PART-TIME SHORT COURSES LISOF s part-time short courses are a viable alternative to full-time study and could be the beginning of your journey into the fascinating worlds of fashion and beauty. There are short courses in Fashion Photography, Garment Construction, Pattern Design, Fashion Design, Make-up and Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop. They are presented at our campus in Johannesburg over a period of 20 Saturday mornings. 1

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY SHORT COURSE After successful completion of the Fashion Photography short course you ll have been introduced to the language and principles of fashion photography, as well as some practical application of this knowledge. The course will give you the grounding to continue developing your knowledge and skills on your own, perhaps leading to an exciting new career. LISOF and its programmes are accredited by the Council on Higher Education and registered on the South African Qualifications Authority s National Qualifications Framework (NQF). 2

The part-time Fashion Photography short course curriculum includes the following: CUR Unit 1: This learning unit introduces the fundamentals of digital photography i.e. camera controls and operation and presents an overview of the course programme. Students will study the history of photography from its inception in 1839 as well as the history of fashion photography with a look at the work of the masters of fashion photography. Unit 2: Focuses on shutter speed and movement. Students will be shown the work of fashion photographers to illustrate this concept and will practice techniques to freeze motion or create blur. Unit 3: Focuses on aperture and the concept of depth of field. Once again students will be exposed to the work of contemporary fashion photographers to illustrate this concept. This unit includes a practical project where students are able to experiment with focal length and aperture paying attention to light and composition. It also includes an introduction to image manipulation and layout in Adobe Photoshop. Unit 4: Presents visual literacy through observation and analysis of the work of celebrated contemporary and historical photographers. This unit will also introduce the various categories of photography practised by a fashion photographer. Unit 5: Presents the themes of working with natural light, setting the correct exposure and working creatively with sunlight. Students will be exposed to the work of contemporary fashion photographers working in natural light as well as street-style photographers shooting street-style fashion. There is ongoing practical application and experimentation building on what is taught in the class sessions. Unit 6: Explores digital correction and enhancement using Adobe Photoshop and the development of a signature style using post-processing techniques. Unit 7: Focuses on using indoor ambient lighting and the daylight studio, with practical application and experimentation. Unit 8: Introduces the technical aspects and creative use of on-camera flash. Fashion photographers using this style of photography will be researched and these techniques will be practiced in class. Unit 9: Introduces studio photography and explores the use of strobe lighting for portraiture and studio fashion photography. Students will expand their visual literacy through researching portrait and fashion photographers working in the studio environment and will experiment with various studio lighting techniques. Retouching techniques for fashion and portraiture will be further explored. Unit 10: Focuses on the use of strobe lighting on location and outdoors. Learning will be reinforced through researching fashion photographers who use this technique and students own practice of the techniques. Unit 11: The course is brought to completion with a practical unit in which the students collate all they have learnt in the production of a fashion editorial from concept to presentation. Students will be introduced to narrative in fashion editorials, the planning of the shoot, the selection of locations and working within a team to produce the desired look and feel.
