Introduction Seasons Greetings from the Armagh Diocesan Prayer and Spirituality Group. The Prayer and Spirituality Group organise prayer experiences and times of reflection for parish ministry groups as well as resourcing parishes with prayer and spirituality ideas and happenings. We organise Christian meditation groups and spiritual retreats. If you go to www.prayerandspirituality.com you will find a more detailed description of our work and tasks to date. The Advent booklet contains items based on the Advent Gospels (Cycle B), Christmas Day, The Holy Family and The Epiphany of the Lord. Introduction Page 3 Advent Wreath Page 4 1st Sunday of Advent Page 5,6 and 7 2 nd Sunday of Advent Page 8 and 9 3 rd Sunday of Advent Page 10 4 th Sunday of Advent Page 11, 12 and 13 Christmas Day Page 14, 15 and 16 The Holy Family Page 17 The Epiphany of the Lord Page 18 The idea of this book is to get you to find out more about the Advent Season and begin to link your ideas of Christmas with those of the Church. Colour in all the pictures with Colouring Pencils as they will not go through to the next page! 3

The word Advent means Coming and the season of Advent is a time when we WAIT for the COMING of a special baby JESUS! To help count up the weeks to Christmas, people light a candle each Sunday in Advent and place it in a circle of evergreen branches. Each candle lit is a sign of HOPE and a reminder of good things to come. The branches are evergreen showing us that God loves us always and it is in the shape of a circle to remind us that his love has no end. There are three purple candles lit; the first on week one, the next on week two and the third on week four. Purple was an expensive dye in old times and a sign of Royalty; these show us that someone very important is coming - Christ The King. Advent in the past was like Lent; people would have eaten less and prayed more to prepare for Christmas. The pink candle is lit on the third week (Gaudete Sunday) as a sign of Joy. People could break their fast for the day (like St Patrick s Day). On this day the priest would wear rose or pink coloured clothes and everyone would be a little happier. At the Christmas Eve Mass the pink and all the purple candles are lit as we arrive in Mass. During this Mass the final central white candle is lit. This candle shows us that Jesus is with us. As a sign of our waiting we will colour the candles in our booklet the same as the Advent Wreath in Church. 4

1 st Sunday of Advent (Cycle B) (Light the first advent candle by Colouring in the flame yellow and the candle purple watch the priest do the same at mass). Find out what Cycle B means......... The 1 st Sunday of Advent (Cycle B) Gospel comes from Mark 13:33-37 Find out what this means and what the numbers are, because you will come across this Code every week! Test your understanding of the Code: Go to Luke 6:27-38 Find the sentence and complete Love your... Do good to those who... you. 5

Read Mark 13:33-37 Jesus says this: Be on your guard, Stay awake for I am coming! What do you think Jesus is telling you?.......... How can you be sure to stay awake every day?............. 6

7

2 nd Sunday of Advent (Light the first and second advent candles by colouring in the flames yellow and the candles purple) Read today s Gospel (Mark 1:1-8) Prepare a way for the Lord, make his path straight. Can you compare the message in this reading with the 1 st Sunday reading?............ Saying your Act of Sorrow helps straighten the path for Jesus. Write out your Act of Sorrow below:............ 8

What does light do?... People say Jesus is like light. What do you think this means?............ Maybe this week you can be like light and make someone s life a little brighter. This may be giving a gift to St Vincent De Paul! 10

4 th Sunday of Advent (Light all of the advent candles by colouring-in all four flames yellow and three candles purple and one candle pinkyou are so close to Christmas! ) Read today s Gospel Luke 1:26-38 about Mary being told something very special. You are to have a Son and call him Jesus Mary was excited and said YES to God! Christmas Day ( At last Happy Christmas! Colour in the 4 outside candles like last week and leave the middle candle white with a yellow flame. Your candles are the same as those in church ) Read the Gospel for the Vigil Mass (you can find this in a book called The Roman Missal for Sundays and Holy Days or look it up in your Bible Luke 2:1-14. On the next page is a map of the Holy Lands. Look at all the Gospel Readings in this Advent Book and write below the Towns, Cities, Areas, Rivers, Countries and Seas mentioned. The Epiphany of The Lord Read today s Gospel Matthew 2:1-12 (more places for your map!) Epiphany is a big adult word that simply means to let know. In today s gospel God is letting people know that the baby Jesus is his Son. Draw a picture below of the scene in the Gospel. Label as many things in your picture that let you know something special has happened. 18
