There are tastes and budget to accommodate and an equally inflexible budget. Your church community has its own story to tell through these windows, and you are willing to go through the process of creating the windows to do just that. You want to work directly with the artist to convey your every thought, knowing that this piece of art will be exactly what you want from the start of the concept until you approve that final rendering. After you complete this process you also want the knowledge that the window will be completed professionally, installed with all of the attention to expert construction practices befitting a stained glass
3 window and all that by a company that will still be there tomorrow. Associated Crafts has been in business for nearly 2 decades, with hundreds years of collective expertise and a 100% satisfaction rating. OVERVIEW OF THE PROCESS in 5 steps Step 1 The Finding Stage: Associated Crafts art department will gather measurements and photos of the space where the stained glass will go. In new construction we will look at plans and renditions of the proposed building. We will also gather information regarding the framing and the setting of the new stained glass. The next part of the finding stage is to have the studio consultant meet with the person or persons in charge of approving the design. During this meeting the studio consultant will ask questions regarding sentiments, content, colors and other aspects of the design. The studio consultant will show the client a variety of styles to help understand the clients needs. After this interview the studio consultant will select one of the skilled artist whose styles may best fit the client s desires. Step 2 Design and Renderings: The artist will then review all of the consultant s findings. The first task for the artist will be to research any symbols or Biblical scenes to be assured the design is historically correct etc. From all this information the artist will sketch out a simple pencil sketch to see if the direction is correct. Once the client accepts the direction
4 and content, the artist will complete a detailed color rendering of the exact window to be created. This rendering is then presented to the client for approval. Client and artist review rendering changes as many times as needed until the client is completely satisfied. Once the rendering is completed, the artist will show a sample of some of the glass colors and styles to be used for the churches approval. Associated Crafts takes this extra step as it is impossible for the rendering to exactly represent the glass color and texture. Step 3 Cartooning: The next step is a full size cartoon. The artist will layout the window in actual size. This cartoon is what the craftsmen will use to to build the window from. Since this is actual size to what the window is and how the sizes of glass and lead lines will be, we at Associated Crafts, yet again, go the extra mile and photograph and send the cartoon to the client so they can approve the cartoon as well. We want the customer involved so we can ensure they get the exact piece they want. Step 4 Creation: After approval of the cartoon the craftsman will cut each color of glass to match the cartoon exactly. Once all the pieces of glass are precisely cut and fit to the cartoon the artist will inspect it. If it passes the artist inspection, then the pieces of glass that need to be hand painted will be sent to the paint department to be painted. After the artist paints the pieces they are placed in a kiln and fired, making the paint
become a permanent part of the glass. After firing, the pieces are removed and returned to the cartoon. The craftsperson then assembles the new stained glass using new lead came in the profile and size selected by the artist. The size of the lead came is often an important accent to the artistic impression of a stained glass window. The joints are then soldered. Once both sides of the stained glass panel is soldered the craftsman will then brush a specially formulated cement compound in to the lead came from both side helping strengthen and weather proof the stained glass. After the panel is finished with cementing, the craftsman will then design and install a proper bracing system that will provide maximum support with minimum intervention to the art. The final step is the cleaning of the stained glass panel, readying it for installation. 4UFQ %FMJWFSZ BOE *OTUBMMBUJPO The completed panels are crated and loaded on the Associated Crafts trucks for transportation to the project site. Rescue and Repurpose A Historic Treasure WHERE TO FIND THESE WINDOWS In recent years, many churches have been faced with consolidation, closings and even choosing to remodel without adding new windows. With these events, the stained glass windows in those churches are often no longer needed. This allows for the opportunity to repurpose those windows in another church. Associated Crafts connects pre-owned windows with new locations. WHY TO USE THEM There are many reasons why churches choose to buy used windows ranging from sentiment to economy. It allows religious art to stay in religious buildings keeping memorials alive for future generations to continue to enjoy. It also allows your church to get more for their money. If you choose to pursue the heritage route of re-purposing a window, you will have several options from which to choose. With declining populations in some parts of the country, churches are closing and sending their windows to churches in the country in larger locales. Associated Crafts web service and personal attention can help you locate a church that is closing and divesting itself of its windows and have sizes and styles that can meet your needs. Using pre-owned windows is a unique opportunity in addition to the sentiment involved. Churches are often able to stretch their budgets with these pieces. They can be a much better value for the money. You can get higher quality, collectible art at much lesser costs. We specialize in all things window and church and are the best qualified to enable a church to buy the right windows.
7 Additionally, fundraising for windows becomes a very specific message as patrons are donating to support a particular window with a rich heritage. It has already been attached to another communities story so it easy to relate to and support. WHO CAN HELP While antique dealers and brokers have access to a wide range of inventory they aren t experts in the special needs of installation, restoration, and preservation of these historic treasures. We incorporate these resources into our Referral Networks to identify just the right piece while still providing the expertise on removal, framing, restoration, installation, etc. While other stained glass studios should be experts in the construction aspects of removing and reinstalling these historic treasures, very few have much experience in doing so. It takes skills in framing restoration and installation all specialties of the skilled craftsman at Associated Crafts. When discussing these options with potential vendors, ask them about each of these aspects, the number of churches for which they have performed these services, and for references.
8 WHEN TO DECIDE When is it time to decide if your church is going to use pre-owned windows? Ideally it is best to choose your windows before starting the building design. Often, historic windows are difficult to change in size without diminishing its original value. Also, by focusing on the dominant stained glass windows, you are setting a style to base the new church s construction or remodel on. Before you finalize the building drawings, buy the windows & design around the windows.
