COLLECTION Papers, 1947-1975 2.5 Linear Feet Accession Number 312 The papers of The Detroit Surgical Association were placed in the Wayne State University Archives in March of 1974 and June of 1975 by Gaylord S. Bates, M.D., and were opened for research in August of 1975. The Detroit Surgical Association was organized in 1947 by a group of local surgeons. The object of the society was to further resident surgical training in the city's hospitals. This was accomplished through a combination of a social and scientific meeting which took place monthly throughout the academic year. Resident as well as practicing surgeons were encouraged to present papers on a variety of medical topics relating to surgery. Following the presentation, discussion would follow in which all would participate. Numerous new surgical techniques were thus disseminated among the general membership. Beginning in 1949, the association began presenting an honorary medal to guest speakers who were invited to present talks at the annual banquet. The guest received the title, Theodore McGraw Lecturer, and a bronze medal commemorating the occasion. Theodore McGraw was a founder of the Detroit College of Medicine, later Wayne State University School of Medicine, and his memory was a significant moving force behind the Detroit Surgical Association. The papers of the Detroit Surgical Association reflect both the administrative and pedagogical activities in which it participated. Important Subjects covered in the collection are: Theodore McGraw Theodore McGraw Medal Charles G. Johnston
