Blatchford Solutions Podcast #30 Top Women in Dentistry: Interview with Dr. Davis Only If I Knew Than What I Know Now

Transcription:

Putting the Finishing Touches on Your November Application Would it be possible to do an off campus applicant initiated interview? May I reach out to have an applicant initiated interview using skype if I am an international candidate? In the information provided, there are instructions to send GMAT scores to Tuck using the code Z04-NH-64. Do we need this if we send electronically? Is there a way to confirm that Tuck has received our official scores from the testing provider? Do we enter details of part time work / internships in the Employment Information section or do we just keep them on the resume? I found many companies don't hire internationals for roles such as rotational leadership. Are there any in operations or energy sector who recruit at Tuck? That would help in having a better clarity. Applicant-initiated interviews are on-campus only. No, we only offer applicant-initiated interviews on campus. Off-campus or Skype interviews are by invitation only. Re: test scores, assume that if you don't hear from us, then we have everything that we need! Use your best judgment. We are primarily interested in hearing about your full time post grad experience. If you have space and the internships are relevant, you may include them in the employment section. I think the student experiences at the Revers Center would be helpful! http://www.tuck.dartmouth.edu/revers/studentexperience/careers What tips could you recomend me in order to improve my quant skills for the application process? How receptive is Tuck towards re-applicants? Hard to answer without knowing your background. Taking classes if you don't have prior exposure is helpful - financial accounting, microeconomics, statistics, finance, excel are all good ones to consider. We like to see reapplicants and appreciate it when an applicant is committed enough to try again. Successful reapplicants are those who have taken steps to strengthen their candidacy since the last application. We have a couple of good blog posts talking about things to consider as a reapplicant. 1

My question is in regard to the first essay. There is a word limit of 500 words but you say you won't stop reading after the 500th word. If I haven't talked about a center at Tuck for example that is one of the reasons Tuck has a strong appeal to me and this would add let's say 50 words, would you advise to put it in or rather talk about it in the interview? I have the feeling this is a very thin line between not expressing why Tuck is the right fit on the one hand and a lack of judgement of the right length on the other hand. I assume there is no right or wrong to this question but I though I would ask it anyways. Is there a way to confirm that Tuck has received our official GMAT scores? Are the recommendation letters required to be on the company's letter pad? You should use your best judgment. 50 words extra is probably fine. Assume that if you don't hear from us, then we have everything that we need! No. Your recommender will be sent a link to the online form that he/she should complete. I was not able to find a date that worked with my schedule for an applicant-initiated interview prior to the upcoming deadline for round 1. If I select a date in the month of November, will that be taken into consideration for my round 1 application? Or should I wait to see if Tuck decides to initiate an interview with me? You should not schedule an interview if it is after the deadline for your round. Please wait to see if you are invited to interview. How can I be sure that my international GPA will be correctly interpreted by the admissions commitee? The admissions committee has an incredible amount of experience evaluating applications, including international GPAs. There's a huge depth of knowledge around different countries and institutions. If you really feel the need to explain, please do so briefly in the optional essay. Leadership doesn't have to come from a What kind of leadership roles do you look for in supervisory role. It can be project leadership, coming students that students must demonstrate mentorship, initiative, or simply leading quietly in in their application? Should it be something done an unofficial capacity. Leadership in an in a supervisory capacity? extracurricular activity is valuable as well. How strictly do we need to adhere to the suggested word limits on the application essays? It is a guideline. If you go over a little, we will not penalize you, but if you find you are significantly over 500 words, you should ask if you are saying what you want to as succintly as possible. 2

