Tiger Talk Written and Illustrated By Verbelin Gil June V.2 Issue 10 June-August Calendar Thanking our VTMS Teachers 8th graders, these are our final days of being in middle school. Most of us 8th graders have been here for 3 years. Thanks to our teachers we have experienced many things like laughter, studying hard, embarrassment, and many happy times. Without the teachings of our teachers we wouldn t be the great person we are today. Our math teachers taught us how to find the surface area of a cylinder or the slope of a line. Without our science teachers we wouldn t know what an atom is or how many circuits there are. Without our English teachers we won t know all the vocabulary we re using today or how to read a little paragraph. Many teachers are leaving Von Tobel and we won t be here next year. Make sure to tell your teacher, before you leave, that you re thankful for all they ve done. June 1 Last Day of School June 8 Best Friends Day June 19 Fathers Day July 1 International Joke Day July 4 Independence Day July 24 Parents Day August 7 Sisters Day August 18 Bad Poetry Day August 29 First Day of High School Going to High School High School Experience Most of us 8th graders are going to high school in a couple of months. There are many high schools that are close to here, which means that mostly everyone will be separated from their friends. It will be a new school, new friends, and new classes. Going to high school may be scary, but it can also be an opportunity for a new you. If you wanted to change the way you look or even your personality, the start of high school is the beginning. Be more open and talk to other classmates, wear a different hairstyle, and/or change your fashion style. You can still keep on being friends with your old friends, but also make new ones. I met with 9th Grader, Annette Haro and asked her what her first day of high school was like. Even when I had to wake up really early I wasn t tired at all. When I first entered high school, I was really scared. I got lost all around the school. I also then met with 9th grader, Victor Gil and asked him the same question. He said, The first day of high school wasn t that bad. I saw many friends from last year and everyone was in the same position as me.

Places to Visit Have you been wondering where you should go with your family or friends during summer? There are many places you could go to that are around Nevada. More than 37 million people visit the Las Vegas Strip every year. In all of the 25 hotels in Las Vegas, 15 are located in the strip. Another good place to visit is the National Automobile Museum in Reno. You don t have to like cars to enjoy this museum. If you like shopping, a good place to visit is the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas. This mall is spread over 5 blocks of Fremont Street. Summer We know that lots of people are excited that middle school is over, but once summer starts you don t know what to do and start missing school. Watching a movie can help stop your boredom. The BFG, The Secret Life of Pets, and Finding Dory are all good movies to watch during break. If you want to get out, call some friends and go to the mall. You can also go eat at a good restaurant. Bowling is also a good choice. If you just don t feel like sitting or eating then go bowling. Take some summer classes like dancing, swimming, or even cooking classes. Try to relax as much as you can before school starts because everything will be different once you enter the high schools door. Health Since its vacation time, most of us are glad that there s no more P.E. During summer, I know that everyone will go to new restaurants and eat all you want because there s no school. Actually you should take more care during summertime because there is no more P.E. You don t want to look like you ve gained more weight during summer, right? Instead of driving, how about walking or getting on your bike? It s the old fashioned way of burning calories. Often when we re thirsty, we tend to get food instead of water. That s not how it should be. Get yourself a water bottle so that you can feel refreshed. Always stay cool and hydrated. Protect yourself from overexposure to sunlight. Wear a hat or sunscreen. The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change -Carl Rogers Meet Me My name is Verbelin. My favorite color has always been pink. I like anything that is sparkly. I am nice and quiet most of the time. I ve been in Mrs. Tischer s publications class for two years now and it has helped me improve in many things such as my writing and reading skills. I m not a big fan of presenting or standing in front of the class. Every time I don t do something well, I decide to do it again and make it better. My favorite subject is lunch. I m an 8 th grader and am going to high school soon. Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom -George Washington Carver

