Day One (Ch. 1) pgs. 3-13 Book Introduction: This book is called Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great by Judy Blume. Sheila and her family leave the city to spend the summer in the country in a town called Tarrytown. Sheila meets new friends, attends day camp, and takes swimming lessons. She also learns some important lessons during the summer. Day One: Today you will meet Shelia and her family. Shelia s dad comes home from work with news. Read to find out what the news is and how Sheila responds to it. *New or important words (V) equivalent (pg. 4)- equal to routine (pg. 6)- a sequence of dance steps cultural arts (pg. 10)- dealing with art, music, dance, theater, etc. Readers make predictions while they are reading. The author will end the chapter today with a cliffhanger- And then I found out about Jennifer. What do you predict this means? Who is Jennifer? Record your thoughts. Be ready to share during our discussion time. What do you think about Sheila so far? Describe Shelia s relationship with her dad. How does Sheila respond to her dad s news? How would you respond if your dad came home with news like that? Predict what you think Sheila means by And then I found out about Jennifer. Who is Jennifer?

Day Two (Ch. 2-3) pgs. 14-25 Day Two: Sheila meets Jennifer. She is not as happy with the house as she was hoping she would be. Sheila has trouble getting to sleep the first night at the new house. Read to find out why she has trouble falling asleep. *New or important words (V) adorable (pg. 14)- cute, lovable phony (pg. 20)- not real, fake poisonous (pg. 21)- full of poison, harmful Readers recognize the elements of a story as they begin a book. How would you have acted if you had to live in a boy s (or girl s) room? Why did Sheila have so much trouble getting to sleep?

Day Three (Ch. 4) pgs. 26-34 Day Three: Sheila meets a new friend named Mouse Ellis. They talk and then go to Mouse s house. Later they sign up for day camp. Read to find out what they think about the camp. *New or important words (V) maniac (pg. 28)- fanatic, very enthusiastic about something register (pg. 32)- sign up for genius (pg. 33)- very smart Readers make inferences to better understand characters motives. In today s reading, Sheila meets a new friend but ends up telling the friend several lies. What lies does Sheila tell? Why do you think Sheila would lie to her new friend? Explain. Be ready to share during our discussion time. What do you think about Mouse? What should Sheila call herself? What lies did Sheila tell Mouse? Why do you think she lied to Mouse? How would you feel if your new friend lied to you? Do you think Sheila and Mouse will be good friends? Explain.

Day Four (Ch. 5) pgs. 35-44 Day Four: Sheila s mom insists that Sheila take swimming lessons. Sheila does not want to. Read to find out how her first lesson goes. *New or important words (V) unreasonable (pg. 36)- not reasonable, not fair sulked (pg. 37)- moped, being in a bad mood champion (pg. 44)- titleholder, winner Readers make connections to characters to better relate to those characters. Today in your reading, Sheila is going to have her first swimming lesson. She does not want to learn how to swim. Answer these questions when you finish reading: Why doesn t Sheila want to learn how to swim? What have you NOT wanted to do? Explain the situation and tell why you didn t want to. Be ready to share during our discussion. How do you think Mouse will respond now that she knows Sheila was lying about knowing how to swim? How would you respond? Describe Sheila s first swimming lesson. Why doesn t Sheila want to learn to swim? When did you learn to swim? What have you not wanted to do? Explain.

Day Five (Ch. 6-7) pgs. 45-55 Day Five: Mouse comes over and tries to talk to Sheila about being truthful when you can t do something. Sheila continues to take swimming lessons. Mouse tells Sheila something that gets her scared at night. Read to find out what Mouse tells her. *New or important words (V) hollered (pg. 45)- yelled necessary (pg. 48)- needed, required drapes (pg. 50)- curtains Readers make connections to characters to better relate to those characters. Today in your reading, Mouse tries to talk to Sheila about telling the truth. On pg. 45, she says, If a person doesn t know how to do something a person should just admit it, don t you think? After you read, answer these questions: Does Sheila admit to Mouse when she doesn t know how to do something? Explain. When have you not wanted to admit that you didn t know how to do something? Explain. Be ready to share during our discussion. What do Mouse and Sheila talk about? Does Sheila admit that she doesn t know how to swim? Or use a yo-yo? Why? When have you not wanted to admit to someone else that you didn t know how to do something? Is Mouse a good friend? Explain. How are Sheila s swim lessons going? What do you think about the Headless Horseman?

Day Six (Ch. 8) pgs. 56-64 Day Six: Mouse comes over to hang out at Sheila s house. They call Sondra and Jan Van Arden to come over. They all decide to play hide-and-seek at Mouse s house. Be ready to share during our discussion. Do you think there is anything Sheila can do better than the other girls? Is it even important to do things better than others? What happened to the girls at Mouse s house? Would you have gone? When have you done something your parents said not to do or gone somewhere your parents said not to go? What happened? How did Sheila act like a boss in the chapter today? Did anyone else notice her bossiness?

