After attending high school in Listowel, Ontario she moved to Toronto. She enrolled as a student at Osgoode Hall Law School in 1921 and was called to the bar on January 21, 1926. She was appointed a King's Counsel on December 2, 1938, the second woman in the British Commonwealth to receive the honour. She practiced with Wegenast, Hyndman & Kemp, as well as Cassels, Brock & Blackwell. Cases from her legal career include the Kaufman birth control case, the "Margarine Reference" in which she appeared before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council on behalf of the Consumers' Association of Canada, and the Lavall case involving native women's loss of status after marrying nonnative men. During World War II, Hyndman organized the voluntary registration of Canadian women and was a member of and Honorary Counsel to the C.W.V.S. She was a past president of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women's Club, and in 1952 was named "Woman of the Year" for her work in getting equal pay legislation adopted in Ontario. Hyndman was also involved with Women's College Hospital, Kappa Beta Pi (the legal sorority), the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian and American Political Science Associations, and was a director of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In 1973 she was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Acadia University awarded her a Doctor of Common Law degree in 1976. In 198 Hyndman became the first honourary life member of the Advocates Society of Ontario, and in 1986 was one of the first to receive the Law Society Medal from the Law Society of Upper Canada.
