So, from initial research, reasons Why I would like to be a Biomedical Equipment Technician include. 1) The perceived job satisfaction of BMETS. (pay, work schedule, rewarding work/big picture/meaning) 2) Working hands on with technology. 3) The projected future growth of the field. 4) Variety of employers (hospital systems, OEMs, third party service provider) 5) Opportunities for certification and specialization.
What I learned taking The class activities: BMT 111 1)Field trip to Accuserve, Inc. 2)Field trip to Presbyterian Medical Center 3)Field trip to Novant Logistics Center 4)Class visit from Crothall Healthcare reinforced my decision to pursue Biomedical Equipment Technology as a career.
Field Trip to Accuserve, Inc Was a good introduction to the biomedical equipment calibration services that Accuserve provides its customers. - Pulse oximeter testing and calibration - Infusion pump testing and calibration This experience showed me that with technical expertise and an entrepreneurial mindset it is possible to start a small business in the biomedical field.
Field Trip to Presbyterian Medical Center Good introduction to the hospital work environment. Provided good insight on the day to day duties of Biomedical Equipment Technicians. - Such as prioritization and time management between work orders and scheduled preventative maintenance. It was also encouraging to see and hear from Biomedical Equipment Technicians who were career changers that were satisfied with their new career choice. (Mrs. Frances Frye and Mr. Russell Evans)
Field Trip to Logistics Center Good opportunity to interface with a senior level Biomedical Equipment Technician, Mr. Jeremy Collins. Mr. Collins emphasized the importance of networking as being an important skill for a Biomedical Equipment Technician to have as more medical equipment is being integrated with information technology systems. Lastly, Mr. Collins provided good advice in regard to building rapport with the nursing staff in the hospital, stating, nurses will be your biggest customer and having them familiar with you will make your job easier when searching for equipment to PM.
Class visit from Crothall Healthcare This visit was a good opportunity to hear from individuals(mr. Codi Nelson, Mrs. Helen Jones, and Mr. Richard Eliason) who were all at different career stages who have held a range of positions available to Biomedical Equipment Technicians. It was also encouraging to hear about Crothall s emphasis on professional development and how they provide time for technicians to study for certification exams and reward their employees for achieving certification. Lastly, some helpful take-aways Mrs. Jones provided included 1) not overthinking problem, 2) not being afraid to call tech support when needed, and 3) how training equipment users to do simple trouble shooting before calling Biomedical can save everyone time.
How did I change during the course? The experiences in the course encouraged and reinforced my choice to continue to pursue biomedical equipment technology. Maybe I will have a better perspective of personal change at the end of the program.
Ideas to Improve the Course Full Semester Experience The first half could include simple brief hands on introductions to specific biomedical equipment. The second half should be kept as is with field trips and assignments.