Day Seven (Ch. 9) pgs. 65-75 Day Seven: Sheila has been enjoying day camp. She decides to write and print her own newspaper. Read to find out some of the challenges she faces. *New or important words (V) kiln (pg. 66)- a furnace or oven for baking and drying pottery committee (pg. 68)- group of people who work together to get a job done mimeograph (pg. 72)- an machine used before copiers; it forced ink through a stencil onto paper Readers pick out the main points of a chapter to help them remember the most important things that happened. After you read today, write down three important events that happened in this chapter. Be ready to share during our discussion time. What motivates Sheila to start the newspaper? What challenges does she face while writing and printing her paper? What motivates her to keep going despite the hardships? What did you think about Sheila s newspaper? What are three important events that happened in this chapter? Why did you pick those events?

Day Eight (Ch. 10) pgs. 76-86 Day Eight: Sheila discovers that the dog Jennifer has a new friend that visits at night. One day, Sheila and Mouse are playing with the yo-yo, and Jennifer s new friend comes. Read to find out how Sheila reacts. *New or important words (V) forecaster (pg. 77)- someone who tells about the weather before it happens hives (pg. 81)- itching spots caused by an allergic reaction litter (pg. 83)- the babies born to an animal at the same time Readers pick out the main points of a chapter to help them remember the most important things that happened. What happens with Sheila and the dogs? In this chapter on pg. 82, Mouse says, Sheila, if a person is scared of something a person should just admit it. Don t you think so? She has said something like this before. Why doesn t Sheila admit when she is scared? What will happen to Sheila and Mouse s friendship if Sheila keeps lying? What did you think of the letter from the Egrans? What events did you pick from the chapter? Let s write them into a summary.

Day Nine (Ch. 11-12) pgs. 87-99 Day Nine: The kids from the day camp put on a production of Peter Pan. Libby plays Captain Hook while Sheila decorates and holds scenery. Meanwhile, Sheila makes progress during her swimming lessons. Read to find out what she does. *New or important words (V) scenery (pg. 88)- structures used on a stage as the background during a performance disgusting (pg. 89)- gross, horrible explode (pg. 98)- burst, blow up Readers pick out the main points of a chapter to help them remember the most important things that happened. Day Ten (Ch. 13) pgs. 100-117 Day Ten: Shelia has a slumber party with Mouse, Sondra, and Jane. They decide to make a Slam Book which ends up being a horrible mistake. Later, they try to get back at Libby and her friend Maryann by putting toothpaste on the seat of the toilet. Read to find out what happens in the morning. *New or important words (V) slumber party (pg. 100)- party when friends spend the night embarrassing (pg. 103)- awkward, uncomfortable expression (pg. 105)- the look on your face Readers make inferences to better understand characters motives. Today, Sheila thinks to herself: Sometimes I think I am really two people. I am the only one who knows sheila tubman. Everyone else knows only SHEILA THE GREAT (pg. 105). Infer why Sheila never lets anyone know the real her. Do people know the real you? Explain. Be ready to share during our discussion time. Why was the Slam Book a terrible idea? Sometimes being totally honest really hurts someone else. How can we be honest without being mean but also without lying? Why doesn t Sheila let people know the real her? Do people know the real you? Day Eleven (Ch. 14) pgs. 118-124 Day Eleven: Shelia and her friends go on a hayride. Read to find out what scares Sheila on the ride. *New or important words (V) concentrate (pg. 121)- focus on something intently Readers visualize while they read which allows them to create a picture in their head of what is going on in the story. Today while you read, sketch a picture of a scene from the chapter that you can visualize. Under your picture, include a sentence that describes the picture. Be ready to share during our discussion time. What different things is Sheila scared about on the hayride? Do you think her friends know she is scared? Explain. What picture did you sketch? Why? What questions do you still have that you are hoping are answered in the last two chapters of the book?

Day Twelve (Ch. 15-16) pgs. 125-138 Day Twelve: Shelia takes her final swimming test. Her family has a Farewell party because they are leaving Tarrytown. They invite all their new friends. Read to find out how the party goes. *New or important words (V) tread water (pg. 126)- to stay afloat in the water while moving your legs in a walking motion confidence (pg. 127)- belief, trust combination (pg. 137)- mixture, blend At the end of the book, readers think about how characters have changed throughout the book. Make a 2-column chart. Label one column: Sheila- Beginning and the other column: Sheila- End. Fill in the chart by describing what Sheila was like at the beginning of the book and what Sheila was like at the end of the book. Then answer this question: How has Sheila changed throughout this book? Be ready to share during our discussion time. What happened during Sheila s swim test? Did she finally overcome her fear of the water? How was the party? Do you think Sheila will overcome her fear of dogs? Explain. What was Shelia like at the beginning of the book?
