HISTORY The Klondike Gold Rush was a migration by an estimated 100,000 prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in north-western Canada between 1896 and 1899. Gold was discovered here on August 16, 1896 and, when news reached Seattle and San Francisco the following year, it triggered a "stampede" of would-be prospectors. The journey proved too hard for many and only between 30,000 and 40,000 managed to arrive. Some became wealthy, but the majority went in vain and only around 4,000 struck gold. The Klondike Gold Rush ended in 1899 after gold was discovered in Nome, prompting an exodus from the Klondike. CAMPOREE Patrols will, like the prospectors of old, using Scouts as sled dogs, will blaze a trail of adventure earning, gold when successful in using their heads, Scouting skills and teamwork to surmount the obstacles they encounter. Patrols must number no less than 4 Scouts and no more than 8. Each patrol Dog Team with Scouts acting as Huskies is a separate expedition, following a course as shown on a map provided to the Patrol Leader. A practical problem involving Scout skills will be encountered at each stop on the map. POINTS will be awarded according to how well the patrol works out the problem. Patrols are expected to visit ALL stations and must do so if they wish to search for the GOLD BARS Visits to stations are first-come, first-served. Stations award different numbers of points for successful solutions. BE PREPARED There is no bad weather, just bad choices in CLOTHING! Klondike is an exercise in coping with conditions as you find them. The Scout Handbook explains what to wear and suggests layers so Scouts can adjust to cold, activity and dampness. Dress to be dry, don t be so active and covered that you sweat; remove and replace layers as needed for comfort. Waterproof boots and two layers of socks protect the feet. NO tennis or other low-cut shoes! Mittens are warmer than gloves and both should be covered by a water repellant shell. Scouts who, in the judgment of Health & Safety officers, are improperly clothed and equipped will be removed from the course. FIRST AID will be available by radio in all areas of Klondike. Contact any staff member for assistance SLEDS are required! Plans for patrol-made sleds are available on line and make a great pre- Klondike project. Patrols with homemade sleds will collect a bonus of 25 nuggets. Store-bought sleds may be used but will collect no bonus. PATROL EQUIPMENT will be inventoried at the start of the course and must be on the sled through the course. Complete list bonus: 20 nuggets! Compass Patrol Flag 4 Staves 6 length of knot tying rope per Scout
1 20 length of rope Matches First Aid kit, including triangular bandages and splints Blanket Scout Handbook Clipboard, pencil, paper At least 1 gallon of drinking water Tarp 1 2 qt. pot for boiling water Replacement clothing for patrol members The Patrol Leader may elect to carry additional items. KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH TRAIL HIGHLGHTS POINTS ABOUT POINTS Points scored on the Gold Rush Trail and from the sled check will be used in two ways: 1. The top three patrol scores will determine the first, second and third place winners of the Klondike. 2. The scores, augmented by the Leader s Gold Bonus, will be used at the Famous Klondike Auction. Leader s Gold Bonus will not be used in any way to affect Klondike winners calculations. SCAT N TRACK Patrol team will identify animals of the forest by examining scat and tracks. Points for success. SAM MAGEE S TRAIL begins with a mush toward the Dawson gold strike. Your patrol will encounter an injured prospector. Being decent folk, you will assess his injuries and treat them properly. He must be moved from the frigid cold to a shelter which you constructed and be warmed with hot chocolate. This exercise requires Scout skills and great leadership. MAKE A CLAIM! You find gold and must stake a claim. The claim must be a square, 50 feet to the side. Having staked the square, you raise your patrol flag at least 10 feet above ground.
YOU HAVE GOLD to take to the assay office, but the river is swollen with the spring melt and the patrol must cross with its sled, its gear and all of its members. YOUR PATROL IS HUNGRY! Bringing down big game would help. At the RIFLE RANGE the patrol s top two shooters get 5 shots each to score a total of 150 points and get that Bull Moose. KEEP YOUR BALANCE! The river is rough and your raft could tip and spill your patrol and its sled into the frigid water. Scouts get themselves and the sled onto the raft, balance it and keep the balance for 5 minutes. UP A ROPE! Four (4) members of the patrol must go up the rope to the mark. Any method that works. THAT MOOSE WAS TASTY, but a couple of geese would fill the larder. The patrol s top two shooters get 4 shots each to score 100 points and take the honkers home. ALL SCORES MUST BE TURNED IN TO THE KLONDIKE OFFICE BT 5:30 PM GOLD BARS! Train robbers were pursued by the RCMP and lost the gold bars they stole. After finishing all of the stations on the GOLD RUSH TRAIL, patrols turn in their point scores and get a GPS coordinate for one of the missing gold bars. Find it and add 500 points to your score. Gold bars are numbered anyd you can only get credit for the bar assigned to your patrol. Gold bars must be turned into the Klondike office by 7:00 pm to obtain credit. LEADER S GOLD/ TROOP BONUS Leaders can earn Bonus Points by: Running an event station = 100 points Help in the dining hall kitchen or clean up = 50 points per meal Establish and maintain a warming fire = 50 points
SPEND THEM NUGGETS! THE FAMOUS KLO NDIKE AUCTION begins at 8:00 PM. It features loads of camping equipment, a free weekend at a Beaumont lodge, and other neat stuff patrols will like to have. The Patrol Leader bids for the patrol using the points earned on the Gold Rush Trail by that patrol. NO NUGGET SHARING BETWEEN PATROLS PERMITTED!
