natural resources. We need to keep some...

L is for Leds: Allow you to save energy, last longer, be efficient and sustainable. Landscape: The landscape, according to the European Convention of 2000, is defined as a specific part of the territory, as perceived by people, whose character derives from nature and / or humans and their interrelations. One for all, all for Green is our landscape: students and teachers far away, whose activities are marking a territory ideally united in a common purpose. Light: Christmas is a festival of light, but unfortunately helps light pollution. Then... Let's turn off lights when not needed Let's use shielded lighting fixtures Let's save energy and economic resources We don t have to illuminate beyond measure monuments, churches, and other urban objects Don't use laser lights Let's send the light only where citizens benefit from it Don't alter the natural balance Day / Night Let's reduce the light output for late night Don't send artificial lights towards the sky, it is a World Heritage Site M is for.. Mulled Wine If you re entertaining friends, mulled wine is a great festive treat. Organic, Fair-trade, vegetarian and vegan wine. Try local products deriving from small vineyards, often run by families, who produce according to strict organic farming practices and wine cellars that care about the environmental impact of the wines they sell Mistletoe: makes its annual appearance each December as millions of Americans and Europeans hang a sprig of it in their doorways during the holiday season. Keep up with tradition and local customs. Get inspired by nature. Enter mistletoe in your Christmas decorations and your Christmas spirit. N is for.. Natural festive smell

Take an orange and wrap thin red ribbon around it length and width ways. Glue or pin it to the orange. Leave enough ribbon to make a loop to attach to your tree. Then press cloves into the orange skin. Cover the whole orange or create patterns. Now sit back and enjoy that beautiful spicy smell. Natural moisturizer: Olive oil is great for the skin; add a drop of lavender oil for scent. Napkins: Use cloth over paper. Instead of using paper napkins and towels, try cloth instead. It s gentler on the environment and on your grocery budget too! O is for Ornaments: Homemade Christmas ornaments Gum Drop Pomander Ornaments, Mod House Christmas Ornaments, Cinnamon Cookie-Cutter Ornaments, Cinnamon Sticks, Painted Pinecone. December is here and you ve got to admit the signs are everywhere. Twinkling lights on every street, red-nosed reindeers greeting you at every doorway, and coworkers no longer being secretive about their Christmas music listening. Get on board with the festivities because without ornaments your Tannenbaum is just a pine tree. P is for. Presents There plenty of eco-friendly shops with fabulous eco-friendly range of cards, calendars and gifts. So you can do all your festive shopping and support friends of the Earth at the same time. Planet-friendly pampering with a donation to Friends of the Earth Want to treat yourself, or looking for a special gift? You can buy your presents from enterprises which over the Christmas period are supporting eco friendly organizations by donating part of their sales from selected items to them. Plenty of popcorn Thread plain popcorn onto string to make natural garlands, wreaths and decorations. For an added festive feel use natural food colors to dye the popcorn. Good news for birds too - the popcorn can be unthreaded and put out in the garden after Christmas. But make sure it's only plain popcorn - salted, sweet or flavored will make them ill. Products: Locally grown and recycled ones An easy way to reduce your carbon footprint is to buy locally grown products. When you shop locally instead of buying products that were shipped from far away, you are actually supporting local dairies and farms.

When you go out for shopping, try to buy products from market that are made up of recycled materials with minimal packaging i.e. the product should be environment friendly. Look into manufacturing processes to check if it was made from recycled materials or the use of plastics or chemicals was involved in its production.
