Student Western Art Contest Rules and Regulations "Western art is representational art of cowboys, Indians, wildlife and the terrain of western landscape." The San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. (SALE) Western Art Committee s intention is to encourage the education and appreciation of our western heritage. Therefore, the above definition will be the guideline as to what we consider western art (source: Houston Public Library Information Center). This contest is open to South Central Texas high school students currently enrolled in an accredited public or private high school or a home school environment. (See listings of eligible school districts and counties.) Any student participating in the contest must be a citizen of the United States and be able to provide a valid Social Security number. Students who have had or are in the process of having artwork published and/or used for profit are not eligible. I. CONTEST GUIDELINES A. Students, parents, and teachers are not permitted to be present during the judging. Students, parents and teachers are invited to the Student Western Art Contest Reception on the Sunday afternoon following the contest where the artwork will be on display. B. Only one entry per student C. No more than one student may work on a single entry. D. Illustrations (paintings, drawing, etc.) and sculptures may be entered. E. The entries judged to be the Top 25 entries will be either live or silent auctioned prior to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The student artist will receive the proceeds from the auctions in the form of college scholarship funds from the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. The Artwork Will Not Be Returned to the Student. By entering the contest, you indicate that you understand and agree that your artwork, if judged as one of the Top 25 entries, will be auctioned and proceeds will be disbursed on behalf of the student in the form of college scholarship funds. Receipt and distribution of the scholarship funds is subject to meeting the criteria and rules established by the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. Students who fail to meet this criteria will forfeit these funds. F. Required Entry Forms a) Each entry must have a completed Artwork Receipt Tag attached to the paperwork. b) Each student must submit the S.A.L.E. Student Western Art Contest and Auction Release Agreement. The release must be signed by the student and parent or legal guardian if the student is under the age of 18. The student and parent/legal guardian signatures must be notarized. c) The Photography Release form must be attached if the student uses a photographic source. ARTWORK THAT IS NOT ACCOMPANIED BY THESE FORMS (PROPERLY EXECUTED AND NOTARIZED UPON DELIVERY) WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. II. JUDGING CRITERIA A. The following criteria will be used to judge the entries: a) Composition demonstrated use of aesthetic balance of visual weight, including object and color placement as it applies to the artwork b) Craftsmanship with chosen medium Sophisticated use of brushwork, color mixing, blending, and skilled control of materials used. c) Demonstrated Artistic Skill- Advanced handling of proportion, linear and atmospheric perspective, value, contrast, accurate drawing of details of subject, correct size relationships (i.e., legs bend the right way, cows the right size for the barn, saddles and bridles don t have missing elements, etc.) Revised September 2017 Student Western Art Contest Rules and Regulations Page 1 of 5

d) Creative, Fresh Approach skillful application of innovative approach to subject matter (i.e. unusual point of view, or other original approach) e) Western Themed Content subject obviously western, or subject placed in western context (i.e. a portrait of a goat would not rank as high as a picture of a goat in a typical western ranch setting) f) Title of Artwork a great title will be thought-provoking and be an artist s way of enhancing emotion concerning the subject B. These criteria will be weighted equally. III. ENTRIES A. Originality of artwork a) Student must indicate the source of inspiration on the S.A.L.E. Student Western Art Contest and Auction Release Agreement form to avoid disqualification due to copying. Acceptable examples are: 1. In class model or display 2. Student s own or old family photograph 3. Teacher s Photograph 4. Student s imagination. b) All artwork must be the student s original composition. No copies, by hand, electronic or mechanical device, of any previously published piece of art, previously published photograph, or other copyright protected material will be allowed. c) A student may use as a source reference a non-published photograph he or she has received permission from the photographer to use, and the photographer must sign the Photography Release form. If the student, or another student, took the photo and is a minor, that student s parent or legal guardian must also sign the release. d) When any such non-published photo is used for reference, a good quality copy of the photo must also be provided with the Photography Release form. It will not be returned to student. THE ORIGINAL PHOTO(S) OR DIGITAL