Chess is an excellent academic activity; it develops memory, concentration, and logical reasoning. The SMS Chess Club provides chess instruction and practice for kids who want to learn chess or improve their chess skills. At least one instructor from the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation (WSCF) directs each session. To learn more about the WSCF and using chess as an educational tool, please refer to their website at www.wisconsinscholasticchess.org. We will also provide the students with access to www.chesskid.com. This will allow our more advanced Chess players to improve their skills even further! The club has its own chess sets, so there s no need to bring one. We ask that each family sign up to volunteer during one session (no chess knowledge required!). To sign up for Chess Club, please complete the form below and return it to the school office in an envelope labeled Chess. Please sign-up no later than October 9 th. We will end the season hosting an SMS Chess Tournament March 3rd! If you have questions, please contact Gianna Szatmary (gianna.szatmary@gmail.com) or Meghan Fetherston (thefetherstons@gmail.com) Notes from the Gym First of all, I wanted to mention that there are St. Monica gym shirts of all sizes in stock and ready to purchase for those unable to buy them at Forms and Fees day. They are available in the school office for $5 each, and we have youth sizes all the way up to adult sizes. Checks can be made payable to: St. Monica Home & School, or feel free to send cash. This was a busy weekend in the lives of our St. Monica student-athletes.and a lot to be proud of! Our Jam the Gym event for the girls volleyball teams went quite well, and I was impressed by the fact that we had a lot of students in the stands cheering on their classmates. J Thank you to everyone who came out to support the event! I am pleased to announce that all of our fall season schedules will be up on our St. Monica School website soon, along with the Archdiocesan paperwork that needs to be turned in each year. This way, you can follow your favorite St. Monica teams simply by going to our site. I will also try to get League standings onto the site once I receive them. Please understand that this will be a work in progress, and yet, I hope that it will be helpful to our entire St. Monica community. Next, there is a special event for volleyball players on Tuesday, September 26 th at Dominican High School. All grade school volleyball players will be admitted into the game for free if they are in their game uniform, and Dominican will be playing the Shoreland Lutheran Pacers at 7:00pm. This sounds like a fun night, with the chance to see varsity players (three of them St. Monica alumni) in action, along with free popcorn and prizes. A flyer is included in the Weekly Reminder. Finally, we will have our fall sports picture day this afternoon!! We will have all of the volleyball players and cross country runners change into their game uniforms right after school, and will start with the photos as soon possible (hopefully around 3:20). Order forms from VIP were handed out last week, but there will be extras available as well. Thank you so much for your support of St. Monica Athletics, and everything that happens in the gym! Go Raiders! Mrs. Wallner

SAVE THE DATE NOVEMBER 11, 2017 6:00 PM DONOVAN HALL Auction and Dinner Dance News Preparations are in full swing for the big event on November 11th! We are counting on our wonderful school community to come together to support this important fundraiser for the school. Here s what you can do to help: 1. COME TO THE EVENT!! Please start thinking about putting a table of 8-10 together. Consider asking someone new to the school to join you, or sitting with parents you may not know as well. Invitations will be going out in October. 2. Consider being an Underwriter! The more money we can raise to offset the cost of the event, the more every penny raised on November 11th goes straight to our bottom line. If your company does matching donations, this is a great way to make your donation pack an even bigger punch. The Underwriting Form is attached to the Weekly Reminder. You can fill it out and turn it into the office. 3. Donate an item or service for the Auction! We are looking for all sorts of auction items: tickets, gift certificates, themed packages (wine lover basket, family game night, a foodie delight basket, special Christmas decorations, unique home decor items ). The Auction Donor Form is attached. Please fill out the form and turn it into the office. Item drop off times will be arranged at a later date. THANK YOU!
