The Heimbach family immigrated to America from Germany in the middle 18th century and settled in Pennsylvania. Branches of the family then spread through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, California, and other states. There have been many variations of the spelling of the name, among those being Hinebaugh, Heinbaugh, Hindbaugh, Haimbaugh, Hanbach, and Himebaugh. Principle author of the papers is Preston Hinebaugh (1899-1961) who was born in Germantown, Ohio, and later resided in Columbus, Ohio. Hinebaugh devoted a great amount of his life to researching, corresponding, and writing about the Heimbach family. The papers also contain some work by Ernest Earl Heimbach (d. 1968), an economics professor who was born in Columbia City, Indiana and educated and taught in and around New York City. Sources: Information obtained from collection. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The papers chiefly consist of the family history related correspondence and research of Preston Hinebaugh. Included are letters between relatives and other acquaintances regarding specific individuals and the Heimbach family in general. There are also notes and publications regarding the family's history as well as census and military records information obtained from libraries and national and state government agencies. The majority of the materials date from the 1950s, while Hinebaugh resided in Columbus, Ohio. Most of the research deals with the family in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