DISK SHOULD BE KEPT BY STUDENT AND MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW UPON REQUEST. B. Only the student submitting the artwork can perform work on the entry. C. Artwork should be titled. (See judging criteria) D. It should be indicated on the Artwork Receipt Tag whether a grid was used by the student. E. The art must be western art. The following are considered acceptable subject matter: a) Ranch Life (Past or Present) b) Cowboy or Rodeo events c) Texas agriculture landscape or an imaginative country and western scene d) Native American subject matter. e) If wildlife is used, it MUST be common to the continental USA and MUST be shown in a western setting. F. Certain subjects are categorized as NOT acceptable for the Student Western Art Contest. The following will not be accepted and subject to disqualification: a) Satanic or violent art b) Nudes and inappropriate clothing, or lack thereof c) Items with profanity or of a lewd nature d) Gang symbols or themes e) Any wildlife not naturally found habituating in the continental USA, such as tigers, zebra, elephants, etc. f) The following are not acceptable, unless pictured in a western setting: 1. Fishing scenes 2. Individual pictures of fish, butterflies, frogs, or other wildlife. g) Pictures of bowls of fruit or flowers, unless symbolic of Texas or Old West or used in a Western setting. G. Certain types, styles and methods of artwork are NOT permitted in the Student Western Art Contest. The following will not be accepted and subject to disqualification: a) Jewelry/ Belt buckles b) Photographic work c) Framed illustrations d) Wet paintings e) Charcoal or pastels that are not sprayed f) Entries made from mechanical or electronic devices such as (but not limited to): 1. Assistance of opaque or overhead projectors 2. Photocopied or otherwise professionally or mechanically reproduced images 3. Computer generated or computer enhanced art to include use of scanners 4. Sewing machine 5. No molds (only hand tools may be used) H. Certain materials may NOT be used in artwork submitted to the Student Western Art Contest. Artwork using any of these materials will not be accepted and subject to disqualification: a) Glitter b) Plastic Figures c) Pre-packaged, pre-cut craft or art kits d) Commercial, newsprint lettering, stencils, or rub-on letters in their original form e) Sand (unless it is glued or sealed, not loose) f) Wax g) Any fragile material that easily breaks or may be damaged by routine handling during setting up or our exhibit (i.e. Soft clay, glass, etc.) h) Living things I. Illustrations Guidelines a) The following MEDIA are examples of acceptable mediums: 1. Pastels 5. Ink 9.Chalk 2. Watercolor 6. Charcoal 10. Scratchboard 3. Oil Paint 7. Pencil 4. Acrylic Paint 8. Mixed Media b) Size of illustrations- Dimensions may be vertical or horizontal, but they must not exceed specified sizes. Incorrect sizes are subject to disqualification. 1. Minimum- 11 X 14 (including up to 3 ½ mat) 2. Maximum- 18 X 24 (including up to 3 ½ mat) c) Matting and mounting of illustrations 1. Illustrations must be matted. Professional mats are recommended, but they are not required. At a minimum, sturdy material such as poster board or heavy construction paper should be used that prevents sagging of artwork when hung. 2. Mat size must not exceed 3 ½ on any side. Double matting is acceptable, but total width of the double matting must not exceed the 3 ½ maximum. 3. Mat color is limited to white, black, or light gray. 4. Paintings on canvas with wooden stretcher frames, or on wood, must have a hook or wire on back for hanging, but need not be matted. 5. Paintings on hardboard canvas may be matted or mounted with sturdy poster board instead of using hooks or wires. A minimum mat edge of 1 will enable the artwork to be displayed with clips, without damage to the canvas board. 6. Acrylic coverings may be used, but are not recommended (they make our judging more difficult). Be sure if they are attached, they can be easily removed for photography purposes. d) Charcoals and pastels must be sprayed. e) Wet Paintings will not be accepted. f) Illustrations should have an envelope taped to the back, forming a pocket. Slip all the required forms into that pocket, but leave the envelope unsealed so that forms can be removed and replaced as needed. J. Sculpture Guidelines a) Sculptures may be constructed by hand of any of the following materials: 1. Clay (air, dried, or fired) 5. Plaster 2. Wire, chicken wire, etc. 6. Paper Mache 3. Wood 7. Any other material that meets the 4. Metal boundaries of our rules and regulations. b) Sculptures should be well made and able to stand alone. Any sculpture made of any fragile material must have a base to support it. PLEASE NOTE: Our exhibit will be open to the public including small children, and although we do our best to protect all artwork, it is impossible for us to control the activity of every person viewing our exhibit. FRAGILE SCULPTURES SUBJECT TO DAMAGE BY ROUTINE HANDLING SHOULD NOT BE ENTERED. Soft clay will not be accepted. We will not be responsible for damage! c) Maximum size- Sculptures are not to exceed 20 in height or width, including the base. d) Weight- Sculptures should not be