How much weight is put into first vs. 2nd round... If I think I can do a bit better on the GMAT, should I wait? Will Tuck release November round decisions all at once or on a rolling basis? You should wait to apply until you have the strongest application possible. A stronger application will serve you better than an earlier one. With each round we release all decisions on the posted date. I am planning to apply to Tuck through the Consortium application, can advise if Consortium applications are reviewed under the same circumstances as those who apply directly to Tuck? (i.e. is there a separate committee that reviews Consortium applications) We review Consortium applications exactly the same way we review those applications that are directly to Tuck. My question is in regards to the Global Exposure section on the application - If I have had extensive international travel experience in a previous professional role, would that count towards having worked in a country outside my country of citizenship, or no? When can one apply for the one year MBA program? What is the fees? What is the weightage of various parts of application like GMAT score, experience, essays, interview etc? What is the maximum scholarship possible? On average, how many committee-initiated interviews does Tuck typically extend in a given round (vs. applicant-initiated)? Totally up to you--you can call it travel, or work...whatever feels right to you. The open question field after the check boxes will allow you to add context. We won't think you're being dishonest for making a judgement call! We do not offer a one year MBA. The number of applicant-initiated interviews greatly exceeds those done via invitation. We don't set a quota for invitations so it's hard to say-- we'll invite as many people as the pool requires! My undergrad institute has not given me a class rank.what should I fill in the rank section as I can only put an approximate rank which might be different than the acctual rank I might have received? If you don't have a rank provided by the school then leave it blank. I know that Tuck has been welcoming to reapplicants in the past. But this year there is a new Director of Admissions, Mr. Pena. Does he have a policy/view change? Or generally, not only in a re-applicants point of view, do you expect major changes in admissions process? We still look favorably upon reapplicants who have taken efforts to improve their candidacy. No foreseeable changes to the admissions process this year. 3

After my GRE exam, I had selected "Dartmouth College" as the institute to send my score. I had not selected Tuck specifically. Do I need to do anything regarding the score or just "Dartmouth College" is enough? I aspire to opt for a career in marketing in the food industry in the short term. Tuck presents a strong general management program. It appears to be specialized in Private Equity and Energy. It would be very helpful if you could throw some light on experiences at Tuck with a focus on marketing. The Tuck code number (4887) is needed otherwise the report will not come to us. We will also accept screenshots or scanned copies of score reports for submission - so you can email that to tuck.admissions@tuck.dartmouth.edu. Tuck's MBA is in general management - Tuckies graduate with an MBA (no specialization on that degree). That being said, Tuckies can tailor their curricular and extracurricular activities to their interests. We have many different centers/initiatives that facilitate this. Check them out here; http://www.tuck.dartmouth.edu/faculty/researchcenters For international students, is it a demerit for not having worked / travelled extensively outside home country? Should I put study abroad programs on my resume or would you advise to only put degrees in the education section? A global mindset is just one characteristics we look for, and one that can be viewed from different lenses. Experiences outside ones home country are positive, but aren't necessary for admission. You can certainly shine in other areas. Up to you! I'd keep the resume to one page, but the content is totally up to you. Because of my work and travel schedule, I wasn't able to schedule an Interview & Campus Visit until the week following the November submission date. Will my application and interview still be reviewed together? The November Round applicant-initiated interview deadline is November 10. If you're unable to schedule something prior to that deadline, you'll have to wait for the possibility that the admissions committee will invite you. An alternative option is to come for the interview and apply in the January Round. Will the application be taken up for review if submitted before the deadline? For instance, If I submit my application in December, will it be taken up for review only after the January deadline? Regarding the global experience question. I will be going to a foreign country for a project in a few days. Should I mention this in the globle experience section? We will not review your application early, and we release all decisions for each round at the same time. Yes. 4

Could you please talk a bit about what the applicant-initiated interview is like? Is there anything that we should consider preparing ahead of the interview, knowing that the interviewer has not yet received our application? For all interviews (applicant initiated or by invitation) the interviewer will only have your resume. They wil not see your application. The interview is a conversation where we can learn more about you and vice-versa. You should be prepared to answer questions about your career goals and past experiences. As an applicant without a strong quantitative foundation, I am working on completing MBAmath.com, as well as planning on enrolling in a calculus class before next fall. I am aware that this varies by school, but does Tuck take completion of the MBAmath.com into consideration? Regarding the optional essay, is there a thumb rule that I as an applicant can apply on whether to use it or not? Yes. MBAmath is very helpful and we actually require incoming students to do the program over the summer. If there is information that you think we need to know that is not clear from the rest of the application, you should include it in the optional essay. Typically it is for things like unusual choice of recommender, job gaps, poor grades. If there is an aspect of your candidacy that just doesn't come through elsewhere you can use it for that too. It truly is optional and should not be used if you don't need it. My question pertains to the four categories of An internship would likely be considered work international experince. Would you consider experience rather than studying. We do not have staying in a foreign country for 2-3 months for strict definitions of any of these categories. Use work as living abroad? Also does an internship in your best judgment as to how you classify your another country count as having studied there? experience. I really want my essays to talk about personal experiences I've had. What kind of stories are seen as too personal or not appropriate for the essays? Each applicant will upload resume in the system, but we need to provide job description in employment section as well. Can I write "please refer to resume uploaded for details"? Is Tuck looking for different info? Can I use the optional essay section to eloborate my role in the family business? That's a judgement call for the applicant. Is it truly answering the question? Is it demonstrating the traits you want us to be familiar with? Has it, or will it impact your professional experience? Or your contributions on campus? There are questions in the employment section that are typically not included in a resume. I encourage you to answer them all completely. Absolutely! Add whatever context is necessary, but please be as concise as possible--we should have already seen some of this in work experience/resume. 5

