The forests, fields and mighty St. Lawrence River made the wonders of nature come alive for him. A self-taught, professional freelance artist who works in both illustration and fine art, De Wolfe produced his first one-man show at 18. It sold out, and he went on to spend 25 years as an illustrator for corporations such as General Motors, Pepsi-Cola, Sears, Labatt and Sony. Art connects us, acknowledges De Wolfe, adding, The important thing is to help people see what I see and feel what I feel about a subject. What you paint is far less important than how you paint it. Sailing the Reach was commissioned as a retirement gift for a friend s husband. It is their sailboat, loaded with their children and grandchildren, explains De Wolfe. They have spent every summer on this boat since the children were young. The boat is still considered an important member of the family, even as they enjoy retirement. I am fascinated by ordinary, everyday people their expressions, beliefs, quirky habits and relationships with their pets and each other, she advises. On Korpita s light-filled, seashore canvases, where bold colors and simple shapes create a playful, upbeat vibe, the beachgoers are clearly enjoying life. The human figure is my favorite subject and in my paintings, no one is self-conscious about their body they have made peace with it and are just carrying on with life, she says. They have much more important things with which to concern themselves. Korpita, who holds degrees in fine art and graphic design, also enjoys creating pet portraits, often taken from photographs. coverartist Quality Time Tom Sierak Painting tomorrow's memories today, is how Tom Sierak likes to describe his pastel paintings. He says, People often talk about the good old days and how nice it would be to return to them. Places and things may change around us, but the bond that exists between children, parents, grandparents (and even pets) never does. A native of Newburyport, Massachusetts, Sierak attended the Vesper George School of Art, in Boston, Massachusetts. During his art school training, he perfected his drawing skills and absorbed the knowledge and experience of many of the accomplished art instructors with whom he studied. Sierak says, A little part of me goes into each painting, but the people I portray are the real story. I like to think of my pastels as a pen that puts the words on paper. I choose to convey positive messages, whether through my lighthearted portrayals of children or romantic scenes of young women and landscapes. His paintings can be found in numerous private collections. He often represents family, friends and faith in the form of man s best friend. It s an approach that s carried his paintings of dogs and horses around the world on the power of word-of-mouth. About the inspiration for Making Memories, he says, One of my real thrills is to take my dad fishing. When I painted this, I had got him an old-fashioned fishing cane pole. We hadn t been fishing in years, and the sight of him fishing on the dock was an inspiration. A self-taught artist with Midwest roots in draftsmanship, landscaping and high school art classes, Weiss disciplined approach to art culls methods and techniques from artists he admires. Andrew Wyeth was one early source of inspiration. Experience, he says, is the best teacher.
