For this activity you will eed to cosider which questios would best ecourage studets to thik about the choices a writer has made i a particular story, i characterisatio, laguage ad arrative structure, for example. You could give studets a list of questios to cosider, or model a few ad the let them create their ow. The example below gives ideas for questios o Somethig Old, Somethig New. What if the brother had bee friedly whe he first arrived i Khartoum? What if he was ot a Muslim? What if she was ot a divorcee? What if his camera had ot bee stole? What if her ucle had ot died? What if the Imam had ot believed he was a Muslim? 5. Quotatio Cards a. Cards could be placed i more tha oe group. Suggested headigs: love death family idetity differece violece. b. These activities ca be used as preparatory work for aalytical writig about either theme or laguage. 2 http://www.emcdowload.co.uk Eglish & Media Cetre 2013 EMC Approaches to Sulight o the Grass

6. Poit of View Use quotatio cards A-F for this activity. 8. Character Role-play ad Writig Activity The writig activity is a possible Recreatios writig task from the 2013 task bak. 10. Revisio Carousel You will eed to choose oe story for studets to work o ad to set up seve statios (tables) aroud the classroom. At each statio, put a pad of Post It otes ad a piece of sugar paper labelled with oe aspect of the stories: character; themes; structure; choice of laguage; how differet readers might respod; coectios with other stories you have studied; mood ad atmosphere. Give studets five miutes at each statio to put as may ideas as they ca oto Post Its ad stick them o the sugar paper before movig o to the ext aspect. Studets the stay at the fial statio to complete the secod part of the activity i which they develop some of the ideas o oe aspect of the story. 12. Make the Coectio If studets are strugglig, you could give them a list of possible coectios to make, for example: A story featurig the relatioship betwee a father ad his so A story i which a character chages durig the course of the story A story i which the reader chages their mid about a character durig the course of the story A story with a shockig evet A story with a happy edig A story i which a lie is importat A story with a sad edig A story with a ope edig A story featurig the relatioship betwee sibligs A story told from the poit of view of a child A story told i the first perso A story told i the third perso A story i which family relatioships are difficult A story with a grippig opeig A story with a uexpected edig A story of strog emotios A love story A story i which a secret is importat A light-hearted story. A story which leaves the reader with lots of questios. A story with vivid characters. A story domiated by paiful emotios. http://www.emcdowload.co.uk Eglish & Media Cetre 2013 EMC Approaches to Sulight o the Grass 3

15. A Few of My Favourite Thigs Some suggested categories: Which is the best character i the athology? Which is the best opeig? Which is the best edig? Which is the best setece i the athology? Which is the best story? Which writer has the best style? Which writer creates the most believable relatioship betwee characters? Which writer is the best at puttig across emotios? Which story had the most impact o you? Which story has the best structure? Which story has the most excitig climax or turig poit? Which story has the most suspese? Exam Practice 17. Past Paper Competitio For this activity you will eed some past paper questios o the athology, or questios writte i that style. 4 http://www.emcdowload.co.uk Eglish & Media Cetre 2013 EMC Approaches to Sulight o the Grass

Revisio Approaches 1. Titles The seve short stories i the prose athology are called: My Polish Teacher s Tie Whe the Wasps Drowed Compass ad Torch O Seeig the 100% Perfect Girl Oe Beautiful April Morig The Darkess Out There Ail Somethig Old, Somethig New With a parter, discuss what you ca say about the titles, usig the prompts below to help you if you wish. Thik about the words the writers have used for each title. What do they suggest to you? Do the titles give you ay ideas about the characters that might be i the stories? Do the titles give you ay ideas about the settig for the story? Havig read the story, how do you thik the title liks to the ideas explored i the text? Was the title descriptive? Misleadig? Eigmatic? Did it capture somethig of the mood? http://www.emcdowload.co.uk Eglish & Media Cetre 2013 EMC Approaches to Sulight o the Grass 5

2. Opeig Paragraphs You will be give a copy of the first paragraph of each story i the athology. Idepedetly read each opeig paragraph. As you read, thik about the followig questios: What do you otice about the style of the opeig paragraph? You could use the prompts below to help you. If you wish. Is the story writte i the first or third perso? Has the writer used dialogue? If so, how much? What ca you say about the kids of seteces the writer has used? What ca you say about the vocabulary the writer has chose? How would you describe the toe of the opeig paragraph? What themes or ideas does the opeig paragraph begi to explore? How do you feel after readig the opeig paragraph? How does the opeig paragraph help to prepare the reader for what comes later i the story? For example, does the opeig set the cotext for the reader? Are there hits about what might come ext? Does the opeig set the reader up for a surprise later? You could use the chart o page 7 to keep track of your otes. Now work with a parter. Share your overall impressios of the story opeigs, the take it i turs to suggest how the opeigs are similar to, or differet from, each other. Try to make your commets as specific as possible. For example: The opeig paragraphs of My Polish Teacher s Tie ad O Seeig the 100% Perfect Girl are similar because they are both writte i the first perso. However, the toe of each is quite differet. My Polish Teacher s Tie has a factual ad quite dow to earth toe, whereas O Seeig the 100% Perfect Girl souds a bit like the start of a fairy tale. With your parter, come up with as may similarities ad differeces as you ca for differet combiatios of stories. You could preset your ideas as a mid-map or series of Ve diagrams. The example below shows you how you might do this. Now choose the poit of similarity or differece which you thik is most iterestig. Be prepared to share this idea with the rest of the class. 6 http://www.emcdowload.co.uk Eglish & Media Cetre 2013 EMC Approaches to Sulight o the Grass

3. What if? Your teacher will tell you which story to read. Read it through oce. You ca do this idepedetly or you ca do it as a class. After you have read it, discuss the followig what if questios with a parter. What would have bee the impact o the arrative? What if x (a particular character) did somethig differet? What if the writer chose to ed the arrative at a earlier poit? Or a later poit? What if the story was writte from a differet poit of view? As a class, discuss what do you lear about the choices the writer has made ad the structure of the story by askig these questios. If you desiged your ow what if questios, discuss which prompted the most iterestig aswers. 4. Explorig Structure Put simply, most arratives follow a similar structure, explaied i the diagram o page 9. Your teacher will divide the class ito seve groups. Each group will be allocated oe story from the athology ad provided with a graph like the oe o page 9. Now try to map the key evets of the story you have bee give oto the graph. Discuss the followig questios: Does the story follow a similar structure to the covetioal oe o the graph? If ot, how is it differet? Preset your fidigs to the rest of the class. Oce you have heard each group s presetatio cosider how the structure of the stories is similar or differet? Do you otice ay patters through all the stories? Or ca you group them depedig o the kid of structure they have? How do short stories differ from full-legth ovels? How might this chage the way writers structure short stories? What challeges ad opportuities does the form preset to writers? Do you thik the short story form leds itself to explorig certai themes? Expositio (the situatio at the start of the story); Risig Actio (evets i the story which lead to the climax) Climax (the turig poit of the story) Fallig Actio (evets which follow the climax Resolutio (the coclusio of the story). 8 http://www.emcdowload.co.uk Eglish & Media Cetre 2013 EMC Approaches to Sulight o the Grass
