Rotary is Service Above Self Greenbelt Restoration Your flakey correspondent is catching up with two meetings, January 30 and February 6, 2012, both in the category of, you shoulda been there. Let s start with the Greenbelt Restoration Foundation project led by Russ Samuels on January 28. The club paid $1500 for 12 arbitus marinas, then planted the trees with a work crew of friends, family and Rotarians President Bill Bloomfield, Bill Sauber, Eric Iverson, Jim Hunter, Wayne Nelson, Harry Keller, Anne Konie, Deb Robertson, Susan Adams, Roger Civalleri, Ken Deemer, Dan Saks, Geoff Bremer, Randy Meadors, Wade Austin, Darrell Sperber, Marc Castellani, Steve DeBaets, Larry Johnson and Duke Winser. (Don t miss Patrick Donahue s video of the event, complete with Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it s off to work we go. ) Legacies President Bill celebrated the birthday of President Ronald Reagan with a set of his famous quotations, after which we were reminded of Bill s father s anti-smoking billboard on Santa Monica Blvd. just east of the 405. Bob Stephenson told a Bill Bloomfield Sr. story that our President Bill had never heard: he went to Rotary clubs and offered to match 50-50 a Paul Harris fellowship for any Rotarian who quit smoking. President Bill also announced that India has now been officially proclaimed polio-free. New Members and A Paul Harris Fellow We inducted two new members in two weeks: Mark Lipps, sponsored by Kathleen Terry, and Jason Wallace, sponsored by Jim Hunter. (Has anyone told them that they have to know all our names by next week?) Jim Hunter awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship to Manhattan Beach school teacher and Hometown Fair board member Carol Hugunin, wife of John Hugunin, while at the same time John and Carol made a major gift to the Rotary Foundation, making John our club s fourth major donor to RI ($10K or more). Members On The Run Barbara Matles travel agency has merged with the Travel Store and will now be known as the Robinson Travel Store (same convenient location) Larry Johnson continues his good work with Wells Bring Hope in Western Africa.Rich Ham s Rotary Guatemala stoves project has 15 stoves installed and the rest almost done..russ

Rotary is Service Above Self Samuels managed a week of snowboarding without injury.mauricio Salazar has 20 years service with United/ Continental. It is Anne Konie who processes those birthday and anniversary cards we all get from President Bill..Dave Long announced that Barbara Matles has signed up as a $500 Magic In Giving sponsor.tom Jeffry thanked Donn Ennis for his last-minute coverage of Tom s Rotary Reads time slot..shannon Ryan s final printing of her children s books on financial literacy is done..les Silverman has been appointed to the Mira Costa High School Bond Oversight Committee..Ray Padilla s daughter was part of still another Mira Costa Model UN regional first-place finish. Mystery Rotarians Richard Ham has run several half-marathons, nearly died in 1978 while riding out a Caribbean hurricane in a 32-foot boat, and lost his home to a fire in 2003 Wayne Nelson taught skiing, did cryptography in the Army, has a close friend who spent over 7 years in a POW camp, and works with his daughter. Israeli Special Forces Kathleen Adams brought us Zeev Haskal, a former Israeli special forces agent, now working locally as a security specialist. Inspired as a child by the raid on Entebbe and motivated by the attack at the Munich Olympics, this work is all Zeev ever wanted to do. He took us through his two-year selection process only one of several hundred applicants makes it to the finish. He told us that his unit included many warriors who now hold major leadership positions in Israel. Zeev s motto: The greatest pleasure in life is doing what other people say you cannot do. Palos Verdes Land Conservancy Dennis Ridge brought us Andrea Vona, Executive Director of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy (www.pvplc.org). Their mission is to preserve land, restore habitat, and provide nature education. Their work so far includes 40 miles of trails, a native plant nursery, and two nature education centers. You can find trail guides on the website. By preserving and restoring western coastal shrub habitat, they are saving threatened species and preserving a precious jewel right in our backyard.

Rotary is Service Above Self Impossible Dream Back in 1988, when our club joined a million Rotarians in the effort to eradicate polio from the planet, it looked very much like we were taking on something that could not be done. India is now polio free, and we re only a few countries short of complete eradication. It s something that would make an Israeli special forces agent proud.
