Supplies Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle http://www.annkelle.com/tutorial-childrens-apron/ ½ yard fabric (apron skirt and bib pocket) Fat quarter fabric (bib and apron skirt pockets) ¼ yard fabric (neck straps, waist straps, and waistband) Sewing Machine, Thread, Scissors, Pins, Ruler, Rotary Cutter and Mat (optional) Cut Fabric Apron Skirt (Remix Dot in Red fabric) 1-14 x 42 rectangle for Apron Skirt 2 pocket pieces (template included) for Bib Pocket Bib (Remix Flowers in Primary fabric) 2-8½ wide x 7 high rectangles for Apron Bib Front & Back 2 - pocket pieces (template included) for Apron Skirt Pocket 7 Straps and Waistband (Kona in Corn Yellow fabric) 8 ½ 2 3 x 42 strips for Waist Straps and Neck Straps 2 2½ x 16½ strips for Waistband

Make Pockets With right sides together, sew 2 pocket fabrics together using a ¼ seam allowance. When sewing around the pocket pieces, be sure to leave a 2-3 opening on the top to turn the pocket right side out. Clip the corners and notch the curves, or use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance. 2 3 opening for turning Turn the pocket right side out. When turning the pocket right side out, push the corners out so they are completely pushed out and press. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 2

Topstitch across the top of the pocket. Repeat for the 2 nd pocket. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 3

Make Straps Fold the short ends on one of the 3 x 42 strips over ¼ to the wrong side and press. Fold the strip in half with wrong sides together down the length and press. Open back up and fold each long side toward the middle crease with wrong sides together and press again. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 4

Fold the whole strip in half and press. Top stitch the open side closed. Cut the strap in half to form 2 straps. Repeat for the 2 nd 3 x 42 strip of fabric to create a total of 4 strap pieces: 2 each waist straps and 2 each neck straps. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 5

Attach Pockets Attach bib pocket to bib Center the bib pocket on one of the bib pieces and pin it in place. Starting at the top right side of the pocket, sew around the pocket piece continuing across the bottom of the pocket and back up the left side. Do not sew across the top of the pocket. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam. Attach skirt pocket to apron skirt On the 14 x 42 apron skirt rectangle, measure 9 from the left side and 5 ½ down from the top and place the top left corner of the apron pocket piece here. Pin the pocket in place and stitch around the curved edge of the skirt pocket as done for the bib pocket. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 6

Make the Apron Bib On the right side of the bib fabric with the bib pocket, place the outer edge of the cut end of a neck strap ½ in from each side at the top of the bib fabric. Pin. Baste the straps in place along the top of the bib if desired. Place the two bib pieces right sides together and pin along the sides and top. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 7

Sew around the sides and top of the bib with a ¼ seam allowance, leaving the bottom of the bib completely open and making sure that the straps stay in between the two pieces. Turn the bib right side out and press. Set aside. Make the Apron Skirt Hem the apron skirt Fold the bottom long side of the 14 x 42 apron skirt fabric over ¼ with wrong sides together and press. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 8

Fold another ½ and press again. Sew the hem in place. Repeat for the sides of the apron skirt fabric. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 9

Gather the top of the apron skirt Using a 1/8 seam allowance, sew a line of basting stitches at the top of the apron skirt. Sew a second row of basting stitches ¼ away from the first row. Pull on the bobbin threads to gather the skirt until it is about 13 long. Make and attach the waistband Place the cut end of the waist straps along the center of the short edges of one waistband piece with right sides together. Pin or baste in place. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 10

Place the remaining waistband piece on top of the first waistband piece so that right sides are together. Pin along the short sides and sew the short sides together using a ¼ seam allowance. This will secure the waist straps in place. The waistband pieces now form a circle. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 11

Align the raw edges of the gathered apron skirt in between the right sides of the waistband circle and pin it in place. Sew together across the top using a 5/8 seam allowance being sure to keep the waist straps out of the seam. Fold the waistband up over the gathered edge of the apron skirt so that the waistband pieces are now wrong sides together and press. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 12

Turn under the top edge of the waistband pieces ¼ to the wrong side and press. Assemble the apron Fold the waistband in half to find the center and mark with a pin. Fold the bib piece in half to find the center and mark with a pin. Place the bottom raw edge of the bib in between the waistband pieces and match center marks. Pin the waistband pieces together with the bib sandwiched in between. Child s Apron Tutorial for Ann Kelle 13

Using a 1/8 seam allowance, sew along the top edge of the waistband first to secure the bib. Continue topstitching around the entire waistband.
