Using only the best planks from old-growth trees and handcrafting them to create unique, lasting works of art, he built our future on a solid New England tradition. Both are made to the same exacting standards so they look and perform the same. In fact, if we didn t tell you, you d never know the difference. Premium Engineered Structure Solid Structure 1 2 1 1 Wear Layer: A 3/16" wear layer compared to an industry standard of 1/12" to 1/8" offering the same thickness of sanding available as a solid floor without sacrificing the stability in an engineered platform. 1 Solid Flooring: Solid hardwood flooring is milled from a single solid piece of hardwood featuring a 3/16" wear layer. 2 Stabilicore: Stability and floor longevity are enhanced by 11 layers of Baltic Birch backing. It s All About Character Original Grade Sawn from the base and mid-portion of the tree, this grade most resembles the floors of our ancestors. This floor will have more knots, mineral streaking and color variation then our other grades. Signature Grade A perfect blend of our original and heirloom grades providing character and clarity. This grade truly let s the tree tell it s story. Heirloom Grade The most revered floor we craft, sawn from the portion of the tree with few or no branches. textures Brushed A unique treatment developed by Carlisle, this is our most subtle surface texture. Using specially designed brushes, craftsmen de-gloss and unsmooth our boards in order to give them a soft and gently worn texture with very fine brush markings. This technique can be combined easily with any of our other surface treatments for dramatic results. Available on White Oak, Rift & Quartersawn White Oak, Hickory, Walnut, Eastern White Pine, Heart Pine, Ash and Cherry. Footworn As floors are walked on, the softer grains are worn away more quickly than the denser grains, creating distinctive undulating patterns. Also, if boards are uneven in height, the taller boards will show more foot wear. Using custom tools, our craftsmen recreate these subtle patterns typical of Colonial floors that have been trod upon for centuries. Available on White Oak, Rift & Quartersawn White Oak, Hickory, Walnut, Heart Pine, Ash, Birch, Cherry and Maple. Timeworn As time passes and floors become naturally worn by the people who walk on them, the natural wood grain creates distinguishing patterns. Using a proprietary process, our craftsmen recreate these natural patterns typical of New England floors that have been lived on for more than three lifetimes. Watermill This process replicates the look of floors whose boards were originally rough sawn at riverside watermills centuries ago. Never planed or scraped smooth, saw marks remained in the boards. Over the years the marks transformed into undulations in the boards, as they were smoothed by foot traffic. We leave the original saw marks on the timber, then individually brush the planks to soften the texture, creating an authentic reproduction of the old watermill boards. Available on White Oak, Rift & Quartersawn White Oak, Hickory, Walnut, Eastern White Pine, and Ash. Hit or Miss Until modern milling techniques were applied, boards from early sawmills contained saw swirl markings or kerfs. Our Custom Shop authentically recreates this look, varying the saw swirl patterns from subtle to prominent. Available on Eastern White Pine. Hand Scraped Edges Our craftsmen gently scrape the edges of each board by hand to recreate the centuries-old process of smoothing the transition from board to board. THE CARLISLE DIFFERENCE strictly center cut... we only use the heart of the tree Whether it s a rare gem or the perfect steak, the cut determines the value. For a diamond, it s the facets and clarity that make it sparkle in the eye of the beholder. For a steak, it s the prime, center cut that practically melts in your mouth as a culinary perfection. And when it comes to wide plank wood flooring, the heart at the center of select old-growth trees is the ultimate source of flooring perfection. The key, of course, is that Carlisle does not use just any wood. Because of our exacting requirements, we cut a premium log four times to cut away what we won t use in order to get to the prime wood. Here, this premium wood has the maximum vertical grain density for superior strength and long-term stability.
