EFFRA: who we are Support from Associations members

Who we are and what we do European association EFFRA explaining industry needs to public authorities mobilising private investments in European research safeguarding industrial relevance of EU-projects within the Factories of the Future programme

Who we are and what we do Why did all these organisation join EFFRA? because working with partners creates critical mass and pools expertise because the individual risk is reduced because research projects create and reinforce links to international customers

Public Private Partnerships Background What is different? joint vision development & strategic agenda setting industry-relevant roadmaps: co-operation of experts interaction between industry, SMEs, research organisations and public entities network that actively encourages new involvement transparent & accessible: o clear funding rules: open to all o easier for SMEs to get involved o strategic funding: calls relevant to industry o subject to usual FP framework regulations & mechanisms

Factories of the Future: state of the Partnership Progress since 2011 Info Day EFFRA continues to grow: 100 + participants at General Assembly 2012 now 115 members: large industry, SMEs, RTOs & Associations developing close-cooperation with the European Commission through official body called AIAG strategic roadmap - Factories of the Future 2020 - in development expanded dissemination & communication of project developments, news & key information

Factories of the Future: state of the Partnership Declaration of Commitment (sent to EU Leaders prior to the last EU Summit) Our industries are ready to enter into joint programmes and investments to develop, implement and deploy innovative solutions that will secure the sustainability and competitiveness of European industry along with the highly skilled jobs that it provides From PPP Declaration Signed at Aarhus Industrial Technologies 2012

Factories of the Future: state of the Partnership Monitoring & Assessment Database on all FoF projects in the pipe-line which looks at information from different angles: projects organisations roadmaps & their (interrelated) research priorities results, spin-offs, patents Aim: to monitor the implementation and assess the progress of the PPP

Manufacturing industries research priorities Industry s expectations of PPPs industry, not government, sets research priorities help industry to pursue their objectives faster and on a bigger scale research results should be applied in industrial environment

Factories of the Future PPP road-map Advising EC on top research priorities report with 50 priority actions grouped in four areas finalised February 2010 submitted to European Commission within an advisory group download at: www.effra.eu

Broad consensus to continue PPP beyond 2013 Workshop on PPP impact organised by European Commission March 2012 75+ project coordinators and other experts met in Commission headquarters PPP should continue More clarity on roles and responsibilities EFFRA should coordinate private sector involvement

Factories of the Future PPP Projects Result: industry re-engaged 61 projects up and running 250M of EU in 2010/11 time-to-contract 1 st call: 8.5 months statistics show industrial participation of more than 50% in FoF PPP (compared to some 20-30% for FP7) additional 400M in 2012/13 Ad-hoc Industry Advisory Group (AIAG) works well, ensures that roadmap reflects industrial needs

Factories of the Future PPP Projects trans-european consortia focus on industrial application bridge between research, development & industrial uptake includes a new concept of demotargeted projects, which attracted industry

Factories of the Future PPP New: DEMO-targeted projects increase the impact and visibility of the of the PPP results get closer to innovation activities, but still within FP7 ensure that research results developed in PPP projects are taken up by EU industry and support competitiveness increase the attractiveness of PPP projects to SMEs increase the leverage effect on private sector funding no change to FP7 definition of CP and Demonstration

Public Private Partnerships Background FPs timeline and launch of R&D PPPs EuropeanTechnology Platforms EU Framework Programmes 2002 Launch of 5 Joint Technology Initiatives Economic Recovery Plan in 2008 and creation of 3 PPPs for the automotive, construction and manufacturing sectos 2007 Research & Innovation Programme Public Private Partnership Factories of the Future (FoF) Association representing private side 2014

Factories of the Future PPP programme 4th Call (2013): on-going EU-budget of 230 million (160 from NMP, 70 from ICT) July 2012 Call topics agreed within AIAG, Programme Committee and Commission s DGs Info-Day on 9/10 July EFFRA helps in the organisation and prepares brokerage session
