G eoffrey B ell a u c t i o n s October 2 n d & 3 r d 2014 Toronto Reference Library, Ontario Featuring the collection of Richard S. Malone

Richard S. Malone Richard Sydney Malone was born in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia in 1919, shortly after the end of the Great War, in which his older brother Sydney gave the ultimate sacrifice. On the fateful day (Dec. 6th, 1917) in Halifax Harbour, Sydney was onboard the tug boat Stella Maris, while making the daring attempt to tow the ship S.S. Mont-Blanc out of harm's way when it exploded resulting in he, and the majority of his crew-mates loss of life in what would become known as the Halifax Explosion. Richie as he would become known later in life also had his own brush with death. As a young teenager he was involved in a hunting accident that left him handicapped, losing both an eye and a thumb. In many ways this event would lead to building his strong character and focus his life. He was always concerned about the well being of his family and others less fortunate than himself in the wider community. Richie was a long time member of the Philadelphia masonic lodge in Barrington and was affiliated with the Shriners in Halifax. Ritchie, as a young man, met and married Gertrude and they subsequently raised three children. As a husband and wife team both were to become astute collectors, her passion with antique glass and his with coins and paper money. It was during the late 1930s and early 40s that he began his collecting career which started by picking up odds and sods during an early business venture between himself and his brother at butchering and pedalling meats door to door. However, his first foray into the organized world of numismatics didn t occur until 1964, when he attended the CNA convention in Halifax, N.S. At this time Richie was now a well established businessman having been a lobster buyer in the late 1940s and had recently moved into the field of fish meal processing. This also seemed to be a turning point in his collecting as he purchased approximately 50 lots in the auction. He soon developed a fascination with gold and paper money and collected each with vigour. The next significant event that he attended was the 1970 CNA Halifax convention, where he purchased 30 lots which included a number of select banknotes. After a lull in collecting his interests were once again piqued in the 1990s when he joined the Sou wester Coin Club. Here he met fellow collectors, Doug Shand and Herbert Penney who were to become great friends and travelling companions to all of the major Maritime coin shows, where one could see Richie holding court in the corner of the show reception with collectors making a beeline to him to either discuss coins, or just wanting to sit and talk with a friend and/or share memories with an old acquaintance. Richie was a true gentleman, good friend and family patriarch who sadly passed away in 2010 at the age of 91.

Woodside, left, and Jas. Metcalfe, right. A portrait of the Duke of Wellington is seen at the left, the crest of the bank is superimposed on the Royal Crest in the centre, and a sailor stands at the right. The note register for this bank, not yet published, records only three $1 notes of the partially engraved date variety, and two of them are institutional. This is therefore the only example available to collectors. All three recorded notes are in approximately the same condition. The note offered here is a pleasing VG with minor border roughness as expected for the grade, and there are numerals in ink on the back. Colours on both sides remain impressively fresh and bright. Collectors are beginning to pay more attention to notes of the Royal Canadian Bank, and we expect this outstanding and very desirable rarity to set a solid price. S/N:3237/A. $20,000-$25,000 40 GB

Sailor at capstan at left, allegorical group around three crests at centre, Albert, Prince Consort, at right. The manuscript signature is C. S. Murray. Condition of the note is a very attractive Fine, with slight roughness in the top edge and a minor nick at the bottom centre. The apparent missing corners and bit at the top are in fact present, or largely so, and need only to be smoothed out carefully. This note is a new addition to the register, and becomes the third 1861 $5 to bear the KINGSTON overprint. The other two are in the National Currency Collection: this note is therefore the ONLY example known to be available to collectors. Catalogue value is $3,000 but, based on recent auction realizations, we confidently expect this note to sell substantially higher. S/N:48766. $3,000-$4,000 880. 1859 Bank of Upper Canada $10. All $10 notes of the Bank of Upper Canada are very rare, and there are only three known examples of this variety, one of them being in the National Currency Collection. It lists as Charlton LC-60A1 and Courteau 21. The last and only sale in the recent 2 decades was lot 2382 in the Hoare Auction of Fall, 1989. That specimen was described as VF and as good as the W.W. Wilson specimen sold by Wayte Raymond. It brought $4800 plus fees. Our specimen is VG and is counterstamped with C. Moore on the obverse. The token purist might be offended but counterstamped Canadian tokens are extremely popular today as witnessed by the recent Ford sale in Chicago. Courteau gave this rarity a R-10 designation and stated he knew of 3 or 4 examples. This token was thought to be ante-dated to gain entry into Canada. Tokens dated 1825 were legal even though McLaughlin, Willey and others thought otherwise. Who was C. Moore? That should prove to be a great detective piece of work. One might assume C could be Charles. It was a commonly used first name in the 1830-1850 period. We will tease you with Charles Moore, an innkeeper in Simcoe in 1851. There was also a Charles Moore in 1872 in the Township of Watt and a doctor by that name in 1869 listed in the Province of Ontario Gazateer and Directory. It is also possible this could be an American counterstamp. All this to say we have a great Canadian rarity. We anticipate spirited bidding. $5,000-$6,000 1212. Lot of Ten Pre-Conderation Tokens. A few letters of the legend are legible. This is a mysterious token which, on the face of it, might seem to have something in common with the series of evasion halfpence with misleading legends issued in England in the late eighteenth century. However, the legends on this token are completely nonsensical and its specifications quite different from the English issues. It would, therefore, seem to be an imitation of an evasion halfpenny, that is, an imitation of an imitation! A smooth Fine/VG, with the strings of the harp visible across the curls and face of the portrait bust as is usual with this token. Ex: Warren Baker. $1,000-$1,250 1266. Br 1013. It is said that McDermott s card never circulated, but that assertion seems refuted by the existence of specimens with obvious wear. Although McDermott was in business in Saint John for a number of years, Richard Bird, in his Coins of New Brunswick (1993: 43) suggests that McDermott issued his token in 1846, the only year in which he was located on King Street.
