CHEAT SHEET FOR LORD f the FLIES Inspiratin fr the Bk: William Glding was inspired t write this nvel when he entered the Ryal Navy in England. He saw the hrrrs f the war and believed it was caused by the evil in peple. Backgrund: The nvel begins fllwing a plane crash that leaves a grup f yung bys (aged 5 t 12) scattered thrughut a trpical island. They bys were being evacuated frm England, where an atmic war was taking place. While fleeing by plane, they are attacked and they crash int the cean. The bys behaviur reflects their prir surrundings; they act as thugh they are at war. Setting: The nvel is set n an island during WWII. This is imprtant fr TWO reasns: 1. Because it is set in the middle f a war, lcating the bys is nt a tp pririty. 2. The island, remved frm the rest f sciety, accelerates the bys descent int savagery. The glss f civilizatin is chipped away ver time, which allws the bys t give in t the darker side f their natures. The island is a very islated place with abslutely n cntact with the utside wrld. The nly way that thers culd cntact the bys is by chance if a plane r a bat happened t spt them. The island has fd, wildlife, and fresh water. The physical island is nt the cause f the bys dwnfall; their dwnfall is caused by their wn actins. The Fur Main Physical Settings f the Island: 1. The Lagn: mst civilized place n the island 2. The Muntain: salvatin might ccur here; psitive high place 3. The Jungle: rife with death and decay 4. Castle Rck: where Jack and his tribe establish themselves As yu read, lk ut fr these (there may be mre): Symbls: Cnch Beast The lrd f the flies Glasses The island Clthes Masks Scar Characters: Themes: Civilizatin vs. Savagery Human Nature Gd vs. Evil Pwer (Crruptin/Misuse) Appearance vs. Reality Lss f Inncence Leadership (r lack f) Fear Manipulatin Ralph (Demcracy/Civilizatin) Jack (savagery/darkness) Piggy (Reasn/Intellect) Simn (Christ-Like) Rger (Sadist)

THE LORD OF THE FLIES Simn as a Christ-figure An allusin is a casual reference t smething. A biblical allusin is t use an image r reference frm the Bible in everyday language t cnnect t r enhance the meaning f the text. In Lrd f the Flies, there are many biblical allusins. Fr example, there are parallels between the lives f Jesus and Simn. TASK: read the fllwing descriptins f Jesus life and write a text example that cmpares Him t Simn JESUS SIMON 1. Jesus was cnsidered different; he was ridiculed and rejected. 2. Jesus retreated frm sciety at times t meditate and pray t Gd. 3. Jesus went in t the wilderness t cnfrnt evil. He is tempted in the desert by Satan. 4. Simn was ne f Jesus disciples. Simn is a Hebrew name (Peter) meaning rck. He helped spread Jesus ministry/wrd. 5. Jesus prphesized; he fretld the future t cme in a wrld withut gd and Gd. 6. Jesus fed peple. 7. Jesus des nt fear evil because he understands the truth abut evil, fear, and human nature. 8. Befre Jesus culd reveal the wrd/truth, he was killed.

Making Inferences and Predictins Adapted frm Building Reading Cmprehensin Habits in Grades 6-12: A Tlkit f Classrm Activities, by Jeff Zwiers (2010) The mre yu infer and predict, the mre chances yu have f being right. Humans are wired t infer and predict. We watch peple s facial expressins t see hw they feel. We predict a bk s appeal by the picture n its cver. We infer that a restaurant is expensive because it has valet parking. Making an inference means cmbining infrmatin frm a text with ur wn persnal knwledge and experiences. By blending the tw, we create imprtant meanings that are nt directly stated in the text. When we rely t much n a text while making inferences, we might miss ut n a large amunt f deeper meaning. When we rely t much n ur backgrund knwledge while making inferences, we might lse the directin f the text. INFORMATION FROM TEXT INFERENCE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Inference-making invlves making an educated guess that ges beynd the authr s exact wrds r images. If an inference is crrect, we have learned smething new and this learning will be better anchred in ur brains. If an inference is incrrect, we have still learned smething new: t make a different inference in a similar situatin in future texts. T make a predictin abut future events, we use textual clues and ur backgrund knwledge in rder t help us t create meaning and predict what might happen next. We then g thrugh the text t cnfirm, discard, change, r make new predictins based n new evidence that cmes up.

TYPES f INFERENCES Text-t-Text Inferences These kinds f inferences allw us t cnnect ne part f a text t anther. Fr a particular sectin f text, ur understanding may depend n whatever came befre it. Gd readers remember what they ve read and cnnect it t what they are currently reading. Fr example, readers need t remember: characters, their traits and their relatinships; the rder f events in a text; the setting; particular causes and effects; elements f freshadwing; key vcabulary terms. Text-t-Self and Text-T Wrld Inferences When we make inferences, we cnnect the text t ur wn experience and knwledge f the wrld. Fr example, I may think f a tree in a text as a symbl f grwth. As I read n, this inference may be cnfirmed, r thrugh class discussin we might decide that the tree is actually nthing mre than a tree. QUESTIONING We can use the fllwing questins t ignite text-t-text, text-t-self, and text-t-wrld inferences: Hw des this part f the text fit int the verall text? What is the authr s purpse? What des this particular wrd mean? Hw des this event r decisin apply t my life r the wrld arund me? What if I had been in this particular situatin? What are the effects f this particular event? What are the causes? What might this character be feeling? Hw d I knw?