And does your ice cream always melts and gets your hand all sticky? Well I can fix that with 2 easy life hacks. 1. Cold drink: All you got to do it get an empty water bottle and fill it up with water halfway. Next, put the water bottle in the freezer laying down, and take it out until it s ice/solid. Last but not least add whichever drink you desire in the other part that does not have anything inside and enjoy. 2. Un-messy popsicles: What you have to do is get and cupcake holder or a little plastic cup. Then, cut out a slit in the bottom in the middle of the cupcake holder or the plastic cup. Tiger Talk Layout & Articles By: Leslie Nahuat Welcome 5 th Grade Issue We Offer Open Doors Von Tobel is a school that welcomes everyone through the front doors. The school welcomes every student the same to ensure everyone feels safe and equal. If you ever feel like your struggling in a class don t be afraid to ask for help. In case you re not comfortable walking up to a teacher during class ask for a pass to go to her class before or after school to talk in private. Someday you might have an emotional problem that might get in the way of your education, so think about consulting your counselor for help. If you don t have time to have a complete talk before or after school simply stop by their office and let them know you need to talk. Sometimes you might be in a situation that is harder to handle. If you have a problem that might end in a physical conflict such as a fight make sure to tell the deans before the problem gets worse. Remember that the adults on campus are here to help you when you need it. Everything is possible if you work hard and keep your eyes on the prize. -Unknown What to do After School If you don t want to go straight home once the day is over you can join a club or get extra help. Von Tobel offer After School All Stars (ASAS). After School All Stars offers two different hours. The first hour is known as academic hour. This is the time to get tutoring or you could also get any homework done. This is not the time or place to mess around and go crazy. Take advantage of this time to focus on work and get help if something doesn t make scene. After academic hour come enrichment hour. This is the time to have fun with activities such as sports, dance, etc. Keep in mind that in order to participate in second hour you must attend first hour. After School All Stars does have field trips, but in order to go you mush have good behavior and attend almost everyday. After School All Stars takes place Mondays- Thursday. First hour is 2:16-3:15 and second hour is from 3:30-4:30. There is a snack provided in between first and second hour to keep your energy up. Work hard, play hard, and laugh hard.

By: Leslie Nahuat 5 th grade Issue It s Here for a Reason Like every other school Von Tobel has expectations for all students, no matter what grade. Von Tobel has rules to help keep students safe. It is important to report a problem before it gets worst. If you know someone is getting bullied but don t want anyone to know you reported it you can make a unanimous report. This report will be filled out in the dean s office. If there is ever a problem make sure it isn t just a silly argument because the dean doesn t have time to deal with silly problems. Keep in mind that every action has a consequence. Think about the outcome of you actions before doing something. Follow the rules and stay out of trouble. Don t forget that any problem you get into stays on your permanent, and any school can see any problem you ve had in the past. Keep your record as clean as possible to get into a good high school, collage, and university. Think about your future because it s coming quicker that you might think. Want a Bite By the time you get to lunch you might be hungry and maybe a little tired from going to class the class. Once you get to the lunchroom take a seat because you will soon realize how crowded that place can get. Tables will be call for you to get your lunch. After all tables are called they will announce that every table has been called. If you weren t paying attention when your table was called you will still get a chance to get lunch after the other tables are called. You must wait until after your table is called to go to the student store. During lunch you can talk with your friends, but make sure you re not screaming across the lunchroom. Be sure to at least eat something during lunch, that way you won t be hungry the rest of the day. Don t forget to thank the students who help clean up the lunchroom because it is not their job to clean up after you. Help keep the lunchroom clean by throwing away your trash in the trashcan and not on the floor. In the Halls The first day might be a challenge, but don t let that get in the way of your getting to your next class. The hallways can get really crowded with all the students trying to get to their next class. Make sure not to shove people into walls and don t just push people out of your way. After a couple of days you will get to know which hallways are less crowded, what the quickest way to your next class, and how to get to class in time without pushing people or being pushed. Be careful where you turn because the school s hallways might be trickier that you might think. There are so many circular halls and some halls have different paths that lead to different places. Keep in mind that you should always act with adequate no matter where you are, including the hallways. If you don t know where you want to go, it doesn t matter which path you take. Alice in Wonderland Meet Me My name is Leslie and I am 12 years old. I find myself to be confident in my work. Even though I might feel confident about my work I try to see what I can do to make it better. In the mornings I work in the front, helping to make sure students have their Id s and that they are in dress code. I try my best in all classes. Every year my goal is to have strait A s all year. I try to help people out when they have a problem. Sometimes I might not be able to help a person with a problem, but I try to help the as much as I can. I am a caring person who is not afraid to stand up for what is right, and I never give up on what I believe is worth fighting for. 2