What percent on average of the applicants who couldn't schedule an applicant-initiated interview get invited by the committee to interview? Since scheduling an in person interview, some time has passed and my resume has changed some. Is there an opportunity to re submit an updated resume before the interview? What can I do to completely understand the MBA program at Tuck? Would you recommend networking, visiting the campus? I am an international applicant. I will not be able to visit the Tuck Campus in person. Is there any way I can take part in the applicant-initiated interview? Do I need to submit both my official transcript and official gmat score report by application deadline? If we re-take GMAT after submitting application and score higher, can we submit the revised score? Will it be considered? Does my current salary impact my chances of being admitted? Is there anything specifically expected (or goodto-have) as part of the application from an applicant with a family business background? Does not doing an applicant initiated interview affect one's chances to any extent? We do not have a set percentage to invite. We will invite any applicants who we want to learn more about. You should be able to upload a revised resume up to a week prior to the interview. If not, you can bring the revised version with you. You can learn more about the program by reading the website and student/alum profiles, the 360 blog, visiting campus, attending admissions events, watching various webinars we offer, etc. We only offer applicant initiated interviews on campus. We recognize not all candidates are able to make the trip, so in that situation, we will review your application and invite you to interview if we need additional information. We need the official GMAT score report at application, but do not need the official transcript until you're enrolling. You may submit a new score, but we cannot guarantee that it will be included in your file when we read it. We ask about salary because it helps us understand your progression within your company or moves to other companies. The amount per se will not impact your admissibility. There isn't anything additional we need to see. You may need to help us understand the company if it is one we are not familiar with. I would also encourage you to provide letters of recommendation that are not from family members. Initiating your own interivew is the only way to guarentee yourself the chance to do so--so in a way, yes. That said, if you are invited, we view an applicant-initiated interview in the same way we would an invitational interview. Same goes for oncampus vs. virtual. 6

My boss mentioned there may be a spot opening on the team above me in January, which means I may be receiving a promotion. If that happens, can I send an update to the adcom explaining the situation, and would that information be taken into account? Yes, please let us know! We'll add it to your application and will take it into consideration during any furture evaluation of your candidacy. Does the optional essay have to be in essay form or can it be bullet points? Bullets are completely okay for the optional essay! So far I gather that students have to demonstrate in their application that how their experiences and training has contributed to make them become a better professional? In this regard do you rank the employer firms while evaluating a student's profile? I understand that admissions want to see a career path that makes sense and is achievable. If my intermediate goal is not the typical route to achieve my long term goal, will that affect my admissibility negatively? We do not rank firms. It won't affect it negatively if you explain why that is the path you plan to take. It is all about how you tell your story. How would you describe the school s social scene? Varied! Tuckies have diverse interests and preferences. While everyone finds ways to be social, it doesn't all look the same. Some people prefer small groups over large ones, some people enjoy being outdoors more than others, etc. For the LOR, I have a manager who coordinates from ourhead office but mine is a Field Job and I work at client sites across various locations around the country.so my interaction with my manager is limited to telephonic or written communication mostly. So should I get the LOR from my seniors who have worked closely with me on field and seen my work? The strongest LORs are ones that come from people who know you and your work the best. If the people working with you in the field are in the best position to comment on your abilities, then you should use them. If they are not your manager, then explain the relationship and reason why you selected them in the optional essay. How family friendly are the housing facilities? My company had sent me for training to their training center in a foreign country for a period of two months.would this qualify as staying in foreing country for work? Sachem village is our housing for students with partners and families. It is very family friendly. Lots of the students living there have kids. Yes. 7

How important is a brand name for Tuck? I actually got a substantially bigger opportunity in a smaller company, which further handled projects for an oil major. I really grew a lot, which I wouldn't have achieved so fast otherwise. We are much more interested in the experience you had than the name of the company. Are there any courses at Tuck which we could take to get STEM accredition? For visa purposes? I don't know the details of the STEM accreditation requirements, but I'm fairly certain the MBA itself will not qualify. 8
