SPRING S DANCE by DRAGONFLYLACE 6 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPRING S DANCE STOLE Spring s Dance is a long stole designed in the tradition of Estonian Lace. It is knitted from 3 original charts. These designs were inspired from the garden in my backyard with a Koi pond, a lovely ancient Gingko tree and of course Dragonflies. Koi Ripples is the edging for both the top and bottom. This edging is knitted with the border, Gingko Lace. The edging and border at the top of the stole are knitted separately and grafted to the body with the kitchener stitch. The body chart, Dragonfly Wings, is an all over pattern and is repeated 15 times vertically. There is a 4 stitch garter border on both sides of the stole. The stole incorporates a beautiful, traditional stitch called the nupp ; pronounced noop. This stitch adds texture to the shawl by performing YOs and knitting in the same stitch, then picking up these loose stitches in the following purl row. Please Note: Spring s Dance is a little different from the last shawl Winter s Mirage. It is less geometric and has a more overall pattern for the body of the shawl. You will see a pattern develop, but not with sharp edges. The overall pattern is in the same idea as used in some square shawls knitted in Estonia. I used alpaca for my shawl, but remember, alpaca has a halo to it (a little fuzz). So if you want sharper edges, use regular wool for your project. Instructions on How to Knit a Nupp can be found here on #22 workshop Spring s Dance. It is on the first page as a download. Look in Knitting and Crochet Workshops with Designer1234: http://www.knittingparadise.com/s-105-1.html It is suggested that you print these instructions and knit the sample chart as a practice piece. This piece will serve as not only your lesson on how to knit a nupp stitch, but will also serve as the gauge for Spring s Dance. You should repeat the chart two times vertically. This will give you a chance for practice and a good swatch for determining your gauge. Although this stole may be knitted in a variety of yarn fibers and weights, to obtain the size given, you will need a lace weight yarn and the gauge given. See page 1 for the blue gauge box. For information on how to knit a gauge swatch why it is important, please look here: http://www.knitpicks.com/tutorials/gauge D74.html A FUN STATISTIC: How many nupps are in the stole? Gingko Lace = 9 nupps / repeat x 5 repeats across = 45 x 2 borders = 90. Dragonfly Wings = 3 nupps / repeat x 5 repeats across = 15 x 15 vertical repeats = 225 For a grand total of 315 nupps. So you see, that is not too many nupps!!!

SPRING S DANCE by DRAGONFLYLACE 7 INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CHARTS KOI RIPPLES - EDGING: Cast on 143 stitches. Use the chart labeled Koi Ripples Edging. There are 5 repeats of stitches 1-27 on the edging chart. There are 4 garter border stitches on each side. These garter stitches are not show on the charts. Even rows are NOT shown on the chart for rows 2-23. All even rows are purled with the exception of the border garter stitches and rows 26 and 28. Row 29 is the decrease row. After this row, there will be 21 stitches in each section. There is no need to move your markers, they will be automatically in place. {If you want to divide this chart into more sections (I did on mine), you can put small markers after stitches 9 and 18. This divides the chart into 3 parts horizontally and will help you keep up with the stitches.} Special Instructions: On Row 27, the eyelet row, make sure you knit one stitch after YO, K2tog 4times...this keeps the sections equal and neat. On Row 29: the grey box is there because you are decreasing with K2tog, but NOT putting in YOs, so you lose those stitches. Pink samples by Ronie..good example of chart in variegated yarn.

SPRING S DANCE by DRAGONFLYLACE 8 GINGKO LACE - BORDER Before beginning the border chart, make sure you have learned the Nupp Stitch. This information is posted in the workshop information. For this chart, please note that even numbered rows for catching the nupp formed in the previous row and marked in Red and the information in the written instructions is in bold, italic print. Other even rows are purled with the exception of the 4 garter stitches on each side of the stole. These even rows are not in the chart or in the written instructions. As always, end this chart with a purl row...row 24. HINT: if you want to knit the 2nd edging and border before starting the body chart, you can put the first edging and border on waste yarn or another set of needles. Then knit the 2nd edging/ border and continue with the body. This step will ensure you have enough yarn to finish the 2nd edging/border and you can knit as many repeats as you want for the body of the stole.

SPRING S DANCE by DRAGONFLYLACE 9 DRAGONFLY WINGS - BODY The body chart is an alternating design of gathered stitches surrounded by YOs and the nupp stitch also surrounded by YOs. The design was developed to follow the stitch count set up by the Gingko Lace border. Some may notice and ask why it was not done as a repeat of stitches 1-14 to keep the alternating pattern constant and to make a diamond. This is a possibility, and you may do this if you wish. However since this is an intermediate project I decided to let the chart follow directly the stitch count set up by the border. This means the pattern will more like a square followed by another square. If you look closely, you will see that the general pattern for Dragonfly Wings is the center of Gingko Lace, stitches 8-14 on rows 14-19. Be sure to end the body with a purl row before stopping and finishing the stole. White sample provided by Ronie, my helper in test knitting the patterns.

SPRING S DANCE by DRAGONFLYLACE 10 INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FINISHING AND GRAFTING You will be using the Kitchener stitch for grafting the top Edge+Border to the stole body. This information was also used in our Winter s Mirage. So if you already have the Kitchener Stitch information, this will be an exact repeat of the information. On the workshop section for Spring s Dance, I will provide a separate document for you to download and print and use. After grafting with the Kitchener stitch, weave in your ends and block with wires or pins. Blocking will be discussed and exact directions provided on the workshop section.
