1 MARK THE DOOR 2 DOUBLE CHECK COMPATIBILITY OF DOOR STILE & TRIM 3 MORTISE LOCK POCKET FOR LOCK BODY Mark the door at 36" above finished floor, or if retrofit, at appropriate location to coordinate with existing strike preparations. This will be the centerline of knob or lever location (not the centerline of lock.) DOOR EDGE Make sure that the door stile will accommodate the intended lock and trim. Ensure trim will not interfere with doorstop or extend over door panel or glass Mortise the pocket in the door 1/8" deeper than the lock being installed. Refer to the Installation Template Guide Chart for exact size of mortise pocket. 4a PREPARE FOR LOCK FRONT 4b PREPARE FOR LOCK FRONT 5 CUT RELIEF POCKETS Route for the lock front. Square the corners. Cut the relief pockets 3/8" deep on both sides for the Latch Hinge, 2-1/2" & 2-3/4" backset only (does not apply for 1" front) 6 DETERMINE HOLE PATTERN REQUIRED FOR TRIM ON TEMPLATE GUIDE CHART 7 MARK DOOR ** BACKSET IS LOCATED FROM LOW SIDE OF BEVELED DOOR 8 DRILL HOLES Determine hole pattern required for trim (see Installation Template Guide chart). Mark the listed holes on the lock template enclosed with the lock. For 1-3/4" doors, fold lock template. Mark door at appropriate locations for lock and trim. MARK APPROPRIATE BACKSET. Extra thick conditions, see General notes on back page. Drill appropriate holes as indicated on lock template. DO NOT OVERSIZE HOLES.
9 THREAD PLUG 10 ADJUST BEVEL AND INSTALL LOCK 11 Handle Set Trim (Diagram A) INSERT SPINDLE TAPE #10-32 x 1/2" PAN HEAD, SEMS Thread the cylinder plug on interior side of lock. Place a strip of tape over plug to keep it from turning. (Double cylinder functions: OMIT THIS STEP.) #10-32 x 1" FLAT HEAD COMBINATION S Drill (2) 1/8" pilot holes for the lock face, adjust the bevel and install the lock. Shim between the lock and door on cylinder side as shown to prohibit the cylinder from pulling the lock off center. Tighten the lock front screws 12 SIZE THUMBPIECE 13 INSTALL EXTERIOR SIDE TRIM 14 AND BOTTOM THRU-BOLT INTERIOR For handleset trim install the spindle from the inside and thread the screw and lockwasher into the spindle from the outside. Tighten securely. INSTALL EXTERIOR SHOWN ACTUAL SIZE #10-32 x 3-1/4" OVAL HEAD A = 3/8" - For 2-1/4" Thk Door B = 1/2" - For 2" Thk Door C = 5/8" - For 1-3/4" Thk Door Note: 3" Thk Door requires no cutting Cut the thumbpiece to fully engage the lift lever. Mount exterior trim, aligning thumbpiece properly, using thru-bolt & standoff. Use screw base on lower pull mounting. Place the cylinder through the trim, insert key 2/3 the way into the cylinder and carefully thread the cylinder into the lock. Do not tighten. 15 INSTALL INTERIOR SIDE TRIM AND REMAINING THRU-BOLTING 16 TIGHTEN LOCK FRONT S 17 INSTALL ARMOR PLATE #10-32 x 1-3/4" OVAL HEAD SET #8-32 x 7/32" FLAT HEAD S #10-32 x 3-1/4" Mount interior trim by placing turnpiece spindle into lock hub and slide knob /lever assembly onto mortise spindle. Tighten the trim thru-bolts. Thread the cylinder in and tighten/loosen cylinder as required to ensure 'Baldwin' logo is in the horizontal position. Lock the cylinder in place by tightening the cylinder set screw. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Install the armor plate (scalp).
18 MARK AND MORTISE JAMB FOR STRIKE LOCATION 19 INSTALL DUST BOX 20 INSTALL SECURITY STRIKE Mark the jamb for the proper strike location. Coat extended bolt head with graphite, powdered chalk or lipstick. Retract the bolt, close the door and actuate the knob or lever several times. This will mark the jamb. Add approximately 1/32" clearance from that mark. * Chisel cavity 1/4" deep. Install the dust box. Pre-drill holes using 1/8" bit. Install security strike. Ensure 3" screws for security strike are installed on the stop side of the plate. Note: Security Strikes are supplied ONLY with locks, which utilize cylinders. 21 INSTALL STRIKE PLATE * Apply any weather-stripping before strike has been installed. General Notes: Paper template is designed for 1-3/4" thick doors. For extra thick doors, measure backset from center of door edge. Tape supplied template to the door to locate placement of hole pattern of lock and trim. ** Paper template is located on the low side of the bevel on the door. When installing hardware on metal doors, ensure the door was designed to accommodate mortise locks. If in doubt, check with your local door distributor or door manufacturer. Removal of hardware from doors is recommended before painting and finishing of the door. Allow finishing materials to fully cure before reinstalling hardware, usually ten days to two weeks. Check paint manufacturer instructions. Install the strike plate. Retain these instructions in a safe place should you need to disassemble the lock trim or require Baldwin Hardware Corporation's assistance.
