Remve the jker cards. OPENING PRAYER THE LESSON OPENING QUESTION Here s the pening questin fr tday s class. I [the teacher] will ask the questin and then t give yu sme time t think f an answer, I will answer first. Once I answer the questin, we ll g arund the circle. When it s yur turn, start with yur name and then answer the questin t the best f yur ability. Here is this week s questin: What s a skill that smene else has that yu wuld als like t have? TRANSITION TO Vide Clip Last week, we read the stry f Pentecst Since this week s stry is really a cntinuatin f the Pentecst stry, we re ging t watch a vide clip that captures the verall feel fr what s happening fr the disciples. And t be hnest, it is nt very easy t find a mvie clip that summarizes what the disciples are ging thrugh in this Pentecst stry. The best clip I culd find/think f was used in a lessn frm last year, frm the Karate Kid remake (http://www.rfur.rg/pagems390.html). But, I try t nt re-use vide clips, s -- if the internet has taught me anything, that when in dubt use cute animals! S here s we g a brief vide clip abut a dg wh is transfrmed 1 This material is the cpyrighted prperty f rfur.rg. It is als free. Please use, imprve and share this material. WATCH Vide clip Where was Tbey the dg living? (a shelter) What kind f shelter? (a high-kill shelter) Lking all beat-up and scraggly mstly desn t make a dg very attractive t smene lking t adpt a dg s what was the dg given? (a make-ver: a bath, haircut, and bandana) D yu think the dg lked better afterwards? And what happened t the dg after the makever? (was adpted sn after) S, d yu think this was a life-saving event, then? (yes) S, a happy ending and nt dissimilar t (ur friends) the disciples. The disciples ften acted like the dg lked in the beginning f the clip. They were a little shaky. A little rugh arund the edges. A little unsure f themselves. But then Jesus prvided sme instructin and lving care, first as a teacher, then again during the Resurrectin perid. And it changed / transfrmed the disciples t the pint where, as we saw in last week s stry, they were acting very differently in a way that attracted the attentin f lts f ther peple. They didn t d it in a cute way, they weren t like the dg wh lked better and therefre attracted his new wner s attentin in a physical h hw cute srt f way. But they DID attract the attentin f thers because f hw they had been changed. In a lt f ways, this week s stry is a cntinuatin f last class stry f Pentecst. Because, as yu ll see, the disciples are still acting very differently and attracting peple s attentin because f it. Let s see what happens READ Acts 3:1-11; 4:1-4, 18-22 (recmmend class reads it ut lud; ne persn per verse, including teachers) 3:1 One day Peter and Jhn were ging up t the temple at the hur f prayer, at three clck in the afternn. 2And a man lame frm birth was being carried in. Peple wuld lay him daily at the gate f the temple called the Beautiful Gate s that he culd ask fr alms frm thse entering the temple. 3When he saw Peter and Jhn abut t g int the temple, he asked them fr alms. 4Peter lked intently at him, as did Jhn, and said, Lk at us. 5And he fixed his attentin n them, expecting t receive smething frm them. 6But Peter said, I have n silver r gld, but what I have I give yu; in the name f Jesus Christ f Nazareth, stand up and walk. 7And he tk him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strng. 8Jumping up, he std and began t walk, and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising Gd. 9All the peple saw him walking and praising Gd, 10and they recgnized him as the ne wh used t sit and ask fr alms at the Beautiful Gate f the temple; and they were filled with wnder and amazement at what had happened t him. 11While he clung t Peter and Jhn, all the peple ran tgether t them in the prtic called Slmn s Prtic, utterly astnished. 2 This material is the cpyrighted prperty f rfur.rg. 4:1 While Peter and Jhn were speaking t the peple, the priests, the captain f the temple, and the Sadducees came t them, 2much annyed because they were teaching the peple and prclaiming that in Jesus there is the resurrectin f the dead. 3S they arrested them and put them in custdy until the next day, fr it was already evening. 4But many f thse wh heard the wrd believed; and they numbered abut five thusand. 18S they [the Jewish rulers, elders, and scribes] called them [Peter and Jhn] and rdered them nt t speak r teach at all in the name f Jesus. 19But Peter and Jhn answered them, Whether it is right in Gd s sight t listen t yu rather than t Gd, yu must judge; 20fr we cannt keep frm speaking abut what we have seen and heard. 21After threatening them again, they let them g, finding n way t punish them because f the peple, fr all f them praised Gd fr what had happened. 22Fr the man n whm this sign f healing had been perfrmed was mre than frty years ld. Verse 3:1 Where did Peter and Jhn g? (t the Temple) What d yu suspect they were planning t d there? (pray due t it being the hur f prayer) What can the man in 3:2 nt d? (walk; he is carried by thers) Verse 4:22 Hw ld is the man? (mre than 40 yrs ld his age is given t help us knw that this man is nt faking it he s been ding this his whle, lng life) What is the man asking peple fr? (alms / handuts / mney) Verse 3:6-7 What des Peter ffer the man instead f gld r silver? (healing; walking) Des it surprise yu t see Peter and Jhn were able t heal like Jesus did? Why/why nt? Verse 9 and 11 Hw des the man respnd? (excited / jumps arund; praises Gd; clings t Peter and Jhn) Verse 3:10-11 and 4:4 Hw d the peple (aka the crwd) respnd t what s happened? (wnder, amazement, astnished, and abut 5k believed ) See first cmment in the sectin abut believing Verse 4:2, we haven t heard much abut the Sadducees they were less excitable than the Pharisees, in general, it seems, but they are a sectin f the Jewish religius leaders. Accrding t the Gspels and Acts, it seems that the main thing that gets them riled up is resurrectin. They maintained that there was n type f resurrectin -- n the