Carpentry & Joinery, Painting & Decorating 2018-2019 For the future you want

CARPENTRY & JOINERY, If you are looking to train for a career in carpentry and joinery or painting and decorating, you will find a great range of pre apprentice and apprentice courses at Edinburgh College. All our courses provide a vocational qualification designed to prepare you for employment, for career development or for progression to further study. You may have the opportunity to work on real projects which relate the tasks you could expect to find in the industry. We work with the training provider CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) on our apprenticeship courses as well as supporting pre-apprentices into employment where possible. Edinburgh college is proud to support students through regional and national competitions where we have achieved a great deal of success over recent years. FACILITIES Our excellent facilities ensure our Carpentry & Joinery, Painting & Decorating training is of the highest standard. You will find up-to-date workshop facilities that provide real-life workspaces and resources like those found within the industry. All our workshops are designed in accordance with the requirements of CITB and awarding bodies. I m grateful to the Robertson Group who gave me an excellent opportunity to further my understanding of how design and construction works in the real world and the fast paced decision making required to ensure a job runs smoothly. SPOTLIGHT JORDAN CHARTERS // APPRENTICE There s not much Jordan hasn t accomplished after completing his third year at Edinburgh College on the Painting & Decorating modern apprenticeship. Juggling long hours in the college workshops with an on site apprenticeship at his dad s painting and decorating firm, Jordan strongly believes that the course was the right path for him. I left school with five Highers and I could ve gone to university but I wanted to go straight into the world of employment and give myself a good kick start. I m not really a sit-down-andrevise kind of guy but I did want the opportunity to open doors into the industry. I would love to become a specialist in many aspects of the painting trade, particularly marbling, graining and gold leafing, which I am learning every day. I also intend to run my own business one day. The structure of the college term means that much time is dedicated to getting students work ready. I ve never felt restricted by class assignments or academic overload. By third year you ve got even more opportunity to specialise with your Advanced Craft module so the list is endless. Named as the centre s apprentice of the year for the last two years and winning a College Recognition Award, Jordan has taken his skill sets to major industry competitions and has had great success. The latest win, saw Jordan achieve a bronze medal in the UK s Crown Apprentice Painter & Decorators competition in Birmingham. Jordan said his progression in competition has been exciting and he is learning at every stage. His success was also helped at college when it came to course studies in decorative work. He was also able to pass on his experience to his classmates as well as talk about typical barriers to learning such as problem solving. My success should inspire new apprentices to achieve their goals, whatever level that may be but also show apprentices undertaking competition what can be achieved. JORDAN CHARTERS APPRENTICE
