Jack O Lantern Bag With Halloween just around the corner, take an hour to whip up our fun Jack O Lantern trick or treating bag. This small bag is both quick and easy to put together, and this charming grin is sure to attract lots of candy!! Our bag is 10 inches wide x 7 inches high and is 2 inches deep. You Will Need: ¼ metre ( ¼ yard)plain orange fabric for the outer ¼ metre ( ¼ yard) fabric for the lining Small amount of plain black or dark grey fabric for the reverse applique contrast face ½ metre (½ yard) medium-weight fusible interfacing Small amount fusible webbing (at least 11 x 8 inches)
Bag Construction: Please read all instructions fully before beginning. All measurements are in inches, and unless stated otherwise, a ¼ inch seam allowance has been used. Referring to the attached Cutting Guide, carefully cut the required bag pieces from the bag fabrics, pellon and interfacing as required. Construction: Using the attached template, cut the bag side panels. Cut in pairs, so your finished bag will have the stem pointing in the same direction on each side. Iron the fusible webbing to the wrong side of your front orange panel and trim the excess away. Cut out the eye, nose and mouth shapes from the template, reverse it, and trace them onto the paper side of your fusible webbing, on the back of the orange front panel as pictured. Carefully cut out the shapes.
Peel the paper backing away, and lay your orange front panel on top of the matching black/dark grey panel. Use your iron to fuse the layers together as shown. You may choose to topstitch around each shape if you like. Now fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of each of your bag pieces. With right sides together, pair the front outer with the front lining panel, and back with back. Stitch around the shapes, leaving about a 4 inch gap in one side, to turn it through. Clip the seam allowance up to but not through the stitched line, and turn right sides out. Press well and tuck in the seam allowances at the gap and pin. Topstitch around the shape to flatten and close the gap. You may choose to stitch a stem on the back panel as we did
The long strips are handle and gusset in one. With right sides together, sew the outer and lining strips together down one side. Open out and press. Also fold over and press the seam allowance down each of the long sides of this strip. With right sides together, join the ends together to form a fabric circle. Press the seam allowances open, then fold the handle strip in half, with right sides out. Tuck in the folded seam allowances, pin, and topstitch around the circle (both edges) to finish this strip. With the join at the bottom, pin the gusset/handle strip to the front bag panel, with wrong sides together. Ease it around the curves. Mark a point to start and stop stitching (evenly on each side) just down the curved sides, as pictured. Carefully topstitch the gusset to the bag front panel. Make sure your panels are lined up correctly, then pin and topstitch the back panel to the gusset, taking care to start and stop at the same points up the sides. It s time now to go looking for treats!
