The manuscript note Coffin s 14 May 77 added at upper left by Coleman indicates that the sender was Lieutenant Coffin, in command of the detachment of Royal Marines which was shortly after replaced by a police force, Coffin leaving the islands on July 2nd. Colonel Lewis was staying at Government House, having arrived in the islands on Dec. 10, 1896 to report on whether Port Stanley or Port Edgar might serve as a naval coaling station. Ex Barton.