last day r therwise. S why d they arrest Peter and Jhn? (fr talking t the peple abut resurrectin) What d yu think D yu agree with the arrest f Peter and Jhn? Why? Verse 4:18 What d the religius leaders tell Peter and Jhn? (T stp teaching abut Jesus) Verse 4:19 In respnse t the leaders, Peter and Jhn say they will bey smene ther than the religius leaders wh d they say they are ging t bey? (Gd) Verse 4:21 What d the religius leaders d t Peter and Jhn (let them g because they are afraid f the peple) What d yu think will the religius leaders leave Peter, Jhn, and the ther disciples alne nw? In verse 4:4, it says that 5000 believed. First, let s be clear that these peple are Jews wh already believe that Gd exists and they mstly share the same beliefs as the disciples d. S when it says that they believed, what the stry is trying t tell us is that the peple are smehw believing in Peter and Jhn meaning, they find what Peter and Jhn are teaching and ffering abut Gd t be better/mre attractive than what the religius leaders are ffering. In ther wrds, they want t learn what Peter and Jhn are teaching. 3 This material is the cpyrighted prperty f rfur.rg. It is als free. Please use, imprve and share this material. But d nt ever pay fr it, sell it r require r give any persnal infrmatin fr it

S last lessn, we saw hw Pentecst was really the disciples finally understanding what Jesus had been teaching them and they then receive Gd s Hly Spirit. In ther wrds, the disciples were changed even mre than the dg was in the vide we watched. And in tday s stry, we see the result f that change: The disciples start t d the same things that Jesus did. They heal peple A crwd gathers arund them Frm the crwd, individuals chse t becme disciples The religius leaders get upset In ther wrds, the cycle f Jesus ministry is starting all ver, nly this time, instead f there just being ne teacher (Jesus), there are a bunch f teachers (the riginal disciples). T help us think a little bit mre abut this prcess that the disciples g thrugh and then repeat, we re ging t d the fllwing activity called Thirty-ne. (r thirty-tw if we have mre than 6 peple playing r thirty-three if we have mre than 10 peple playing). EXPLAIN ACTIVITY We re ging t play a card game called, Thirty-ne The gal f the game is t get the highest scre in the rund faster than anyne else. Here s hw yu d that: Everyne is dealt three cards Yu may lk at them, but yu dn t want t shw them t anyne else Dealer then flips ver a card frm the draw pile (ie the rest f the cards). That flipped-ver card is the start f the discard pile Persn t the left f the dealer ges first they can d 1 f 3 things. 1. Pick a card frm the draw pile and then discard a card frm their hand (yu may nly hld 3 cards never mre r less) 2. Pick the card up frm the discard pile and then discard a different card 3. Knck n the table/playing surface If the persn kncks, what they are saying is that they will nt be taking a card, because they think they have a higher hand than everyne else. Hwever, play will cntinue until it is nce again the turn f the persn wh kncked. At that pint everyne will lay dwn their hand and cmpare pints. Mre abut pints in a mment. S, n matter what happened with the first player, play cntinues t the left. The next persn can d ptins 1, 2, r 3 as well, unless the previus persn kncked, then there s n reasn t knck again. Als, and this is imprtant, knw that yu can ONLY grab the tp card n the discard pile Hw pints wrk: Each card is wrth the number that is n it, except the ace the ace is wrth 11 pints. All face cards are wrth 10 pints T be able t add the pints f the cards tgether, they must be the same suit (the shapes n the cards must be the same) The highest scre yu can get, then is 31 (an ace and tw face cards) [Nte: If yu play with mre than ne deck, yu have t change the name f the game t 32 r 33 because there s the pssibility f getting mre than ne ace at that pint] 4 This material is the cpyrighted prperty f rfur.rg. It is als free. Please use, imprve and share this material. But d nt ever pay fr it, sell it r require r give any persnal infrmatin fr it

If n ne kncks befre 4 times arund the circle, then we ll lay dwn ur cards after ging arund the circle 4 times. We ll play a few runds. Once yu get the hang f it, the game shuld g pretty quickly. It s really fairly simple. Any questins? DO CARD GAME Fr thse f yu wh kncked, why did yu feel cnfident enugh t knck? (hpefully they say smething abut hlding a gd hand) Fr thse f yu wh didn t knck, why didn t yu feel cnfident enugh t knck? Let s think abut tday s scripture stry, in the cntext f this card game. What we saw in tday s stry is that the disciples finally have a gd set f cards they finally have a gd hand. They are finally cnfident enugh t knck, put their cards dwn, and shw the wrld what they have. And the three matching cards that they have that are giving them the cnfidence t knck are: 1. The chice t be a disciple/learn frm Jesus 2. That led t the experience f ging thrugh the crucifixin AND resurrectin 3. That led t greater trust Gd and receiving Gd s Hly Spirit S then, after they shw everyne their hand, sme f the peple say Nice hand! Other peple said, B! Then, the cycle starts ver again. A new rund begins. The disciples nw have their wn disciples, abut 8,000 r s (accrding t the numbers frm this stry and the stry frm the last lessn) and the religius leaders are already shwing their dislike / resistance twards the disciples, just like they did t Jesus. The reasn I pint ut this cycle is because that s hw it still wrks tday: Chse t be a disciple / learn abut and frm Jesus Experience setbacks and new life frm this decisin Learn frm experience t trust Gd enugh t fllw Gd s prmptings Eventually, yu ll find yurself helping thers d the same thing Next lessn, we ll start lking at sme stries f hw that last part lks sme ther characters in the Bible wh made it t the similar stage as the disciples did. CLOSING PRAYER 5 This material is the cpyrighted prperty f rfur.rg. It is als free. Please use, imprve and share this material.