excessive or weigh more than an average person can easily carry. e) Place your sculpture in a box with padding. Tape an envelope to the side of the box, forming a pocket. Slip all the required forms into that pocket, but leave the envelope unsealed so that forms can be removed and replaced as needed. Use a heavy marker to write your name and the name of your school on the outside of the box. IV. ART CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT A. Check-In a) All artwork will be checked in at the Dairy Center on the Friday prior to the judging on Saturday. b) Check-in time is from noon until 7:00 pm on Friday. c) Each entry must have the following completed/signed paperwork attached to the artwork in their envelopes: 1. Artwork Receipt Tag - student/teacher should keep a copy to check-out artwork. 2. S.A.L.E. Student Western Art Contest and Auction Release Agreement form - Signatures MUST be notarized. 3. Photography Release form - if required per rules above. B. Check-Out a) All artwork not judged to be TOP 25 will be checked out to the student or teacher following the reception on the Sunday afternoon following the judging. b) Check-out time is from 3:30 to 4:30 pm on Sunday. If for any reason you cannot pick-up your artwork at this time you must make prior arrangements with your school team liaison. c) All artwork not judged to be in TOP 25 must be picked up on Sunday. Artwork not picked up at that time may not be returned unless special arrangement has been made in advance. d) The artwork judged to be in the TOP 25 will be retained by the S.A.L.E. Western Art Committee and exhibited at The Briscoe Western Art Museum and during the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in February in the EXPO Hall. e) The artwork judged to be in the TOP 15 will be sold at a live auction to the highest bidder. The remaining pieces in the TOP 25 (pieces 16-25) will be sold at a silent auction to the highest bidder. All auction proceeds are the property of S.A.L.E. and are disbursed as college scholarship payments provided established requirements and criteria are met. REMINDERS Verify required paperwork signed and notarized as required and in envelope attached to artwork. o Artwork Receipt Tag o S.A.L.E. Student Western Art Contest and Auction Release Agreement o Photography Release & copy of photo Verify you are referring to and using the current year form revisions (see footer on form). Verify artwork does not exceed size restrictions Verify artwork meets matting and mounting guidelines Verify artwork does not fall into an unacceptable medium, type or subject matter category. ORIGINALITY There have been many questions and concerns on the topic of student originality in art. Many students do not have personal knowledge of the subjects required for this competition. Therefore, published and printed material may be one of the tools the student uses to research the idea for his or her art. Please be careful how this tool is used. For example: When a student researches a paper for History or English, published material is used to compile his facts or thoughts on the subject. It is very unlikely that a student will receive a grade if he copies the material. The same holds true for art. PUBLISHED MATERIAL MAY NOT BE COPIED, IN WHOLE OR IN PART. The student may use as a source reference a non-published photograph he or she has received permission from the photographer to use, and the photographer must sign the "Photography Release" form. If the student who took the photo is a minor, the parent or legal guardian must sign the release. When any such non-published photo is used for reference, a good quality copy of the photo must be included in the envelope. If a historical family photo is used, the student must be able to verify who took the photo. THE ORIGINAL PHOTO(S) OR DIGITAL DISK MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW UPON REQUEST. The photo copy will NOT be returned. Although the student may use an approved photograph as a reference source, the student may NOT use any mechanical means to reproduce any part of the photograph, such as a computer, an opaque projector, photocopier, or any other device. The student and parent or legal guardian MUST sign the S.A.L.E. Student Western Art Contest and Auction Release Agreement which includes a Declaration of Originality that declares the artwork to be the original composition of the student. If, after the competition is completed, a winning piece of artwork is found to have been copied, any proceeds on behalf of the student will be forfeited. Failure to comply with the Rules and Regulations will also result in forfeiture of awards. Repeated violations of this rule, or any other rule(s), may disqualify the offending school from future participation in this competition. Any legal issue arising from the infringement of copyright law is the sole responsibility of the student and his/her legal guardians. I agree that the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc., The Briscoe Western Art Museum, and their duly authorized persons or representatives will not be held responsible for any copyright infringements, and I(we)will release and indemnify and hold them harmless from any and all claims.
